Better question is would Bill Parcells have accomplished anything in his career without BB as his defensive coordinator?

Scoring 39 points in 86 season was pretty much a lock to win that SB.

Still, Parcells does not have a playoff victory without Belichick on his staff and his overall winning percentage without him is less than .500. Parcells could motivate guys but he was never a great gameday coach.

Edit: Your also forgetting the ridiculous performance the Giants defense put up in the first two playoff games that year. Held Joe Monatan and the 49ers to 3 points and shut out the Redskins.

That's a good what if. I think had they not been leaving town (that season was a train wreck) he just might have succeeded. They were definitely tracking in the right direction. I doubt anyone could have been successful that last year in Cleveland.

you could probably play that game with most coaches though, be it a great player or assistant coach/staff. parcells assembled a great staff, kept it together(for the most part) through 3 organizations. that staff produced some pretty damn good coaches (not necessarily head coaches) too (weis, coughlin, romeo, belicheck). dallas and miami probably tarnished him a bit, but he did pretty damn good work with the giants, pats and jets.

And let's remember the Pats failed to make the playoffs in 02 after winning the SB the year before so it probably would have been the end of the line after that. There probably would not have been a 4th year. I do believe Brady would have eventually replaced Bledsoe but at what point? And let's also not forget Bledsoe played good enough for them to win that AFC title game in Pittsburgh so it's not like he didn't have it in him to win a few games that season.

Well there was no quarterback controversy because Bledsoe had done a lot for the franchise and we all wanted to believe he'd bring us a championship some day. Lots of excuse were made for him. I really think Brady was gonna get his shot in 2001. You're right though about Belichick was on shaky ground and the record was a reflection on him with fans more than with Bledsoe.

Belichick would have done very well here and would have had earlier success because he would not have needed to rebuild the team. Our 2000 team would not have collapsed with Bill Belichick here.

Your points are stupid. Do you think Parcells just blindly trusted BB to do whatever he wanted with no input. Giants & Jets were not in good shape when he took over. For the Giants, he had Young as GM helping out though. Cowboys improved under Parcells. Pats improved under Parcells. Dolphins improved under Parcells (and tanked once the ownership changed).

Parcells has turned franchises around numerous times. BB left Parcells once to coach the Browns & failed. Then he left Parcells a second time & his job was on shaky ground until Brady came along.

BB is doing very well w/ Brady but let's not pretend BB has a long history of success by himself. BB didn't do crap when he went to the Browns. His job didn't look to stable in NE before Brady also.

BB does deserve a lot of credit for the Pats but he wasn't always a winner. He got there with the right talent & overcoming previous football failures. Stating he is the reason Parcells has rings is crazy. BB has no rings without Brady.

Let's see BB take his genius to a losing franchise & turn them into a SB contender. I've got serious doubts he'd pull it off.

    ===
overall records is not a good for comparison because Parcells doesn't walk into winning franchises & try to lead them to a SB. There's usually been a rebuilding process involved.

You wouldn't be engaging in a "what if" debate, would you?

BB has never won a SB w/o BP's old staff.

Parcells was a great coach, I think a better HC than Belichick. he won TWO SBs w/ QBs not headed to the HOF(and made a SB w/ Drew Bledsoe- BB was 5-13 w/ Bledsoe) and he turned around many franchises. It was his fault he left before finishing the job but if he hung around another year or 2 in NE or NY he'd have another SB by now.

We can't assume they miss in '02 if they didn't win the SB in '01. There wouldn't have been a SB hangover or a bullseye on their backs.

He would have won big w/ an old Vinny coming off the achilles injury? and assuming we got Chad he would have won big w/ Chad getting hurt every other year? he would have struggled here unless somehow he got Brady here.

    or

what if we had drafted Emmit Smith?

what if we had drafted Warren Sapp?

What if Mike Tannenbaum hadn't become our GM?

what if we wouldn't have wasted 4 years on Herm Edwards?

Parcells was the motivator and the one who gave direction and made the final call. Picked LT and Mark Bavaro for a few. There's a bunch of parcell clips from the early days to let you know who ran the ship. Parcells barking away and when parcells was around (when coaching Pats) I saw many practices and Parcells was definitely the boss.

Vinny led the Jets to 19 wins in the 2 seasons following his achilles injury. So yes, BB (a coach Worlds ahead of Groh and Edwards) would have won w/ Vinny as the QB. He absolutely would not have struggled here. And in fact likely would have succeeded right that away.

I make this comment to people all the time that talk about Beli being a genius for drafting Brady. If there was the tiniest inkling of what Brady would become the Pat's wouldn't have waited until round 6 to draft him. Nobody, not even the all-knowing Belichek drafts their HOF QB in round six. They took a chance on a kid that projected to be no more than a career backup, and they struck gold. Luck, pure and simple.

I use the Jerry Rice analogy. The niners took a risk trading up and drafting a kid from Mississippi Valley State University that was deemed 'slow' in the 40 and he became the best WR in NFL history. The Pat's did none of that to acquire Brady. I give them credit - they took the chance, however slight it was, and drafted him...

He would have led us to the playoffs once or twice but we weren't winning SBs. Our O would have been better and more balanced in 2000 w/ BB though b/c I doubt he trades Key but then he doesn't get Abe & Ellis.
