We're broadening the context of this discussion. . . but as long as we are. . . Seems to me, issues like this one are the easy ones, and you dispense with them in a few hours. Expand or create a new class of franchise/transition designation so you can protect certain 2010 RFAs. Create special draft pick compensation for RFAs converting into UFAs. Or, think up some fancy new twist for RFA compensation in a new CBA. Find some way to recapture value. When you consider the big CBA issues - revenue sharing, expanded schedule - this one concerns smaller dollars and a limited number of collected interests.
My thoughts exactly. Even a 3rd round pick is too important to lose along with the player so I can't see us letting him walk.
We are talking about a team that used a 2nd round pick on Mike Nugent and Kellen Clemens. With Bradway still involved in drafting this pick might not be as valuable as you think.
It only becomes a big issue if the owners push for RFA to be 4 or 5 years. Since we haven't seen a word of this issue I would have to assume that they will go back 3 years for RFA and 4 years for UFA. Then the big issue which you hit on is the 2011 free agency. You've got 3 draft classes caught in the middle of this. The 2005 draft (Mankins, Braylon), 2006 draft (Santonio, Cromatie), 2007 draft (Harris, Timmons, Woodley) would all be UFA prior to 2010. I don't know if the players association will agree to additional franchise tags/transitional tags for one year. It's the right idea, but you know they are going to want to get those guys paid. Maybe they put something in the CBA that for one year you franchise 2 additional players but they cannot be franchised again?
Cimini also reminds me of Randy Quaid in Major League 2: "They'll blow it in the playoffs......... they will!"
My point was, there are all sorts of mechanisms for reconciling immediate value that will otherwise be lost if the rules change. Everything else is gravy. The present class of RFAs and perhaps the next class - those are the only real sticking points. That's a small-ish class to consider in the context of collective bargaining. The real point of all this is how you value the Cromartie trade. I can understand someone saying that a one-year rental - potentially - is poor value; I can't understand dissecting certain terms. You either want Cromartie at the price we paid, or you don't want Cromartie. He was being shopped. I'd rather win on Saturday AND keep a second round pick AND keep Cromartie under an extended term. If Cementhead is correct, two of those three are mutually exclusive. It is what it is. This team decided that 2010-11 was going to the year it paid everything it thought was necessary to achieve a championship. It's only stupid if they fail.
I agree. A 2nd round pick for Cromatie and either we win a superbowl in 2011 or he is on the Jets roster for 3 or 4 more seasons and I won't complain. If we have him for one season in which we make the divisional round and he leaves it's very poor value. Getting a comp pick in 2012 is possible but not likely knowing the Jets history in free agency.
You can pick up great talent for the front 7 in the bottom of the 1st round. Just off the top of my head, LaMarr Woodley was a 2nd round pick in 07, and he's an amazing pass rushing OLB. The Steelers have recently continually ended up with draft picks in the lower portion of each round and that hasn't stopped them from being able to draft young talented front 7 players like Woodley, Lawrence Timmons, Ziggy Hood, and Jason Worilds. Not gonna lie, not having a 2nd round pick is going to stink.
Trade Cromartie for Lamar Woodley? Pittsburgh drafted Jason Worilds and they could use an upgrade at CB
It's not the end of the world. This team hasn't built through the draft since 2006, and I don't see them starting anytime soon. After we lose in the playoffs, they're going to wish they had those draft picks back. Hopefully we can just reset and build the team normally after this draft. This type of behavior typically leads to a mass exodus, and huge rebuilding years down the road. Let's hope that's not the case, but history has proven that's what happens when you throw away multiple drafts for immediate success (that often doesn't come).
The current Steelers regime seems to put a much higher value on OLB's then cornerbacks. I can't see them trading Woodley for Cromatie even if they both were under contract. Since neither has a contract in 2011 that would make things challenging. Also, the Steelers drafted Worldis to replace Harrison at some point, not Woodley. I do like the idea but we value cornerbacks more then OLB's and the Steelers value OLB's more then CB's.
No one wants to talk about this because we have made the playoffs two years in a row. The quantity of picks that Tannenbaum has traded away in 6 drafts is incredible. 3rd round pick for Favre 4th round pick for Barlow 3rd and 5th for Braylon 3rd and 5th for Jenkins two 5's for Lito Sheppard 5 for Santonio 2 or 3 for Cromatie Trading up for Revis, Harris, Keller, Sanchez and Greene. The bill for this will come due at some point. Most of our draft picks in 5 drafts were on the offensive side. Tannenbaum has only drafted 9 defensive players in 5 drafts. The only draft pick in Tannenbaum's 5 drafts that has had any impact on the front 7 is David Harris. Think about how crazy that is.
4th-7th round picks are picks I don't mind trading because more often than not you're gonna draft a dud with those picks. If you can get somebody to help you for 1-2 years with those picks than it's not a big deal. 1-3 picks you better be getting somebody that's gonna stay with your team for 3+ years.
Agreed, 4th through 7th round picks can be anything from a long term starter to someone who doesn't make the opening day roster. I'm fine with trading a 5th for Santonio even if it's only for one season. I'm not okay with trading a 2nd or 3rd for a one year rental.
seems like we have our skills players all set. these are the guys tanny loves to trade up for or trade pics away for (revis, sanchez, keller, santonio, cromartie, edwards, bart/harris). i can see tanny trading up for a good pass rusher, but outside of that, i think it's time to keep our pics and stock pile for a few years.
The part you refuse to listen to, even though it has been stated many time, is that Cromartie is NOT a 1 year rental. We entered this season with the understanding that palyers with 5 years in the NFL will be restricted free agants. There is no possible way that changes at the end of the season. Nobody on this team with less than 6 years of service in the NL is going anywhere, unless we want them too. At the very least we have Cromartie for 2 years at just under 2.5 million. In all likelyhood he will sign a 3+ year deal to get a reasonable salary in 2011.
Cam wake was drafted in the 3rd round by the Dolphags this year, so yes, you can pick up a phenom pass rusher anywhere in the draft.
Are you kidding? There is no possible way? Are you living in a dream world? The NFL players association is never going to let what happened in 2010 happen again. No way will a player with more then 4 years service be a restricted free agent and leave millions in the owners pocket. I don't know where you get your information from. We can only hope that the Owners and Players association will come up with some sort of one year agreement that gives the Jets a chance to keep Braylon, Santonio, Harris, Cromatie and Brad Smith without giving each one of them a new large extension. No where has the NFL ever said that in 2011 teams will be able to make any player with less then 6 years service a restricted free agent. If you can show me a link that would be great. The history of free agency says that a player with 3 years or less is restricted and a player with 4 full years in the NFL is an unrestricted free agent. If you think the players association is going to ever let this happen again...
