So technically, they controlled their own destiny. The Jets currently own a playoff spot a week before the season ends. That's not backing in. I don't think "backed in" necessarily means "got in without deserving it". It just means we clinched a playoff spot despite losing a game on that day. I don't think the Jets are scaring anybody right now to be honest, nor should they until they kick ass on BOTH sides of the ball. On the same day.
