I have always been a huge fan of Tannenbaum, but this prior offseason was his worst one by far. I know, he stole Holmes and Cromartie, those were great acquisitions and made the offseason an average one. Still, we haven't had one player from the draft make an impact. McCourtey and Haden are looking awesome while Wilson is stinking it up. Ducasse doesn't play. McKnight is truly horrible and we got rid of Woodhead to keep him on the roster. Connor is the only one who has shown promise. Pretty bad draft, if you ask me. Also, getting rid of Feely, Thomas Jones, and Faneca was a mistake. I know TJ is struggling a little himself, but LT doesn't look good at all. Why mess with a good thing? TJ wasn't asking for that much more. We had the best OL and running game in football last year. We're actually paying Faneca not to play on this team. It's clear Slauson isn't as good as Faneca was in run blocking. Feely doesn't miss. Folk makes me nervous every time he's out there. Mike T got too cute this offseason.
Agree on Feely...he kicked better for them than any other kicker in recent memory Not sure on Faneca... better to cut him one year too early than one year too late Disagree on Jones... if OC had better game plans, we wouldn't notice he's gone.
The only questionable move was the Feely decision, Jones was replaceable and Faneca sucks. Folk hasn't cost us a game yet but goddamn he tried. He didn't miss yesterday despite the field conditions being awful so hopefully it's a sign that things are on the right track for him.
I find it hard to disagree at this point. Most of his moves looked much better earlier in the season, especially when LT was tearing it up. This year's draft flat out sucked. Several of the picks were questionable then. They are ALL questionable now. I liked the Wilson pick at the time but right now he just does not look anywhere close to being a starting NFL CB.
Not everything is a short term move. Faneca leaving is inevitable this year or last and Slauson is a long term replacement. Ducasse is a replacement for Woody and is a project which we all knew. Wilson isnt playing as well as we hoped but the jury is still out on a physically talented rookie. Jones needed to go he was a product of his O Line. Cromartie and Santonio were great acquisitions for this team as was LT. McKnight sucks and I dont think he will pan out personally but I trust everything Tanny does.
This year's draft was one of those where none of the players made any kind of impact as rookies. Conner hasn't had much of an impact even though he's probably gotten the most play time. You hope that these guys can make an impact as their careers progress. We all know that Conner will be the replacement for Richardson. The other guys are a matter of if they develop like they're slated to. Now next year we don't have a 2nd or 3rd (what are the criteria for Cro's trade anyway?). In the offseason, Tanny needs to try to pick up some picks. I hate this FA path that the team has been taking recently. Our best players are all home grown, that should be a lesson to Tanny.
This is a terrible post. Tanny has hit much more than hes missed this year. He's hit huge on Holmes and Cromartie. I think Taylor has played much better than people give him credit for. I think LT has played better than Thomas Jones at this point. Its hard to tell the last few weeks if LT is slowing down because of age, or the o-line is getting no push. The latter seems to be the better option in my opinion, because Shonn Greene hasn't been nearly as effective of late. You can't discount LT's emergence as a checkdown receiver, something TJ never did when he was here. I also disagree with you on Slauson. After the first couple of weeks, he's been well above average on the line. Have you heard how Fancea's doing in 'zona? He's been terrible. So not only has Slauson outperformed him, he's also doing it at a fraction of the price. Now he definitely missed on Feely. No question about that. I also think he missed on Brodney Pool too. Other than yesterday's sack and fumble recovery and getting Brady's INT week 2, what exactly has he done? Never thought I'd wish for Kerry Rhodes back, but he's having a tremendous season playing for an Arizona defense which isn't very good.
Since training camp he's had his position flip flopped a lot. Going into TC he was a nickle. Then Revis held out and he became a starting corner. But then Revis came back and he became a nickle, a position he got no work in in training camp. So he's getting his feet wet at nickle for a game and a half...then Revis hurt his hamstring and Wilson is starting again. I look forward to him getting a fresh start next year in a defined role that'll stay static throughout the year.
Right now the draft certainly looks awful. I have not given up on Ducasse or Wilson for the medium term, but neither has done crap this year, and what we have seen of Wilson is not good. Ducasse can't get past Slauson, who's the weakest starter on the team. As for issues other than the draft, imo you did not go far enough. While Rhodes probably had to go, Tanny got no one good to replace him. I also understand the point about Faneca not being worth keeping, but again Slauson is not a good replacement. Meanwhile such camp fodder as Coleman, who concededly played decent early in the season, is still on the roster. They effectively give up a roster spot to a guy who's supposedly the #2 Qb, but who really seems to be nothing but an assistant Qb coach. And speaking of the draft before this year, let me just say Gholston. Says it all. Then there was the whole debacle involved in the Revis contract. I understand Revis and his agent were also, largely, mostly, to blame, depending on one's POV. But it never made sense to me to think that Tanny could not have played that somewhat better, too. The bottom line is the roster is not as talented as it was claimed to be. Whether that kind of standard is a fair one for judging Tanny, let's just say he's not winning Exec of the Year this year.
I agree with everything. Great point about the lack of QB depth. Brunell as the #2 is a joke. Yesterday made it painfully clear that as bad as Sanchez played, there really are no other options.
yeah, that represents the gamble they took putting all their eggs in MS's basket. You want to hear a really depressing stat fact? Last year, Sanchez was ranked 28th in the league for passing for the year. You know where he is right now? 28th. Ouch. I mean really Ouch.
Now everyone is being irrational. Tannenbaum did a nice job of adding value. This is all on the players and coaches....mostly the coaches.
Who cares about the backup QB? Brady aside, pretty much nobody ever makes a deep playoff run with their backup QB.
Several of the picks were questionable then, but you like the Wilson pick? Well let's see, that leaves us, ummmm 2 other picks. But yeah, several were definitely questionable......
The offseason has been great. how can you discount what cro and holmes have done this season? mcourty and hayden were taking before wilson so its not like we had an option and both don't have cro and revis ahead of them. if we drafted either of them they'd only be playing a nickel back this year. Mcknight hasn't had a chance cause LT and Greene are ahead of them. if woodhead was here he'd be doing nothing more then playing special teams. TJ is having a good season, but the chiefs o-line has been amazing this year. TJ has 190 carries for 766 yards 4.0 avg. his "back-up" has 192 carries for 1177 yards and a 6.1 average. in contrast LT has 193 Carries for 837 yards a 4.3 average greene has 161 carries for 656 a 4.1 YPC. More importantly TJ has 12 catches for 108 LT has 49 for 348, how are me missing TJ? Feely had to be let go if we wnated jason taylor and in our desperate need for a pass rusher we did. we got stuck in some stupid rules and basically penalized for doing good in a 2 years before the CBA expired. If we didn't make the final four or if there was a CBA MT would have kept him. can't blame him for that Faneca i don't think we miss that much. he was a cap casualty. next year he would have cost alot, by cutting him free we take a hit in a uncapped year and are free of his salary next year. slauson is playing very well too. We had a good offseason. we went 9-7 last year, at this point last yeayrwe were 7-6 and lost to fall to 7-7 and was pronounced dead by our own coach. right now we are 9-4 and still in good control of a wildcard spot
Completely agree. This is clearly Sanchez's team so I'm not suggesting a backup to compete for the starting job with him, but Lord, you have to have someone on the roster to insert to spark the team. Brunell is not the answer. What the hell is the point of these bodies on the roster that you have no intention of putting in unless the QB dies on the field?
Tannenbaum did a fine job. Lets please remember the team is still 9-4. yes it feels like we're overrated and not that good but a win in Pittsburgh or Chicago and a cake walk win vs buffalo and an 11-5 season will change a lot. Does it seem likely right now? not the way the offense is playing. but we know how quickly things change in the NFL. we can beat any team with the talent we have. Forget Mr T. I'm more jealous of the Pats. They have 95 more thousand draft picks this season and they'll just keep reloading over and over again. McCourty looks like the next Revis/Aso type elite corner. They're just piled with young talent and picks and they have Brady and Belichick which is all you need.
tannenbaum took a shot this year, he brought in some guys who were questionable character guys but had tremendous talent. holmes is a piece of garbage but has played well. although lets not forget he did miss the first 4 games because he is a selfish piece of crap. i really cant complain about cromartie as he has played well for the most part. the concern isnt so much that last years draft class hasnt produced any stars, its that we have traded up to get particular guys a little too often which leads to the draft we have coming this spring... which is a direct inversion of what a team like the patriots has this year. i think we were a little short sighted and wanted to win too soon. i also think there was tremendous pressure to win now because of the psls and new stadium. but we are 9-4 and will make the playoffs so you really cant get on him too much.
Didn't you guys give up a 2nd and 3rd for Cromartie? Admittedly he has been pretty solid this season (better than I expecter) but that isn't exactly chump change.
