BGA: Texans at Jets

Disclaimer: All analysis was taken from the TV coverage, so at times it may have been hard to identify players or what was happening, because I was limited by their footage. However, I have tried to be as accurate as possible and apologize for any inaccuracies or omissions (which I am happy to correct).

Here comes this week’s in-depth analysis of the win over the Texans. If you have anything else you’d like me to comment upon, please leave your requests in the comments and I’ll do a follow-up post tomorrow morning. (Note: I had a record number of requests for analysis following this game, so thanks for doing that on the short week. Anyway, hopefully most of your questions will be answered here, but if they aren’t, please restate them in the comments to save me having to go back and search).

After the jump, catch my analysis of Sunday’s game, including – but not limited to – comments on Wayne Hunter, Darrelle Revis and Calvin Pace.

Strategy

There. I renamed the first paragraph. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Aside from the offensive gameplan, where the Jets either ran too much or didn’t run enough, depending on who you are, what jumped out at me this week, was a slightly different approach defensively, perhaps in response to some of the things that have been happening in recent weeks.

Although Darrelle Revis was matched up with Andre Johnson most of the time – and proved himself to be fully capable of handling that matchup, even without safety support much of the time – the Jets opted to play quite a lot of zone coverages, rather than have Revis on him all the time. In particular, they double covered him at the line, often with Jim Leonhard playing the role of cornerback and Revis playing off, almost in what you would term safety support. Also, Revis often matched up on him at the line, but only stayed with him if he ran downfield, instead passing him off to a safety if he cut across the field.

So, why would they do this? Did they not feel Revis could cope with the matchup? I actually think that the opposite was true. They knew Revis would be able to handle the matchup – and felt confident enough that Cromartie would be able to do the same with whoever else he faced – but rather than allow the Texans to eliminate Revis from the equation by targeting the other matchups, the Jets wanted to increase his overall impact on the game, by having him helping out with downfield zone coverages (a major weakness) whenever Johnson didn’t go downfield.

And, you know what? It worked. Last week, Colt McCoy passed for 173 of his 205 yards over the middle. This week, Matt Schaub had only 90 yards over the middle out of a total of 254 yards. For three quarters, the Jets defense held firm, giving up less than 160 yards. It was only major breakdowns that enabled the Texans to get back into the game at the end.

Those major breakdowns:

- Jason Taylor admitted he messed up when he didn’t run with Joel Dreessen on his touchdown catch. However, Antonio Cromartie ran with Kevin Walter on a post pattern, whereas if he had realized Dreessen was uncovered and ran with him on the outside, there were other defensive backs (including Revis) that could have picked up Walter on the inside. It probably still would have been a big completion, but not a touchdown.
- When Revis abandoned David Anderson over by the sideline, it was apparent that he thought there would be safety help behind him. Drew Coleman, Jim Leonhard and Brodney Pool all ran deep with Andre Johnson, leaving plenty of space behind Revis, who may also have believed Schaub had crossed the line of scrimmage. Some of the Jets players on the sideline motioned towards the deep guys as if to say “Where were you?” and Brodney Pool – who perhaps tellingly was benched for the rest of the game – had his arms outstretched in apparent confusion.
- Johnson beat Revis for a 20 yard catch with a good move on the outside where he was able to get Revis off-balance. Although everybody is saying Revis held Johnson to 4-32, this was actually the only catch Johnson had with Revis on him. Let us not forget that this Johnson kid is pretty good.
- On second and six at the ten with the Jets holding Arian Foster to less than four yards a carry, you might have expected them to put the Texans in a third and short situation with a six point lead, which based on the way the run defense had been playing, you might have backed them to stop. However, Foster ran down to the two and set up the apparent winning touchdown. And why? The Jets only had ten men on the field! A stunning breakdown at that stage of proceedings.

With the short week, I don’t expect the Jets to overhaul their approach for the Bengals game. As I said, it was very successful for most of the game. Rex says they’ve fixed the issues. We’ll see.

On offense, I paid particular attention to the slant patterns this week because people are questioning why they don’t do it all the time. I have a perfect example why. On the play where Matt Slauson was beaten and Sanchez got sacked, both the RWR and the slot receiver went on quick slant routes and in each case the cornerbacks jumped the routes, so Sanchez could not make the throw. It probably would have been a sack anyway, but that’s not the point. Yes, the slant looks like an easy play when the defender plays off his man, but that wasn’t the approach they took very often and they were ready for it.

Quarterback

It was, in short, a terrific performance by Mark Sanchez. He really has started to display another level of confidence and pocket presence over the last few weeks. Earlier in the season, he was most effective when getting rid of the ball quickly and efficiently. When pressure came, which wasn’t very often, he made poor decisions and held onto the ball too long.

Over the last couple of games, the amount of pressure has increased as a few players are banged up on the offensive line. The level of pressure sky-rocketed this week, but we’ll deal with that in a bit. Maybe this has helped Sanchez to develop, because he’s finally forced into those situations several times a game, especially when the team is losing and he cannot afford to throw the ball away or eat it. The more he is in those situations, the more confident he seems in his ability to elude pressure, scan the field and make a play. It’s just like when a soccer or hockey goalie in soccer gets into a rhythm by having a ton of shots to save, so the team that hardly gets any shots ends up winning because that goalie wasn’t as prepared.

Last week, Sanchez was 9-for-9 for 106 yards throwing left and this week he was 7-for-8 for 95 yards throwing right, so you can toss out the “he can only throw to his left” theory right off the bat. He had some great throws: A laser of a long out to Patrick Turner, several perfect quick slants, a pinpoint long bomb to Braylon Edwards and a fade pass with perfect touch to Santonio Holmes to win it. He also tucked and ran for two first downs, so obviously he reads BGA.

Offensive Line

Warning: This next paragraph contains statistics some people might find disturbing.

- First nine games: QB hits – nine (one per game), Pressures – 43 (less than five per game).
- Sunday: QB hits – seven. Pressures – 24.

Ouch.

(That was me saying that, but it might as well have been Mark Sanchez.)

How on earth did the Texans manage to generate so much pressure?

- We all knew Wayne Hunter’s weakness was dealing with speed rushers. He was beaten to the outside early and often. In total: One sack, one QB hit, eight pressures. Yes, eight. Again, ouch.
- Mario Williams is freaking good. Maybe the Jets should count themselves lucky. Against the Colts in week one, he had two sacks, five QB hits and four pressures.
- Antonio Smith doesn’t get a lot of sacks, but he does generate a lot of pressure (over three a game). He added six.
- It wasn’t just Hunter that was getting beaten, D’Brickashaw Ferguson gave up a hit and five pressures. No sacks though. He’s given up two hits and nine pressures in the last two games, but only two hits and four pressures (and two sacks) in the other eight games.
- Also, Matt Slauson gave up a sack, two hits and two pressures. He’s clearly limited by his knee and you saw that on the sack he gave up. It’s lateral mobility that appears to be the problem and the DT faked outside then cut inside as Slauson struggled to make the adjustment in time. It was similar to the last play he was involved in against the Browns.
- The Texans blitzed 20 times and the Jets only left in a total of 20 extra blockers in 45 dropbacks, which is actually less than usual.
- Nick Mangold and Brandon Moore gave up two pressures each and LaDainian Tomlinson gave up a hit and a pressure.
- Sanchez holding onto the ball for too long accounted for one sack, two hits and four pressures. His passer rating was 53.2 when pressured, but 147.3 when not pressured.

The run blocking was only slightly better. All three tackles were poor, but the interior linemen did okay. Mangold had easily the best game on the line again, and even graded out positively in pass protection.

Two things I must address before we move on. First of all, you would be well within your rights to ask why the Jets didn’t leave more guys in to block. Clearly Hunter in particular could have done with some help. I assume this must have had something to do with the fact that they perhaps didn’t focus on having an extra guy in to block during the week. With two games in five nights, they may have installed a very specific gameplan for each contest and not been as prepared as they would have liked to use those plays that utilize an extra blocker. The other factor is, of course, that – despite the pressure – they were still moving the ball well and the spread-the-field approach of their two minute offense would perhaps have been less efficient without a running back being available as a checkdown option.

The other thing I wanted to address was Shonn Greene’s fumble, which was at least partially attributable to a breakdown on the offensive line. Apparently, Sanchez audibled to a run after the tight end shifted and then shifted back into his original position. Greene was hit in the backfield as pressure came up the middle. One factor I haven’t seen mentioned that almost certainly added to the confusion was that Brandon Moore had left the game, so Rob Turner had entered at Right Guard. It was the only appearance on offense for Turner all day, although he and Wayne Hunter were in on three snaps on the goalline defense.

Running Backs

It was a struggle for the Jets to get anything going on the ground. LaDainian Tomlinson averaged three yards per carry and Shonn Greene was held to 2.8 yards per carry (although he was at 3.7 ypc before the fumble, which would be his last carry of the game). The offensive line didn’t give them much help, as they averaged just 1.0 yards per carry before contact.

Give them credit though, for making the most of a bad situation. Each of them broke three tackles and Tomlinson actually had 107 all-purpose yards after catching seven of the nine balls thrown to him by Sanchez, including an enormous 21 yarder on a dump-off up the middle on the final drive.

Tony Richardson had a poor game in terms of run blocking, but did rush for a first down on his first carry of the season. John Conner was okay, but continues to be used sparingly.

Tight Ends and Receivers

Despite the fact that Jerricho Cotchery was out, Sanchez was still able to pass for over 300 yards. Braylon Edwards caught four of the six passes thrown his way and should have had a pass interference call too. He continued to make big plays and is now 9th in the league in average yards per catch.

To make up for the loss of Cotchery, the Jets, as expected, mostly just used Brad Smith in his place. Edwards also got a bigger workload, they used Dustin Keller out wide or in the slot nine times (which is no more than they usually do) and Patrick Turner saw a handful of reps. Out of all these options, Turner was probably the most impressive, with a nice 20 yard reception off a well-executed long out route and a hustling tackle on Kevin Bentley that saved a touchdown after Sanchez threw his interception. Perhaps as a result, he found himself on the field during the two minute drill at the end of the game.

Although they blocked well, Keller and Smith combined for just 12 yards and each dropped a pass, as Keller was often matched up with a defensive back. Could Smith’s increased workload as a receiver limit his effectiveness in the Seminole? The Jets only used it four times on Sunday.

Ben Hartsock had another unremarkable game and Matthew Mulligan was only on the field for two snaps. For the record, here is how often the Jets passed the ball when their so-called “obvious run personnel” was in the game (with the numbers for the season in brackets):

Hartsock – 30% (32%)
Mulligan – 0% (38%)
Conner – 16% (25%)
Richardson – 46% (41%)
Hunter (as a TE) – N/A (44%)

Oh, and that Santonio Holmes kid is pretty good, too.

Defensive Line

Another major concern following this game was the lack of pressure generated defensively. Shaun Ellis is probably the best pass rusher on this team at the moment, with Calvin Pace seemingly not at full strength. He had a hit and a pressure and is currently second in the NFL in total pressures from the 3-4 DE position. Other than that, the Jets had one sack (Thomas), one other hit (Gholston) and five more pressures (two each from Taylor and Pryce, plus one from Leonhard).

The Jets blitzed 17 times, sent an average number of rushers of 4.1 (slightly lower than usual) and had to deal with just 22 extra blockers on 35 dropbacks. Houston dealt with the blitzes by getting rid of the ball quickly and handled three and four man rushes easily all day. When he was pressured, Schaub was just 3-for-7 for 12 yards, but clearly that didn’t happen enough.

They are still mixing up the blitz packages. Thomas’ sack came from an overload blitz where they dropped Shaun Ellis into coverage and sent Coleman, Leonhard and Ihedigbo off the edge and Jason Taylor on the other side.

Perhaps in an effort to get more pressures, they shook up the defensive line rotations this week, using Pryce more often in four man fronts and going with a three man front of Pace-Pryce-Taylor on many passing downs.

Vernon Gholston deserves a mention for his hit on Schaub, which actually saw him beat an offensive lineman with a swim move. Gholston continues to make the most of not many opportunities, as he was limited to 11 snaps here. Other than that, his best moment came when the Texans went to hurry up near the goalline and he drove Eric Winston back to set up Jason Taylor’s tackle for a loss.

In terms of stopping the run, all three starting linemen were excellent. Arian Foster, the league’s leading rusher, was held to 84 yards on 22 carries and it could have been less. Jim Leonhard appeared to be held on his longest run of the day, a 19-yarder. Mike DeVito also blew up a screen and forced a fumble.

Linebackers

Bart Scott was another key reason why the running game was held in check on Sunday, in his usual attacking-the-line role. It didn’t seem like the Jets made any adjustments at half time, just that Foster had fewer carries when the Texans fell behind. I also focused on Scott in coverage and he seemed to be consistently in position all day. The only pass made to his man was the screen pass that DeVito stuffed.

Bryan Thomas also had a solid game, although he did give up outside contain on one big run. He had the only sack of the day and only gave up two catches for six yards.

Calvin Pace, on the other hand, still does not seem to be at full strength, although he had started to look good a few weeks ago. He gave up outside contain by overpursuing twice and didn’t record a single pressure in 26 attempts, although 10 of those came as part of a three man rush. Pace was in on 51 snaps and Thomas was only in on 29. Perhaps that should change.

David Harris was okay, but only had six tackles and also didn’t record a pressure in nine pass rush attempts. He was also thrown at five times and gave up three catches for 37 yards, including a 20-yarder by Foster.

Finally, Jason Taylor rushed the passer on 16 of 22 plays against the Browns. Against Houston it was 22 times on 34 plays. He did register two pressures and also had a tackle for a loss, but he publicly admitted he was at fault for the Dreessen touchdown, so it was a mixed bag.

Defensive Backs

We talked about Revis above. He held Andre Johnson to one catch for 20 yards and also contributed to the improvements in the zone coverage downfield. However, he has a strange habit of getting beaten on the rare occasions where he finds himself not covering the main guy he’s been focusing on. Greg Lewis, Nate Burleson and David Anderson have all done this to him this year, although all three could be described as zone coverages. Even thinking back to the postseason, he shut down Chad Johnson, but then Laveranues Coles caught a pass the only time they were matched up. The only theory I have on this is that Revis is thrown off rhythm or perhaps loses focus in these situations. Overall, his numbers are starting to look comparable to last year. He wasn’t good in run support on Sunday though, and he had a bad missed tackle on Foster.

Other than Dreessen’s touchdown, which may not really be his fault, Antonio Cromartie just gave up a 13-yard pass to Kevin Walter and broke up two of the other four passes thrown his way, so we can say he did his part.

The safety play continued to be a problem, but Jim Leonhard does seem to have turned a corner. He deflected the only pass thrown to him this week, the third straight game where he hasn’t been victimized. Leonhard wasn’t so good in run support this week, with just three tackles and his first missed tackle in seven weeks, but he did recover a fumble.

Brodney Pool and Eric Smith, on the other hand, were targeted quite a lot, giving up six catches for 85 yards on seven passes. It looked like Pool was benched, as indeed Smith was – for Pool – earlier in the season. James Ihedigbo doesn’t seem to be the answer though. He was ineffective in his 12 snaps. At least Pool led the team with six solo tackles.

Drew Coleman and Kyle Wilson split reps this week and neither was a problem. Wilson seems to have found his second wind. As for Coleman, he nearly stole an interception from a receiver, Green Bay Packer-style.

Special Teams

Once again, Steve Weatherford was excellent this week. Despite missing a 53-yarder, Nick Folk hopefully showed that last week’s struggles were an aberration too. Jim Leonhard had a big punt return and the kickoff coverage was excellent, spearheaded by Joe McKnight (two tackles) of all people. McKnight also did a solid job as the primary gunner on the punt unit. One blip: Sione Pouha missed a block that almost caused an extra point to be blocked. It wouldn’t have made any difference to the outcome, but…just don’t let that happen again, okay?

Conclusions

I usually dwell one last time on this week’s game in this section, but I find myself already looking ahead to Thursday. The Bengals only had one sack, four hits and three pressures against Buffalo, even though they only left 14 extra blockers in on 39 dropbacks. However, they will surely blitz more than 13 times on Thursday having seen what the Texans did on Sunday. Assuming Damien Woody can’t go or is limited, the pass protection issues must improve, otherwise it will take more heroics from Sanchez to even give the Jets a chance. We can’t rely on him to do that every week, can we?

Another good game for Weatherford. There's a strong argument that he should be the AFC's Pro Bowl punter. He's second in net average to Lechler by 2.1 yards, having had one more punt (51 to 50), but leads him in fair catches (19-6) and I20 (21-17).

Sam Koch is another contender, but he's slightly worse than Weatherford in those categories with the exception of I20 (23-21).

I can see Lechler making it due to tenure, but if Weatherford is the pro bowl alternate, its the same as being voted to go.

Right now he's an great punter.

Lol, I can't remember a time when I've been so pleased with our punter, (hmm Early Ben Graham actually).
Pro bowl will still see Lechler, jut with his reputation , pro bowl still sucks.

Not a hater, but come on BP, SURELY you have to be getting it by now?
Didn't like the pick up initially and the whole concussion thing has me still worried.
I pray that we get a new FS, Pool just isn't very good and is a poor communicator which for a FS is crucial.

Apparently safety is a difficult position to fill in this defense. I've been begging for d-line to be taken early in the draft for years but I wonder if a top flight safety wouldn't be more useful?

Does anyone know if Gilbert cleared waivers and got re-signed to the practice squad?

It seems to me that if our safeties are getting beat so bad... why not move Lowery into the position and see what he does with it?

At worst, it should shore up our problem with letting TEs burn us every week. That's going to be an especially big problem vs. the Patriots.

Pool has been about as below average and uninspiring as a safety can play... let's see if Lowery can at least bring his penchant for making big plays in spots to the position.

This is my biggest concern this season. I must have screamed at the TV a dozen times at least about this, and yes the Pats are going to rip us, look what Hernandez did last time out.

And they scored 14 points. Most teams don't use a TE as the focal point of there offense. We will be focused on stopping those two cock suckers now that Moss is gone.

Rex is very good at taking away an offenses strength.

I still think you go DLine. Nothing makes a secondary look better than good pressure up front. I think we'd find our current safeties to suddenly look like pro-bowlers if we could get good, consistent up front pressure.

DLine seems obvious because of Ellis age and DeVito's hold-the-fort-ness... but a playmaking safety or a monster pass rushing OLB would go a long way as well.

Thats why the loss of Kris Jenkins hurts so much. Not only was he a force in run defense, but he would occasionally blow up his blocker and get in the backfield and force pressures.

So it sounds like Rex made an adjustment in coverage to try to keep Revis and Cromatie more around the ball. As opposed to just letting them cover the opposing teams wr's and taking them out of the game. i figured Rex would make some kind of adjustment. It seemed like for the most part with the exception of a few broken plays the Texans had a tough time passing on the Jets.

The personnel at safety is forcing the coaching staff to change the defense.

The good thing is that safety is probably one of the easiest positions to upgrade. Whether they sign someone or use a draft pick they should be able to upgrade the position without spending a fortune.

Tomorrow should be interesting because the Bengals have good receivers and a typical tight end that causes match up problems for the Jets. I think they will win because a 2-8 team playing on a short week are probably not going to bring the same energy to the game and the Bengals just aren't that good.

At what point do you think the defenses will stop playing 8 in the box and run blitzing linebackers on every first/second down?
