Very true. This year, opposing QBs have completed 49.5% against us, best in the league. Oakland is 2nd at 53.4%. Fun fact: New England is dead last at 70.1%.
True. We're on the up and up. Revis looked good last week and if our pass rush starts to come around we'll be dynamite. Although I would hate to stop some people from letting cold, hard facts get in the way of retarded knee jerk reaction.
The only real issue I have with the defense is the continued lack of a consistently effective conventional pass rush. But as others have already pointed out, no defense is perfect and I'd still stack our unit up against any other unit in the league.
I think its the reason the Steelers defense is a step above ours right now. They seem to get to the QB while protecting the middle of the field better. Defending against TE/RB passes and getting to the QB are the two areas that need improvement. Not sure how they'll do it, but Rex will figure it out. Its frustrating that the Jets are holding the QBs to low completion %, yet it seems that doesn't equate to mistakes lately, just incompletions. Hopefully a few of those will become INTs. Nice to see we've improved on 3rd down conversions.
Let's face it, teams rarely throw to their Tight Ends, so those stats are misleading. I think the point everyone is trying to make is that our blitz packages leave us vulnerable to short to mid-range passes down the middle (whether to a tight end or a slot receiver) and that we just do not have the speed at linebacker or reliable slot coverage to combat it. Again, this isn't the worst problem a defense can have, so we should be very happy.
Maybe I'm wrong, I'm no football expert, I'm just talking. But it may not be the number of catches by TE/RB, but the timing. It seems like those are the ones that burn us at the wrong time. Again, I could be wrong, just discussing.
It is not TEs that are hurting the D, it's really whatever receiver is going over the middle on 3rd and long. And you can't say Hernandez is not a true TE, that's more of an excuse. The guy plays TE, he's 6'1 and 245lbs....it just so happens he can run. Even if Manning is "the only QB" who can burn us with this strategy, has Rex not called Peyton his nemesis, the one guy he's been unable to take down?
Something has to give. If Pitt's D is so good at run stuffing and middle throws, then the corners are the weaker links. They don't have a Revis & Cro combo. Jets D is stout up front. Lack of pass rush hurts, but what part of the defense to you want to decline to get a top tier pass rush? You can't have top notch players in every position in every facet of the team. If the D is outstanding then the offense is going to suffer. Pick the poison you want. Our pass rushing sucks, but we don't give up the deep balls that most teams do. I'll take our current D any time. And PManning was playing out of his mind in the AFCCG last year. Even if Strickland didn't get hurt, Peyton was getting in a groove after the 2 sacks and would have carved up the secondary anyway.
Absolutely. You could literally see him pointing out to his blockers where the blitz was going to come from before every snap. I can say this now (since I was too pissed to say it back then) but it really was impressive to watch and really sold me on the idea that he might be the best QB of all time.
Sorry I still put the blame on Coleman. The bottom line is Kyle Wilson was covering better then Coleman. You can clearly see that Wilson is faster/quicker and in the Ravens game was all over the receivers despite their receptions. Coleman just gets straight up burned...
