Forcing the run when the defense stacks the box doesn't make sense. This defensive scheme means that there will be open receivers down the field. Against the Pack, if Jets receivers hold onto the ball & start getting points then guess what ....... defenders get pulled out of the box & now you can run against fewer defenders. Defenses that stack the box do change up when they see the passing game tearing them apart. Jets have decent receivers & a good catching TE & can normally punish defenses that go down this road. Execution sucked & Pack didn't suffer for their defensive philosophy. Minus the fake punt & Sanchez runs, Jets rushing game was less than 4 yards per carry. Why keep running into the wall when you know receivers will be open? Jets need to play their next game asap because panic is starting to run wild here.
Lol. Maybe a little strong with the description but he is better suited to run against a stacked box. Just like Greene is. TJ did deliver some punishing blows though.
I don't think the problem is our RB's or the split of carries. The problem last week was CLEARLY execution. The receivers and QB were in position to make big plays they just didn't make them. Once those plays are made the running game opens up because a) you're playing with the lead and b) they probably back off and start worry about the pass more. If we can't execute when the defense is giving us those plays we're not going to be very successful on offense. It was an off day.
wsw, you keep saying that passing will open up the run but i dont believe that is true. teams are going to dare sanchez to beat them regardless of how successful he is on a particular day. its their best shot at beating us, so they will stick with it we have to stick with our best shot at winning, as well, which is running the ball
Same here. If you want to compare this sort of thing honestly, you'd have to have a state about running when ahead/behind and the game situation. I would have liked to have seen the Jets try to run more against GB, but it just wasn't there. Like WSW said, the passing game was open for us, our WR's just didn't execute. It was a bad day.
I totally agree. Those were the two guys who I was most excited about on our offense coming into this season because they both seemed to be coming into their own. Regardless of the run/pass ratio, Greene and Keller not being involved more than they are is really disappointing.
We weren't running the ball well Sunday! We need to be able to take what the defense gives us. This is simple strategy. If the players don't execute we won't win many games.
Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the playcalling so far this season, the fact is that it goes against everything that Rex has said. He has repeatedly claimed that they're going to be a "ground and pound" team that is going to punch other teams in the mouth with a relentless running game, whether they stack the box to stop us or not. Either Schotty just doesn't get it and is not on the same page as Rex (which would really make me wonder why Rex wouldn't have stepped in and taken the reigns back by now) or Rex's comments about being a run-first team have just been a lot of hot air. I'm all for getting our elite core of WRs their fair share of touches, but this team needs to establish some kind of identity on offense.
I don't know if this was mentioned, because I skipped most of the thread, but often you run because you are winning and pass because you're trailing. So to look back after the fact, most teams win more when they run more but it's reverse logic in a way.
its been mentioned, but airing it out when your down by 3? I don't agree with it. Three points is not cause for throwing more when the game is a FG game for 50 minutes. Its silly.
nobody is advocating continually running into the middle of the line against a stacked box. but its up to the OC to have creative ways of springing rbs and utilizing your OL strength - especially when the receivers keep dropping the ball, getting the ball taken away and when your QB is struggling through the air. You must be able to run the ball - again that doesn't mean you always need to run directly into the strength of a stacked box.
we werent passing it well, either defenses are going to continue to give us favorable matchups in passing game, that doesnt mean we change the identity of this team if we just decide that were going to take what the defense gives us then we will continue to see 60-40, pass-run ratios and that is not a good look for this team
thank you! this is exactly what i was saying in this thread ... http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=60812
We didn't do anything well on offense. When we're given sure TD opportunities in the passing game we need to be able to take advantage of them. If we do, the run game WILL open up. If we don't, we will continue to see 8 and 9 in the box. If you want to ignore the fact that we have big play opportunities available in the passing game because god dammit we're a running team and if we run we will win, then you're probably being stubborn.
we are going to continue to see 8 and 9 in the box regardless of what our passing game is doing! ... did teams change their approach to sanchez after his torrid stretch? nope, in fact, id say they have committed even more to the run plus, the big play opportunities in the passing game are not going to disappear just because we run the ball more ... we will still have and take shots down field, they just need to be done more judiciously
I doubt it. If we start hitting those passes they will back off. I guess we're just going to have to agree to disagree. I say take what the defense is giving you, especially if you're struggling at running the ball. The only reason people are upset with the passing is that the players didn't execute. I'm not saying I want the Jets to be a 60/40 pass/run team, but if that's what teams are giving us we should take it. Execute.
Why are some Jet fans acting like Sanchez can't do shit now? Through the first 5 games he was top 5 in passer rating, only QB with no INT's and had 8 TD's. That guy did not disappear, the problem is Schotty trying to find a balance to incorporate Holmes. Personally I believe the Jets want Holmes to shine over Braylon so they can justify signing him over Braylon in 2011. That's all well and good but don't do it while sacrificing wins.
sanchez is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than he was last year, but he is not as good as he looked earlier this year, either (yet)
I don't think I have seen that in this thread. What I'm talking about is not straying from what works for this team. They are a running team. I fear what you say about Holmes being true, because they tried the same thing with Braylon last year and it ruined the middle of the season last year. Sanchez was forcing balls to Braylon, who isn't the best route runner. It did hurt Sanchez's progression. Holmes needs to be eased in without disruption. If he only has 40 receptions, he needs to bite the bullet.
