8 guys in the box makes that tough. They were daring us to throw it, we would've made them regret it if our receivers caught the ball. Our new plan is for our receivers to catch the ball then hand off to the opponent. It makes for a more interesting game when we are completely dominating them on defense too.
It's hard to look good calling plays when your line isn't opening holes and your WR's are dropping everything.
All that doesn't mean shit if our receivers simply hold onto the ball. Without those drops we EASILY have over 400 yards of offense, Sanchez throws for over 300 yards, and nobody is saying a word about the play calling ... garunteed. Not to mention, the running game was being stuffed anyway. When I see a guy drop a wide open TD pass (I'm talking to you Santonio Holmes) I'm yelling at the screen "catch the goddamn ball!!!" ... I'm not yelling "why aren't we running the ball more??". The plays were open all day and they should have been made ... our players just didn't do a good job yesterday. It happens. We'll be fine.
I guess you missed the article with the Packers saying they knew exactly what plays were going to run. I think they used the term "stale" play selection. People want to harp on that 3rd and 8 yet we also forget about the call on the other 3rd and 8 in which the first INT* took place. It's 3rd and 8 and we run a 3 yard slant. Even if that ball isn't intercepted* we still have to punt from that spot. I've erased most of the garbage I saw from this offense yesterday but that doesn't excuse the shit performance by the entire unit including the OC.
Plays like this make me wonder what whoever made that decision was thinking. It was either Schotty's play call or Sanchez's quick decision to throw it there. Either way, it was a horrible decision to make.
Judging from the way it happened my guess is it was from the OC, Mark didn't even look at another WR. It was a quick slant and that was probably the design and the way it was supposed to be executed just that apparently ties no longer go to the offense in the NFL at least when the Jets are involved.... and of course nobody from the league will say or do anything about the Jets getting screwed out of two horrific calls.
Stale play calling doesn't mean jack if the receivers hold onto the damn ball. How about 10+ stale points when the defense holds the other team to single digits ... is there still a problem?? The offensive execution sucked. Not every drive can be a TD but there were a lot of points left on the field because receivers literally dropped the ball. If the Packers can accurately predict every play the stale jets offense is running, do you think they'd be receivers open so often?
If they knew what plays we were going to run, then how did we manage to gain 360 yards? ... including 240 passing yards with 6 drops and two BS interceptions. If we simply catch/hold onto the ball ... then we pass for over 300 yards, drives continue, we score points and we win the game. I don't know why people want to act like there's so much more to it than that. No doubt their defense played well ... but we helped them stop our drives time after time with piss-poor execution, turnovers and dumb penalties. None of that is on Schotty.
Sure the ruling sucked. However, why even call that play? Or at least, why throw it so fast? He had no separation at all, that play was doomed from the start. The CB was all over him.
Are you stating that one bad call (which could've been from Sanchez also) impacted the game more than all the drops & receivers letting balls get snatched away?
No, however, I believe that the overall change in offensive philosophy since week 5 has hurt this team more than anything else.
Has there been a change in offensive philosophy or has their been a change in the defenses facing the Jets? The Pack stated before & after the game that they were going to stop the Jets running game no matter what. They wanted to stop the run so bad that they were giving Sanchez the chance to beat them through the air. There is no ground & pound team going to consistently run the ball succesfully when opposing defense has such a strategy. Why do you think there were WIDE OPEN receivers dropping balls. Did Cotchery all of a sudden become Jerry Rice & shake off defenders within 5 yards? Of course not. The Pack D was willing to give up the pass to shut down the run & it worked. The Jets execution sucked & couldn't force the Pack to change their defensive philosophy during the game. If the WR held onto the damn ball & the offense actually put up like 9 points & take the lead then the Pack D changes to more balance & then you ground & pound them. See how that works? Like a chess game. You make moves according to what you're opponent is doing. This is not like playing checkers by yourself. You've got to take into consideration what strategies your opponent is using & balance them against your own strength/weaknesses.
What do you expect the Packers to say, they just shut us out. Were they gonna say , yeah we were lucky the Jets dropped more balls than an one armed hooker or Hey we played ok but the Refs really helped us win. Of course they're gonna talk smack they won't have to face us again this year, unless they're fortunate enough to reach the SB.
8 guys in the box ALL of last season didn't stop the Jets from being the number 1 rushing attack in the league last year so why is it this year??? Vikings game: Terrible conditions rain wind hail we pass 40+ times and run maybe 25..... Denver game: A team that can't stop the run, Sanchez is clearly struggling but yet another game where Sanchez almost throws 40 and the run game is in the 25 range. Packers game: A defensive line that is thin and worn down Sanchez is struggling and again 38 pass attempts and only 21 run attempts.... The playcalling is a problem because our offense was looking great when we we were more balanced or running more than we passed and letting Sanchez feed off the playaction. Its been bad playcalling for the last three games not just this one, this one just confirms that after a bye week they don't know how to add Holmes into the mix.
What was odd is it seemed like GB knew the exact spot we were running it each time. Maybe Rex understated how much Howard Green knew, but I'm sure he couldn't have known that much about the offense. We were talking about it with other fans around us, it seemed like on every run there were 4-5 guys waiting or attacking LT/Shonn.
Our run calls were very vanilla, we only did a few stretch plays and LT almost broke one (he got tripped up or he was gone).... We seemed to just stay between the tackles most game.. Brad Smiths fumble if he would of pitched that to LT he might of scored, the entire Packer D flew to Brad and no one claimed LT. I also don't like how Keller seems to be the rotational guy instead of Cotch... Keller is the guy who has the most chemistry with Sanchez but instead it seems like hes the guy who comes off the field the most to get Holmes involved.... Considering Edwards and Holmes are our best recievers and run blockers shouldn't they constantly be on the field with Keller in all of our base offensive sets and then Cotch come in when we go to 3WR sets??? Screw it, I give up. LETS GO JETS!
The lack of targets to Keller has been driving me nuts. Up through week 4 Keller had caught 5 TD's, 19 catches for 254 yards. This was on 30 targets. In the next 3 games 0 TD's, 7 catches for 134 yards. This was on 17 targets. After the game 1 crap, Sanchez and Keller exploded onto the scene because in the game 1 Keller only had 13 yards and 0 TD's. So most of that production came in weeks 2-4. Those same weeks Sanchez had a QB rating of 124.3, 120.5, and 106.4, throwing 8 TD's to 0 INT's, and 5 of those 8 were to Keller. I don't get how Schotty could break away from this model, with Holmes there or not.
He certainly looked like he knew what was coming on that reverse that nearly ended in another turnover.
