Blame whoever you want. The offense didn't execute. Inconsistency is running rampant this year in the NFL so until the bad part of the Jets' inconsistency becomes consistent, I won't worry.
Obviously you don't rework and entire offensive scheme mid-season, that should be a no-brainer. As far as the play calling, I'm honestly not qualified to say. It's easy to second guess stuff that doesn't work. Intuitively though I must say I sense there is something wrong with this offense in general, and ultimately the OC has to answer for that. Our QB's stat line makes no sense. Tied for fewest picks going into the game yesterday... 9 TD's (8 to just two players) yet owning one of the lowest completion percentages in the league? The obvious conclusion one might draw from this is that the plays (as they are drawn up) just aren't there...forcing Mark to check down. The problem with that theory is that he should be checking down to higher percentage plays but the numbers say he's not converting those at an acceptable level. So what's wrong? I think Mark Sanchez is being mishandled. On the one hand he's being told that his number one priority is not to lose games by being careless with the football, yet at the same time they have increased the pass/run ratio to where it is now about 50/50... Why? They are coddling LT. They are deathly afraid of losing him, and (whether they want to admit this or not) have lost a bit of confidence in SG to be a feature back. So their overall strategy seems to be something along the lines of....use LT early in the game and let him wear down the D line chasing him around.... Spell him later in the game with SG and let him run over people. and balance the pass/run ratio overall because I get the sense that they don't trust SG's ability to find holes and create 2nd/3rd and short the way LT or TJ (last year) can/could. The result is they are passing more than they probaby should, and teams are recognizing that MS is hesitant to throw at his first read down the field, leaving them a bit freer to cover the underneath stuff. This is the only explaination I can think of for a QB forced to check down to what should be higher percentage passes having such a poor completion percentage. At the end of the day I think it's their overall philosophy that's driectly affecting their play calling, and I think a lot of it has to do with their coddling of LT, lack of confidence in SG, and their sending mixed messages to MS. That makes Rex every bit as responsible as Schotty. I think the obvious solution is that a) SG needs to see a lot more touches. He was suppsosed to be the feature back. Let the guy play. b) Stop putting the fear of God in MS with the whole protect the ball mantra, good QB's get intercepted, but more than make up for it with the big plays.
I only recall one trick play on offense ( the double reverse). The Wildcat or Brad Smith package is part of our normal offense . The fake punt is on Westhoff or Rex.
The WC is a trick play and we use it way too much. We had the reverse, the LT halfback option, the WC plays. It's too much.
The WC isn't a trick play. The LT option play was a great call with a guy like LT running it. He saw it wasn't there and pulled it down and gained some yards. That reverse was bullshit and I hope we never see it or anything like it ever again.
I agree. I don't know how someone can go on and on about the calling of plays that would have worked but didn't because of poor execution by the players. How great was that play call on the pass to Holmes that he dropped? Was it BS's fault on third and long that MS (apparently) checked down to a three yard slant? Plus as others have noted the chance that an OC of a team at 5-2 would be canned mid season is zero. Having said that, I cannot defend the entire CS's role in apparently not getting this team ready for the game. Since the D played quite well, for the most part, and you can't do much about the zebras being pro-Green Bay, that leaves much of the lacking on the shoulders of Ryan and Schotty. Didn't care for the fake punt neither, but that apparently is not Westhoff's fault. This is the second game in a row where Sanchez has not looked sharp. I don't know why, but that's not good. Callahan also probably shares some of the blame. Imo the OL was not impressive, Woody in particular looked slow. It's only one game, but this team does not look like an SB bound team right now by any means. that Giant Jet thread from last week looks especially dopey right now.
The WC is a gimmick play, a trick play. There's no need to run 5-6 WC plays a game and the LT call was horrendous w/ the FP we had at that point in the game. How is an offense supposed to get in rhythm w/ all these damn trick plays?
excellent that the SOJF have their week in the sun to bray, bellow, scream and call for everyone to be fired after the next four wins over the Lions, Browns, Texans and Bengals, fortunately, they will once again crawl back under their rocks like insects and go away
I dislike Schotty for the most part, but even I don't want to see him fired after one bad game. Ok, well this is 2 bad games.. but we had several very good ones in between. Really, this is just knee-jerk bullshit. Some of you should learn not to post for 24 hours after the game. You would look less stupid. lol
He should've been fired along with Mangini. But that's ancient history. We obviously can't fire him mid season so we're stuck with him for this season, like it or not. Shotty is like that girl that you love to bang. Always want to keep her around for a good piece but never want to make a commitment because you can't stand the thought of her being around you 24/7. This guy would drive any fanbase crazy with his mutliple personality playcalling style.
With the field position? The field position that the players had been pissing away by not holding onto the ball and committing stupid penalties? Your gonna complain about a play that didn't work and still gained about as many yards as any other running play the Jets ran yesterday. The WC with Smith has been money all season so after one mediocre day it's hurting the offense. It wasn't hurting when the offense was putting up all those points on the Pats, Dolphins, Bills, and Vikings. The only trick play call that set the offense back was the reverse, which was a dumb call because that play never works.
I'm not compalining b/c the play didn't work. We are calling too many trick plays inclduing the WC which has worked many times. We finally started getting into a rhythm on O and we call back to back trick plays w/ the 2nd one resulting in the fumble. I'm sick of so many WC plays, they are becoming less effective each week. we are overusing them.
Somebody should tell Shotty to stop being like his father! Be a man and fking run the ball like we did last year! We are a ground and pound team on offense!
Schotty over-thinks himself when he has to much time off e.g. packers, and ravens. And when he does our offense sucks. That and wr's kept dropping balls, bad calls, and the fake picks. There's blame enough to go around. This loss is no big deal how we respond to it is one.
