The Patriots are reportedly talking to the San Diego Chargers about acquiring Vincent Jackson in exchange for disgruntled New England guard Logan Mankins. Tom E. Curran of CSN New England reported Thursday night that the Patriots had "looked into the possibility" of swinging a trade for Jackson and that the two sides are in preliminary talks. One way to fill the void you just created at wide receiver by trading Randy Moss to Minnesota if you are the New England Patriots is to bring in a younger version of the future of Hall-of-Famer, which explains why the Pats would be interested in Jackson. Acquiring the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Jackson, who is holding out in San Diego because of a contract dispute, would give New England's Tom Brady that big target with speed to go deep he had in Moss, only with fresher legs. Moss is listed at 6-4, 210 on the Vikings' official website and at 33 is six years older than the 27-year-old Jackson. According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers are seeking a first- and a second-round pick from an AFC team for Jackson, but would accept a second- and a third-round pick from an NFC team. In this rumored case, you are talking about two players in Jackson and Mankins looking for a change of scenery after believing they were wronged by their current teams. Earlier, there were reports that the Patriots and Seattle Seahawks were in talks about a possible deal to send Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch back to the team he was drafted by and won a Super Bowl MVP trophy with. Branch is only 5-9, 195, so he doesn't the bring the size and deep-threat possibilities that Jackson brings to the table. As the trade deadline fast approaches, things no doubt will get more interesting on this front. UPDATE: Citing a media source in San Diego, Curran reported later Thursday night that the Chargers had no interest in dealing for Mankins. He added that in order for Jackson -- or any player for that matter -- to be traded, he would first need to be under contract, meaning Jackson would have to sign his restricted free agent tender offer before he could be dealt.
This deal would take an awful lot of moving parts to get done. They were discussing this earlier on Sirius NFL Radio. I believe it was with Pat Kirwan. He didn't give much credence to it, and Adam Schefter disputed it earlier today. It seems unlikely despite the obvious benefits for both teams.
I don't want to see Jackson twice a year. I know the update says the chargers have no interest in dealing for mankins but I had a sick feeling when I heard about the Moss deal.
I just saw that. The Chargers really SHOULD have an interest in dealing for Mankins, but AJ Smith is probably going to insist that he doesn't want anyone with a propensity to hold out. If this deal could really go through if only for his sign-off, he's seriously hurting the team. I read another report today that Jackson and Mankins will both sign by Week 10 due to an obscure clause in the CBA which alters the rules for FA for final year holdouts. That would essentially negate the entire purpose of their holdouts. We'll see. I believe that one was Schefter as well.
The Moss move makes no sense for the Pats, that is unless they had no intention of resigning him. But even so why give away a top WR for a mid round dp? Belichick probably has something up his sleeve.
Vincent Jackson can't play until Week 7, against San Diego. I hardly think the Chargers are going to do that to themselves, but even if they did, New England will have its work cut out for it. -X-
It sounds like this isnt a very likely scenario. It seems, to me at least, Branch is the more likely guy to end up in NE next week.
I can just imagine NE paying Jackson 50 million bucks when they wouldn't even talk about re-signing Moss who is 10 times the receiver. The entire idea is ridiculous.

I've been eharing for awhile that both will sign by week 10, because they need 10 games on the roster to accrue a year for FA, and at least in VJs case, that will put him over 6 years and into UFA territory. I'm not sure on Mankins.
makes sense to me. Moss may have a year left after this year at his very high level. jackson is just hitting his prime, so he probably has 4 years at a very high level of play. I personally hope Jackson sits out the full year in SD, and as a result still doesnt get paid.
I thought if someone was holding out after August 10th they lost the entire year of eligibility this year because it is the last year of the CBA. There was plenty of talk about that regarding Revis. That is different that the rule for pension payouts but important for anybody wanting to become a FA.
I've seen a lot of talk about this rumor, but I just don't see it happening. Belichek believes that Welker, Tate, Hernandez, and Edelman can get it done for the team. Even though he denies it, Moss was a distraction. Vjax would be an even bigger circus.
Do I really think he has four years left in him at a high level of play? Sure do. Do I hope he doesnt get paid? Yup. If guys like Brandon Marshall can exist in the NFL and play at a very high level with all the off field issues, which include being a malcontent in Denver, Jackson could suceed in New England. Or did you forget thats exactly how Moss left Oakland?
