I'm happy with the checkdowns. I didn't think Sanchez went to the check down "too early", I felt that he had one read in the passing game and if he didn't like what he saw he was getting the ball out of his hands. That is EXACTLY what I want him to do - especially against a defense like the one the Ravens have. We have playmakers on this offense and he needs to get the ball into their hands and let them do the work. I expect him to hold on to the ball a little bit longer knowing the Pats pass rush isn't as good as the one the Ravens have.
Well, they're sort of an issue when you can't muster more than 6 first downs. You gotta play to get past the sticks every now and then.
Did he not throw a deep pass that was caught by Keller? They throw the ball downfield (and did so a lot last year) but against the Ravens pass rush; the plan was probably to look at your first target and if it's covered get the ball out of your hands and check it down to Keller or Tomlinson. That's not a bad thing.
They only threw on 1st down 3 times (one was nullified by penalty) until the last drive. That's a large reason we didn't have more than 6 FDs. Poor execution didn't help either.
Check downs are fine when everybody is covered. They're bad when the check down receiver is your primary receiver. That's what got Chad run out of town (well, truthfully it was inadequate protection causing him to consistently check down a split-second before he had to), Clemens benched (same) and now has Sanchez in trouble. If the Jets are really planning to go that conservative they should be running a lot of screens and a real WCO. This hybrid crap is just useless.
Are you serious?! Take a fcknig shot down field for the love of god, why the fck draft a QB that high if he's going to check down all day, we had Chad Pennington, we already had captain checkdown... gimme a break.
I don't think the checkdown was his primary receiver. I think the idea was too look at a primary reciever then checkdown if that receiver was covered due to the Ravens pass rush. I don't remember ever seeing them checkdown like they did last night at all during last season. I'm fine with the idea because you get the ball out of Sanchez's hand quickly and into the hands of our playmakers.
Even on the last drive with under 2 to go and 1 timeout he was still checking down. Too much of anything is a bad thing, and like Bradway said, the checkdown was basically his primary target all night.
he was taking what the Ravens were giving him. The Ravens were rushing three and dropping 8 into coverage. Again, with 1:37 and 1 timeout left they had plenty of time to get into FG Range which should have been the goal at that point. There was no reason to push it down field into coverage on that drive.
Yes and no. I'd like to see some slant routes, timed out routes (like the one to Cotch) and other HIGH PERCENTAGE THROWS to WRs that made Sanchez look great in January. I don't get what the fuck is going on with the offense and their philosophy. It was very vaginal.
No reason to push it under two minutes left with 1 timeout? wtf? You can't get down the field at 3 yards a pop.
I saw no offensive philosophy on display last night at all. It's like the plays were randomly called with the biggest predictor being what happened on the previous play and very little risk-taking at all. We saw very little play action last night. The Ravens front 7 was dominant for much of the game and a huge part of that was the fact that the Jets were just dropping Sanchez back without play action, which allowed the linebackers to head straight for the dome or drop into short zones. The net result was a lot of pressure on Sanchez and very few routes open underneath. The Jets had one drive when they just ran-ran-ran into a three and out but other than that it was like nobody had a clue and in front of the Ravens front 7 not having a clue is a pretty harsh place to be.
Like we both said in the other thread, this was the worst part. Running a conservative gameplan and dumping the ball to Tomlinson on a lot of throws wasn't that bad, but doing it late in the 4th Quarter, especially during the 2 minute drill was too much.
The idea isn't to only get 3 yards. The idea is to get the ball out of Sanchez's hand and into our playmakers in space to get the ball down the field and get out of bounds. He took what the Ravens defense gave him. Did you want him to force it into coverage and have it picked off just so they can say they "pushed the ball downfield"? Come on now.
Why do you assume it would get picked off? This is the exact mentality that killed our offense yesterday. I'm not saying he had to launch it 30 yards down field but some nice quick slants or 10 yard ins/outs would have been good. At least then you're hitting a guy moving at full speed or towards the sideline. Those dump offs to the RB are generally eaten alive with so many people in coverage and a stationary target. They got us nothing all night, why would you expect them to get more with more people in coverage?
