Revis Signs and all is well in Jetland. Or maybe not. We still have some issues on offense. 3 glaring issues come to mind and although they've been pounded to death here like a 3 dollar steak, perhaps along with all this giddyness, a sobering thought or two might be in order. Sanchez 2.0 looks disturbing like Sanchez 1.0. He still locks on to his intended receiver and seems to still make almost as many bad throws as good ones. He has more weapons at his disposal but it won't matter if they don't get open or Sanchez doesn't get them the ball in a timely manner. Once again, I suspect you'll see stacked boxes and teams daring Sanchez to beat them so the question is, how many games can Sanchez win for us. Or the question could be, how many games will Sanchez not lose for us. Either way, this entire season now rests with #6 because at the end of the game, we still have to have more points than the other team no matter how great our D is. The OLine is weaker on the left side w/o Faneca. While Al wasn't the best, he's still better than Vlad the Impaler and/or Slauson. Another money move its looking like as the FO wanted to free up Al's cash to be used elsewhere just in case.. RB, we have Greene, we have LT and then it gets cloudy. With Washington and TRich gone, we really don't have alot of depth there. Either guy goes down for a time and our ground and pound will grind to a halt. We're thin here. I really don't count Woodhead in this as he's a bit smallish to move a pile or run inside. Perhaps a few more 2 TE sets is in the offing. Jmk? Not likely anytime soon. At WR's we will be set in week 5. Until then, we'll be ok as long as we don't depend on home runs to score points. Schotty had better stick with the ground & pound philosphy until Holmes gets back and even then, maybe keeping Sanchez on a short leash is the wisest course of action. Does anyone here really think that Sanchez can lite a team up purely using his passing skills? Not yet.. Well here's to a great 2010 season but forgive my cautious optimism. Seen too many feel good preseasons turn to shit by November.
They picked up a guard off the scrap heap yesterday. I don't really think Slauson is all that bad and you will never see Vlad on the field unless somebody gets hurt. Washington was out all year and Trich never ran the ball, I'm happier with what we have now. The defense is better, the offense is better. What's not to like?
1. I agree that Sanchez has not dramatically improved. However, if they stack the box it creates single coverage. Since his biggest issue is throwing into double coverage, I trust him to keep them honest as he can hit guys in single coverage. We're about where we were in the playoffs last year and did okay. 2. I don't agree with your premise that AF would have been better than Slausen. He had deteriorated skills and graded out to be the worst LG in the league in pass Protection. Everyone has seen the ONE play where Slausen nearly got Sanchez killed, and yes, one is one too many. But AF was doing the same and is only a year older. Overall I don't think Slausen gives us less than AF would have, and he should only get better. If it was Vlad I would worry but Slausen has done quite well. The big issue is them gelling...this should improve as the year goes on. 3. I share your concern about RB should Greene get hurt and wish Chauncy was on the roster. That said, he may be on the practice squad and if not, servicable RBs are a dime a dozen...esp. with a strong line. 4. WR...I agree. Except that if they stack the box Edwards Cotch and others can make them pay. Yes, Here's to a great season!
To speak the obvious, the jets O will go as far as Sanchez goes. He has looked bad in preseason (that's right, bad...not weak...not struggling...not disturbing...he's looked bad). The jets have ample talent on defense and the rest of the offense that even a Trent Dilfer QB effort would carry the jets deep into the playoffs. Speaking of offense-- for whatever it is worth I agree with cutting TRich as it was time, but I don't agree with cutting CWash over Woodhead--Woodhead bring nothing to special teams, and so what does he bring at all if he never plays?
My biggest concern is Schotty's play calling. For four seasons we've had a very high turnover prone offense. I know he's had 4 different quaterbacks but he is the only consistent piece. The ball control offense we ran in the playoffs will probably beat most teams but it won't beat the big passing teams.
I watched the Philly game yesterday on NFLN and tried to pay attention to Vlad's play. He got beaten continuously, they even used him in double teams with the center and he still got beaten like a drum. He is on the roster, but I will be surprised if he is active at all this season. They need to go ahead and abandon him at G and start training him to be our RT next season, he might be a little bit more comfortable out there since he has always been a OT.
I've never been the Schotty-hater that many are, but I totally understand the criticism. Am I the only one that found it interesting that Sanchez was calling the plays for both scoring drives vs. Philly in preseason?
Sanchez is the "weakest link" of this team. I love the guy and can't wait for him to develop into an elite QB, but our chances of actually making the SB are squarely on his shoulders. That's a lot of pressure for a 2nd year QB.
I think this team will go as far as Sanchez can take it. That is a lot to put on a young second year QB, but that's where I see it. He will have to win a few games. He still hasn't learned to look off defenders, but still throws into double coverage. Even on checks downs he throws directly into coverage. Outlet passes to a running back should never get intercepted. Everyone keeps talking about Slauson and Ducasse... how about how lousy Woody looked in preseason? Slauson hasn't been as bad as a lot of people make it out to be... one play where he got beaten and the defender went after Sanchez low. That is all anyone wants to remember, mostly thanks to Hard Knocks. I think Slauson's pass protection has been better than Woody's in the prseason. I'm not at all surprised we picked up an FA O lineman. That may not be soley because of the LG spot. Woody has to play better too. But it still boils down to Sanchez. We'll go as far as he can take us. I think a good place to start would be to stop drawing moustaches on family portraits in coach's offices. The screen saver thing was funny. The other stuff was a bit much, a bit immature. He has a ways to go yet.
Amen. Finally I can bring my sig back. The darksiders can shit on the offense tomorrow. Today is a good day.
It was pre-season...I'm going to hold out any critiques until I see a game or two where they have actually game planned for the team they are facing. At that point I'll see where the cerebral portion of Sanchez game has evolved to. I whole heartedly agree, though. This team's super bowl aspirations rides squarely on Sanchez right arm. Period. We will ground...we will pound...we'll be in the position to give up the fewest points in league history...the question is how many points we can put up. Peace! The Mezz
We're so fucked if our offense plays well on Monday. We will be totally out of shit to complain about. Somebody better get something on deck just in case. Does anybody have any pictures of the Flight Crew wearing unattractive clothing?
Not sure how anyone - after what amounts to basically 1.5 preseason games - can make a statement saying that Sanchez looked bad. There is no game specific planning, teams are forcing plays to players a bit to get a look, there was a lot of mix and match of player parts, etc. The three most important things for me to see with Mark was the ability to bounce back after a mistake, an improvement in his pocket presence and his decision making/ability to check down. For the most part has improved in all three areas over last year's play. The guy basically only played one + plus years at USC, came out as junior and played all last year. If he had stayed for his senior year, this would be his "rookie" NFL year. I think that people forget he is still young and enthusiastic and that BS about what you see in HKs is just that. Basically for the Jets to be successful this year, they need a 60% completion percentage, a 1-1 TD/INT ratio and about 3000+ yards from Sanchez. Those are realistic goals and would show continued improvement. I think also that the Sanchez you see in games 9-16 will be much better then the Sanchez you see in games 1-8.
OK for the final time. There is nothing wrong with Schotty play calling. It's execution by his players that are killing us. Eight fumbles (lost six) in 2 games, plus some ill advised interceptions by Sanches have nothing what's so ever to do with Schotty's play calling. When he is trying to mitigate Sanchez lack of experience you guys don't like his conservative calls. When he opens ups the play book Sanchez screws up so he gets critized as well. What gives? Put the blame where it belongs. Our key to stardom is Sanchez improving, not play calling.
