Did anyone hear Chris Carter talking about wide receivers yesterday? He was talking about a whole bunch of wide receivers and Wes Welker was named and he commented by saying he isnt a great wide receiver because he doesn't score touchdowns in the red zone.

Being a Jets Fan, I hate the Patriots, everything they stand for, and everyone on their team, but I will give credit where credit is due. Wes Welker is a great wide receiver and I cannot see how a pro bowl Wide Reciever like Chris Carter can disagree. He was so negative towards him it was unbelievable.

I really hope someone else heard this to comment on this.

Welker plays a specific role (slot WR) in the Pats' offense....and plays that role well (much to my chagrin)

Cris Carter is a fucktard that shouldn't be anywhere near a TV camera.

I heard it ... he said that Welker is not an elite receiver because he can't do it outside of the hashmarks.

    Maybe he's just jealous ...

I still don't understand why that idiot has a job on ESPN. The game has changed since he's played it.

The guy's tough as nails and he catches everything - he's a force over the middle.

Wes Welker is the best slot receiver in this league.

He is sort of right. Without Randy Moss, Welker is not that great. He is an amazing slot WR. He isn't a #1 WR. I can buy that.

^^ he was pretty good for us before Moss. Granted, not 100-catch good, but still effective.

He isn't a great WR, great WRs are threats from all over the field. Welker is great at what he does but he is an extension of the running game w/ all the short passes he catches. He's not a threat downfield, he's not a threat to score. He also gets the benefot of playing w/ an all-time great QB and w/ one of the all-time great WRs on the opposite side of him so he's not a focus of defenses. D's would much rather be dinked and unked w/ Welker than knocked out w/ Moss.

No one receiever frustrates me more than wes welker. He ALWAYS seems to be wide open. While i hate the guy (thats just cause hes on the patriots) i respect the hell out of him.

On another note... am i the only thats suspicious about his injury? I mean tearing an ACL is a serious injury. He tore it up early this year and he's already in game shape. Doesnt it take a year for full recovery?

it does ... that's why I think the Patriots cloned him before he was hurt, than killed the one that got hurt ... ALA the beginning of the movie The 6th Day

i'm kidding ... but it's crazy he looks and moves like he does

Welker is what he is. He's not Randy Moss or Anaquin Boldin, but no one's caught more passes over the last three years in the entire league. He's as good a possession/slot guy as you'll get. You'd think as an ex-player, Carter would understand that.

What does this downfield threat nonsense mean? That he cant score on a bomb streak or he cant get open 40 yards down the field. Because most wrs cant score on a bomb streak. Welker consistently makes 20 plus yard catches down the field because he is so nifty and great route runner.

I do not understand how a guy who avgs as much catches in a season as welker cannot be given respect.

Just because Welker is more successful in the slot doesnt make him a worse player. Most elite wrs cannot do what welker does in the slot nor do they want to do it.

If he was consistenly making 20 yd gains his yards per catch average wouldn't be under 11 yds for his career.

he catches short passes, has great hands and is quick. He's not a guy who defenses gameplan around, D's would much rather Welker "gashes" them for 9 recs and 95 yds than Moss for 6 recs and 150 yds w/ 2 TDs.

Welker is great at what he does but he's not a great WR, he's nowhere near guys like Moss(when healthy and trying), Johnson, Fitz, etc...

It's alot easier to find a Wes Welker than it is a Randy Moss.

Obviously Welker's not a big vertical threat like Moss or Fitzgerald, but that's not the only way to be a great receiver.

Welker is the best slot receiver in the NFL, and before his injury there was really no one close to him in that role. You're right that it's easier to find a good slot receiver, but it's certainly not easy to find one as good as Welker.

Or, to put it in terms that Pats fans would understand:

Tha fahcking Jets can nawt handle Wes Welkah! Welkah is tha best slot receivah in tha fahcking NFL, tha fahckin Dusty Pedroiah of football!

Welker has had one just 2 big games against us in his career(9 games). One we won and the other the Pats won.

When Welker was out in week 2 Edelman did everything Welker does, they didn't really miss him at all. Obviously he's excellent in his role but he's not one of the best WRs in the league. Best slot WR? sure but not in the discussion for best overall WR.
