    Jarron Gilbert -------- remember him?

Bears DL Jarron Gilbert and Henry Melton are both expected to "come under scrutiny when it's time for final roster cuts."
We know Gilbert can jump out of a swimming pool, but there are serious doubts about his ability to play football at the NFL level. Bears GM Jerry Angelo, squarely on the hot seat this year, picked up the defensive linemen with the two picks acquired after trading down from the 49th spot last year. They remain buried on the depth chart.

I put this in the draft forum because its more of a draft discussion, but its amazing how some guys seem to shoot up consensus boards right before the draft. Coincidently, they will also fall during the draft itself. I was one of those knuckleheads who was upset when the JETS selected Shonn Greene instead of Gilbert in the 3rd round. The year before, I couldn't believe it when we passed on the available Dre Moore. Looks like neither guy is working out. There are plenty of other examples but these are the ones I specifically remember.

I'm heading in the direction of "blind faith" in our scouting dept. + front office.

That caught my eye too. As fans, so much of what we base our opinions on are Youtube highlight packages. We don't have access to full game film, multiple angle views, coaches, scouts, background checks, interviews etc. so how can we form any kind of worthwhile opinion on a draft pick?

I'm not bashing anybody here because there are several of you who do a great job of analyzing the draft. My point is directed more at myself for thinking I am smarter and more informed that I really am.

If he does get cut, with Pitoitua out for the season, there's at least a chance we look at Gilbert.

I think we have enough in house to work with. The CS is really high on Kroul, I think Pettine all but guaranteed him a roster spot a few weeks/months ago. Steinkuhler is in his second TC with the team. Plus, we have also have Rodrique Wright and Gholston at DE now.

Rex did his workout right? I believe that was the main reason fans/followers thought we would take him...

Jarron Gilbert was the WAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2009. It wasn't like he came out of nowhere. I watched the guy consistently dominate that conference for a few seasons...some play styles just don't translate over to the NFL.

I thought he was going to be a solid player in the NFL, but not in a scheme like Chicago's. If he's cut, he'll get a spot somewhere else.

I think Wright and Kroul make it, but I wouldn't be surprised if Gilbert got a shot if he were cut soon. Of course, it probably won't happen soon enough for that.

The Bears may be a little hasty considering cutting Gilbert. This could be just the spin of Chicago writers.

I liked Gilbert but never considered him worth a round 1 investment. When the Jets moved up to the top of Round 3....two names came to mind....Gilbert & Greene. Greene was a better value.

Never got or understood the Gilbert hype so this isn't that much of a surprise.

I liked Gilbert. If he got cut I would to see what he could do in our scheme. Kroul is playing decent, but how tall is that man? And is Wright even getting any playing time?

Just checked Krouls size, he's 6'3 300. Great size. I'm surprised, he comes off as short to me. I guess that's a good thing though.

I understand the confusion with Kroul, he has sort of a weird build that makes him look a little shorter on camera.

As for Wright, he hasn't gotten too much playing time but that is likely to change now. If we brought in Gilbert, I don't think there would be any guarantee that he would jump everyone else on the depth chart.

Aaaah Jarron Gilbert. This one has always perplexed me. This board went crazy over this guy led by the self proclaimed "draft experts" like Mr. Ego. It doesn't really matter whether he is good or not, but the guys on here tried to convince everyone we should take him at #17 in the 1st round and that he was worthy of that pick. Ha Ha Ha.

I applaud the OP for admitting he was wrong about him but that's not the point I'm trying to make. We are all wrong at times. But to claim a guy should go mid 1st when the consensus (and reality) was he was a 3rd round guy was idiotic.

First ...let's not start crap with the "Mr Ego" stuff (your reference is pretty clear). I can't remember anyone, except Jabba wanting Gilbert at #17.

This board went a little overboard with the introduction of Gilbert by Jabba and the jumping out of the Pool stuff. Don't make it sound like all the "draft experts" went GAGA over Gilbert.....I wasn't in that group.

Gilbert played in 4 games last year with the Bears, so the jury is still out. Gilbert was an outstanding player in 2008....52 tackles, 22 TFL, and 9,5 sacks.

Jaron Gilbert was and still is a good prospect. He was always a better fit in the 34, than he was in the 43. I think his athleticism got him the noteriety, but as WW proved, his stats were pretty good too. I would love to see the Jets take a look at him.

I know for me that I buy into a lot of hype when it comes to 3-4 DEs.
I remain convinced that only certain physical specimens can effectively play 3-4 DE (tall, 295lbs+, very strong & extremely athletic - i.e. Richard Seymour mold).
Not to mention, the position has been a draft need for the JETS for quite some time --- we haven't really been addressing it other than a patch job for the past 4yrs.
So anytime a guy w/that size comes along w/the stats he had (52 tackles, 22 TFL, + 9.5 sacks), - all the planets are lined up.

    JARED CRICK in April 2011!

    It looks like Rex disagrees.

I guess we should start watching the wire once the first roster cuts roll in.
