OK, After attending last night game, I feel like the jets are holding back. I think that Rex Ryan is trying not to show what we really have until the regular season starts. He isnt using that great of plays, and we all Know that we have some great passing plays. I feel like The team wants people to think "This is not a Superbowl team" going into the regualr season, and then Bam, we will shine. I was watching ESPN and listening to the guys on there saying "If Jets have any intentions on going to the Superbowl, then they better step it up." Do you guys think that this is What we want? Think about it. After two games, we really havent seen Sanchez throw down field more than MAYBE 20 yards. Wehn you have Braylon, Cotch, and Holmes as your wide receiver corps, and Definitley in preaseason, then you should let your quarterback throw some bombs to see what happens... Kind of like Matt Moore did. All of our turnovers yesterday were on 2nd team. 1st team did a good job of not turning over the ball. Now some of you may think that I am stating the obvious when I say that we are not even going 60% Right now, But im trying to make you guys realize, we have little to nothing to worry about come regular season.
After watching the play of the last 2 games, it's obvious we aren't going full bore yet, but who is? It's preseason game 2.
The way the O line just basically fell over, was very unusual, and that does sound like something Rex would do. Im not worried at all. 3 drives doesnt make a season.
You don't get hurt or give away your playbook, the two main rules for preseason. Veterans with secure spots know its not worth it. Yes, the first team is holding back. The thing was, for last night, holding back could get your QB killed, so I really think that will be addressed by the coaches this week, and you will see a different performance next week.
Seriously? OF COURSE the Jets are holding back. Every team in the NFL holds back most of their playbook during the preseason. (I specifically remember Rex Ryan commenting on this after the Jets defense shoutout the Texans offense in the opener last year) For those of you who take the Pre-season extra seriously, keep in mind that teams don't even fully gameplan for their opponents until week 3 of the preseason (In fact, Bart Scott mentioned that in his sideline interview last night) This means the the teams aren't even fully versed on the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents (and how to best cope with them) until the third preseason game. Combine this with the miss-mosh of players either not playing or playing out of position, and it becomes increasingly difficult to learn much from preseason. Heck, there have been teams that have made the playoffs after going winless in the preseason. (In fact, the 1990 Bills went winless in the preseason and then proceeded to become a 13-3 juggernaut that ravaged through the league on the way to the superbowl and an upset loss to the Giants)
It's the Pre Season...everybody is holding back. There's no gameplanning, no play action double moves or reverses...hardly any blitzing on defense and certainly nothing complex. That's why I hardly put any stock into anything in August.
After watching many, many, years of the NFL, preseason games mean absolutly nothing. Do not base any conclutions on what you see until real football starts. Rex will givaway nothing of the playbook and then the Jets will shine. Allentown Ernie.
I'm pretty sure Rex wouldn't tell his O Line to purposely let Sanchez get hit... To answer the OP's question, obviously we are only using basic plays, but so is every other team. And do not listen to ESPN's opinion on this stuff they don't know what they are talking about. As much as coaches say things about winning, although they prefer it, preseason is really just for evaluating players and getting timing back.
True. The Jets did blitz a lot last night but I remember Ryan saying last year they don't gameplan for the opponent in the preseason, which is really his strong suit.
I heard Merril Hoge on ESPN, that dummy. He says the Jets better pick it up or else they're in trouble. Steelers HOMER! He was also killing the Cowboys offense too.
Holding back the playbook and holding in effort are two different things. I understand holding off with the playbook but if holding off effort-wise means Ferguson lets a guy walk through the line to sack Sanchez, then they need MAX EFFORT.
Oh I forgot to mention the 2000 Giants, who also went winless in the preseason and then went to the superbowl. That's two teams in the last 20 years (10 percent) who went 0-4 in the preseason and then made it to the game that the Jets haven't played in in 41 years.
Brick had a mental lapse on 1 play in preseason and we are killing him for it. It's preseason, get over it
I was thinking about this last night, and its probably the biggest reason our offense appears flat. The Jets arent running the ball nearly as much as they would in a regular game so they can keep Greene and LT fresh and healthy, while getting Sanchez and the WRs alot more reps as well. It throws off the balance of our offense and results in us throwing the ball in situations where we normally wouldnt. I can guarantee once the regular season comes around we run the ball alot more often and Sanchez will get more favorable match-ups when he takes it to the air.
I'm pretty sure Rex mentioned in a previous press conference...that you will be seeing a "vanilla" offensive game plan throughout the preseason....I wouldn't put up any red flags as of yet. I'm glad Schotty isn't showing his hand in a bunch of meaningless games.
I actually prefer they make mistakes early in the pre-season. The Jets' offense knows they played like shit, and they will work harder in practice this week to fix all the kinks. It's better they come out flat now than against Balt in week 1.
Yup. Don't put too much stock in to preseason game. They are basically there to determine which player would make the cut along with giving some practice to the starters.
