He's so good that he's the 4th running back and the 7th or 8th receiver on the depth chart. Nobody's denying that Woodhead brings skills to the table, or that he had a fantastic college career. But if he were a better player he'd be higher on the depth chart, simple as that. By the way, I love how everyone insists that combine stats don't mean dick when we're talking about Vernon Gholston, but all of the sudden Woodhead's 40 time makes him the second coming.
Hartsock is a walking penalty. He had the penalty that called back L.T.'s touchdown. He better get his shit together and not have another penalty heavy season.
I wouldn't necessarily call his season "penalty heavy", but he certainly made some costly mistakes that killed drives. Ben Hartsock is one of the best blocking tight ends in the league too. When he's on the field, it's almost like having an extra tackle out there. Does he make some boneheaded mistakes every now and then? Yes. Should we want him gone? Absolutely not.
No...but that's an apt comparison. There are two kinds of guys...those that make football plays, and those that don't Woodhead is the former, Gholston the latter... How much better player should he be at this point? He lost his rookie season to injury, and played last year.... And calling him the 7th or 8th receiver on the chart is misleading. He has a very defined role in that context, and out of the guys on the roster the one that fits it best outside of Woodhead is McKnight..(which will probably spell the end of Woodheads tenure...) Let's face it Outside of Edwards,Holmes,Cotchery,Coles (which is a 1 year thing) the rest of these guys (including Smith though his unique skill set makes other than a receiver) are JAGS....guys with intriguing speed, or size but zero production. And none of them seems to have that small thing that enables them to create space up close...(Welker, Chrebet etc...not fast guys...just guys with a knack) I put Woodhead above the JAG class...but agree with Ignatious, that at the end of the day no matter which way the F.O. goes...it's forgotten by the first kickoff.
For the once in a blue moon catch, I'd rather have an extra tackle...Hunter,Turner..he'll even Jumbo Elliot caught a pass from the TE position. Why waste the roster spot?
Who the hell else is going to back up Dustin Keller? Ben Hartsock is the best blocking tight end on our roster and it's not even close. It should be fairly obvious that Hartsock is quicker and more agile than someone like Hunter or Turner. He has more ability to take on linebackers and in-the-box safeties. It's not Hartsock's job to catch passes. He comes on the field to hit people.
its not likely but possible that coles could be cut and we give the final wr spot to woodhead until holmes comes back
I'd like to see them bring along a guy that can actually catch AND block. I was irked when Baker left.
Yup....At some point the community of GMs being as small as it is...these guys are going to find their clients getting shut out of opportunities.... Be nice if Mr T. was the one to bring them down a couple notches.
