He was signed to a 3 year deal in 09 so 2011 is the last year of it. Also 2011 is an option year so the Raiders could decline to pick that option up and just move on
Champ - an anomaly does not set a bench mark, and this is clearly an anomaly. Revis can say it's the benchmark all he wants, but unless someone is willing to recognize that as the benchmark he is wrong. Clearly, the only GM that is allowed to deal with him does not agree or it would be a done deal.
Well 09 and 10 are for 28.75 million combined fully guaranteed and in 2011 if they want him they're probably gonna have to pay the franchise number for QB's because Manning and Brady might get new deals by then

This is just misinformation that somebody is spreading to cloud the process. The franchise tag number for cornerbacks in 2008 was 9.65 million. That's the number Aso would have had to play for if Al Davis just flatout franchised him that year. In fact Aso WAS franchised for 9.65 million in 2008 before the Raiders and he agreed to the deal in early 2009. To keep him for 2009 the Raiders would have had to pay 20% more or 11.58 million. To keep him for 2010 the number would have been 13.9 million. To keep him for 2011 the Raiders would have spent 16.67 million. For whatever reason the Raiders chose to pay him an extra 3 million over the cost of franchising him over that three year period AND to guarantee the first 2 seasons salary and guarantee the third season if Aso played for them in 2010. The total cost of keeping Aso as a franchise player would have been 42.15 million. The Raiders chose instead to give him 45.3 million AND guarantee the money in most of the deal. That's the deal breaker. The contract they gave Aso was for an extra 7% over the highest possible cost of retaining him otherwise and it was mostly guaranteed.

Yeah, they were essentially banking on Aso not wanting to play for them during that period. If they hadn't reached that deal, the 2011 number would have accelerated to 2010, since that would have been his 3rd year under the franchise tag. Under the expiring CBA, a player in his 3rd year under the franchise tag receives the greatest of: 1) The average of the 5 highest QB salaries from the previous season 2) 120% of the average of the 5 highest salaries at his position 3) 144% of his own salary They pushed the number back to 2011, and paid him more in the meantime for the right to do so. It was absolutely idiotic, a desperation move just to keep him for one extra season. EDIT: Actually, had they not made that deal, and chose to franchise him for 3 years straight, his number this year would have been $19.42 million according to the NFL Salary Database. That number seems high to me, though, as I thought the franchise number was around $14 - 15 million this year.
Thanks but as WSW has said many times Revis wants $0.50 more then Aso so at least in Revises head Aso contract is the B/mark & that is what the NYJs & Revis have to overcome otherwise everybody is just spinning wheels & going nowhere. As the Skins GM said yesterday IF Wilson pans out then Revis will have zero leverage but if after several regular season games if it becomes apparent that Revis is needed then the NYJs will have no choice but ante up the Aso type money

I don't think it obvious that a player attempting to get paid what he thinks he is worth is by definition not a team player. This is a business AND a sport. The sport side of things does not require a player to play for less than he is worth. How come it's still a sport when the owners charge top dollar for tickets, concessions, parking, merchandise, the league sells broadcast rights which tv covers with ads, etc... But when a player seeks a better contract, he sucks. Sure. Now that doesn't mean I agree in this case with the player's assessment of his worth. But there's nothing obvious about the connection between what Revis is doing and whether or not he is a team player. And the Jets will be better off if they can reach a reasonable deal and play Revis than to have him sit. I know Jet fans will be, too.
After last nights hard knocks show I am 100% sure Revis will be singed before the last pre-season game this whole thing is turning into a soap opera but Revis star power is just not strong enough YET to justify such a huge contract. The more airtime this gets the more popular Revis gets at this point $160 million for ten years $60 milion garunteed is what it will take. The FO knows this and will work this out in a way that Revis salary could fluxuate over the life of the guaranteed money that his pay would escalate based on perfomance to be paid as the top CB in the NFL if he plays up to that ability we get compensation he gets compensation. He's 24 how long can he perform at that high of a level as the best cb in the league before some other kid takes the role?
10 years 160 million gets it done today, the problem is that's an absurd number for a CB no matter how good he is.
Its simple... when you're discussing an NFL player trying to get himself the best contract possible with a bunch of people who would play in the NFL for free and have fantasies about what they'd do with 1 million dollars... much less 120/160 million dollars, obviously there are many who are going to rail against that player with the flatly simple logic of "hey wtf 120m is good jus take it and play!". Just remember that whatever Revis gets paid whether it be 120 or 160 or somewhere in between at the end of the day the Jets and specifically Woody Johnson are going to make a profit that makes Revis money look like childs play. Its a business, the Jets are trying their best to optimize their profit, and so is Revis. Both sides are doing the exact same thing. Fans don't want to hear about it... they just want to see their team win. This is why everyone will be right back on the bandwagon if and when he signs a new deal and gets back to the team.
I'd give him 60 million guaranteed over 10 years if they would agree to structure the rest in a way that he will have to really work to get over 10 million per season.
