After 15 seasons, veteran defensive back Aaron Glenn finally is calling it quits. On Wednesday, he'll sign a one-day contract with one of the various teams with which he played.

He'll retire with the Texans. The team made the announcement earlier this evening.

Glenn has picked the Texans even though he spent only three seasons with the team. In contrast, he was a member of the Jets for eight years. He also spent two seasons with the Cowboys, one with the Jaguars, and one with the Saints. Glenn last played in 2008, landing on injured reserve in late November.

Picked 12th overall by the Pete Carroll-coached Jets in 1994, Glenn was a member of the first Texans team in 2002. He qualified for the Pro Bowl that year, for the third and final time of his career.

That's not all that surprising. Bradway and Herm fucked him out of a great contract in the expansion draft. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he felt more loved in Houston.

That's a bummer he isn't retiring as a Jet, but he's from Texas.

Although I understand his reasoning after being uncermoniously exposed in that year's expansion draft, as one of my favorites of all time, something doesn't feel quite right about this.

Thats a shame. Easily one of my favorite jets of all time. Shoulda signed a 1 day contract with us, then he could at least say he was a member of the jets squad that finally brought a championship home again.

The Jets kind of booted him out of town pretty suddenly, not surprising that he would do this with the Texans. He is a native Texan and they were kind enough to take him and that monster contract, that'd be good enough for me.

The Texans probably paid him something to do so. He'd be their first notable player to retire.

Yes, that would be the point of the second sentence.

I concur, that second sentence did take care of that, my apologies.

Big deal we will get Jason Taylor to retire as a Jet in his place.

The Jets lost three starters in yesterday's expansion draft for the Houston Texans, but they gained something that may be even more valuable: salary-cap flexibility.

They will need it because they have to replace their starting cornerbacks, Aaron Glenn and Marcus Coleman. Right tackle Ryan Young was the second player selected by the Texans.

The Texans, who took 19 players, chose the Jacksonville offensive tackle Tony Boselli with the first pick, and the three Jets were selected among the first seven picks. The Jets, who began the day $20 million over the salary cap, shaved $14 million off their books. Another big savings will come on March 1, when a clause in quarterback Vinny Testaverde's contract drops his salary-cap figure by $8.5 million.

Jacksonville was the only other team to lose three players; defensive tackles Seth Payne and Gary Walker were selected along with Boselli, who was the first player chosen by the expansion Jaguars in the 1995 draft and became a dominant lineman.

The Baltimore Ravens lost two players, Jamie Sharper, a starting linebacker, and Jermaine Lewis, one of the league's best kick returners. The Texans picked quarterback Danny Wuerffel of the Chicago Bears with their 17th choice.

The first eight choices came from the Jets, Jacksonville and Baltimore. The Giants did not lose any players off a list that included linebacker Jessie Armstead and defensive lineman Kenny Holmes.

''This provides us with a unique opportunity to relieve ourselves from some salary-cap issues we had,'' Jets General Manager Terry Bradway said. ''We lost three guys that helped us win 10 games. The challenge becomes getting players that can maybe help us win 11, or 12.''

The presence on the list of Young, whose cap number was only $563,000, raised speculation that Bradway and the Texans' director of football operations, Charley Casserly, had a gentlemen's agreement that the Texans would agree to take Glenn and Coleman, and their high salaries, if the Jets would add Young to the expansion list.

Bradway said he and Casserly had numerous conversations before the draft, but he tiptoed around whether there was a deal. Bradway said the Jets would not have been able to keep their offensive line intact because Jason Fabini and Kerry Jenkins are free agents this year, and Kevin Mawae and Randy Thomas are free agents next year. The Jets want to keep all of them. Something had to give, and it was Young, especially because the Jets drafted tackle Kareem McKenzie in the third round last year. He is expected to start next season.

It is not clear who will replace Glenn and Coleman. The Jets finished the season ranked seventh in the league in pass defense, but neither player was a particular favorite of Coach Herman Edwards. Glenn is a strong cover corner but is relatively small and is not a great tackler, two qualities Edwards's preferred zone defense demands. Coleman is more of the physical prototype Edwards prefers, but he struggled this season and annoyed the Jets when he was late to several meetings.

The Jets want to keep nickelback Ray Mickens, and will renegotiate his contract because he is owed a $2 million bonus on March 1. And the Jets drafted Jamie Henderson last year. But Edwards would not commit to either of them as starters. The Jets will pursue a veteran free-agent cornerback. Edwards is likely to pursue two familiar faces: Donnie Abraham and Brian Kelly of Tampa Bay, where Edwards was formerly the assistant head coach. The Jets may also draft a cornerback in April.

''We went into Tampa with the same thing, we had some older corners,'' Edwards, a former cornerback, said. ''I've been down this road before. I'm not a guy to panic and I'm not going to panic now.''

The only two Jets not selected by the Texans were the safety and special-teams player Chris Hayes and defensive tackle Shane Burton. The Jets said they want them back, but that seems unlikely, especially in Hayes's case. He was supposed to be the starting free safety last season, but lost the job when the Jets signed Damien Robinson. Hayes will probably ask to be released. The Jets want to keep the rest of their defensive backs (Robinson and strong safety Victor Green), but each is due a large bonus, and their contracts will have to be renegotiated by March 1. The Jets will be busy until then.

The Jets' contract negotiator, Mike Tannenbaum, will try to work out a contract for Fabini before Thursday afternoon. If he cannot, the Jets will tag Fabini as a transition player, meaning he would have to be paid $4.4 million, unless a new contract can be worked out afterward.

    EXTRA POINTS

Jets Coach HERMAN EDWARDS will receive a new contract that is likely to add money and years to his original deal, which is for four years at about $1 million per year. . . . JUMBO ELLIOTT, who worked as an assistant offensive line coach last season, has told the team he wants to come out of retirement. . . . The Jets want linebacker General Manager MARVIN JONES back, but TERRY BRADWAY is not sure a deal to rework his contract can be done by March 1.

No they didn't. We were left w/ an awful cap situation after BP left and we got lucky w/ the expansion draft that we could wipe off Glenn's and Marcus Coleman's salaries. Aaron WANTED to go home and play for the texans, he was happy w/ the way it all worked out and I don't believe he had any ill will towards the Jets. We made out like bandits in that deal, we got cap flexibility and made moves to win only our 2nd ever AFC East Title and we slid Kareem McKenzie to RT in place of Young.

Aaron Glenn was a good corner, he is very overrated by Jet fans. He would always get roasted by the top guys and we made our run in 1998 w/ Aaron hurt and Ray Mickens starting in his place.
