Dickey is being pulled? Unless he's hurt (of which there is no evidence), this doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Apparently he had his chest and back wrapped in ice before the game, and winced on a swing in an at bat in the 5th inning, so the speculation is that he has some kind of core muscle issue. He's been playing great, so losing him would definitely be a blow.
The argument, no doubt, is as Gary mentioned - that this will give Rodriguez some work, since he hadn't pitched since Friday. I'd be more impressed with that argument if he didn't pitch like he is pitching tonight every night - lots of pitches, at least a baserunner or two, etc. Barring a major collapse it won't really hurt the team (although it cost Dickey a chance at a complete game), but it's just another example of how Manuel just can't help getting in his own way. Baseball is complicated enough - you don't have to make it harder for yourself. Game over. Dickey the first Met pitcher to go 6-0 in his first 7 starts as a Met.
Pagan says it was a muscle spasm, and "is not a DL thing," but he'll probably be out a couple of days.
As suspected, Manuel took Dickey out because he wanted to give Rodriguez work. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/gametracker/recap/MLB_20100623_DET@NYM See, now that's a great argument, except for one thing - it's complete, utter, crap. Here are Frankie's splits in 2010 based on the number of days of rest that he has had (strikeout to walk ratio, BA against, OBP against, SLG against, WHIP, strikeouts per 9 IP; this doesn't include tonight's game): 0 Days: 1.83 K/BB .211 BAA .333 OBPA .342 SLGA 1.313 WHIP 9.3 K/9 1 Day : 8.50 K/BB .273 BAA .298 OBPA .318 SLGA 1.235 WHIP 13.5 K/9 2 Days: 5.00 K/BB .250 BAA .300 OBPA .536 SLGA 1.286 WHIP 12.9 K/9 3 Days: 2.67 K/BB .053 BAA .217 OBPA .105 SLGA 0.667 WHIP 12.0 K/9 6+ Days: -- K/BB .000 BAA .000 OBPA .000 SLGA 0.000 WHIP 0.0 K/9 Each of these are based on at least 23 plate appearances against except the 6+ days; that's only based on a single outing, but it was a 1-2-3 inning, so it hardly supports Manuel's claim that Rodriguez pitches worse with more rest. If you look at the other splits, it's obvious that there is no evidence to suggest that when he gets regular work he is any more effective. The truth is what I've been saying repeatedly, which is that pretty much every game, no matter what, he gives up at least a baserunner or two, often to a crappy hitter. I didn't need to go to Baseball Reference to know this; it was obvious just by watching the games. This is what drives me bonkers about Manuel - how can he not know this, when it is blindingly obvious? Why doesn't he pay even the slightest attention to the simplest of statistics, to see that his impressions are just wrong? This entire incident shows why the W-L record of a team is a terrible way to evaluate a manager - on a night where the team played a just about perfect game, we see that Manuel is incapable of handling even the simplest of managerial tasks. That doesn't matter on a night like tonight, but it will on other nights, and on those nights the Mets will come up short because their manager is an idiot.
:rofl2: It's a thing of beauty to watch you do that voodoo you do so well. Fire Jerry. Before someone else hires Bobby V.
Thanks for the thumbs up. Unfortunately, there seems to be considerable buzz that the Marlins are going to bring him in, at least for a talk. Once he decided to look back across the Pacific, you had to figure that sooner or later some GM would have the guts to hire him, even though he isn't quite as circumspect as they would like. The success of the Mets this year unfortunately means that Minaya and Manuel probably aren't going anywhere until at least the end of the season, and by then it could easily be too late to get Bobby.
In first place on June 24th? Okay, who had that? Note, btw, that if the Mets win tonight, not only are they leading the NL East, they're tied for best record in the NL.
I heard yesterday on WFAN that it's considered a lock for Bobby V to go to Florida. He even turned down an interview with Baltimore, which indicates he's on the verge of taking the Florida job.
Why have Feliciano batting second? Just because he's playing center, that doesn't mean he has to take Pagan's spot in the batting order.
Also, with all the David Wright hate, who would have figured he's leading the NL in RBI? Also, Remember in the first few series threads of the year, I said not to count the Mets out, and I also said that if the Mets were at least within 3 games when Beltran came back they'd be in good shape? Thank you.
eh, a nice come from behind victory would be a nice change of pace for how well they have been playing.
