Ah I guess its disheartening cause you want players that their heart and soul are with the team and unfortunately its all about the money. I would accept the offer but a business and a football team are 2 completely different things in my book. Id do anything for my teammates and theyd do the same for me, its like a brotherhood and to me the difference from 15-17 million dollars wouldnt be worth it to leave my teammates in the dirt.
sure he does... just not as much as the Jets do. He is considered the best at his position and no matter how you look at it is currently way under paid. The Jets want to win not only this year but for years to come and Revis is a big part of those plans. It is in the Jets best interest to get Revis locked up for a long time because player contracts are not going to get smaller in the next few years no matter how much the owners may want that to happen. If they can get him locked up for 12-13 million a year that will look like a bargain by the end of his contract.
http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5272841 FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Next week's mandatory minicamp? Check. Darrelle Revis said he's planning to attend even though he's not happy with his current contract. Beyond next week is a different story, as the New York Jets' star cornerback didn't rule out the possibility of a training camp holdout. Revis, commenting Thursday for the first time since his one-day boycott of voluntary practices last week, also spoke cryptically about his plans if he still doesn't have a new contract by the start of the regular season. More From ESPNNewYork.com In a cutthroat sport that sees aging stars and injured players cut loose, Darrelle Revis should get what he can from the Jets, writes Ian O'Connor. Story • Check out the Yankees blog "You'll know. It's not going to be hidden," he told reporters after practice. "... If things are not the right way, I need to sit back and view my career and see where I need to go from here." By then, his options would be to request a trade or sit out the season, which is highly unlikely. The easygoing Revis insisted he's not angry about the seemingly slow pace of negotiations, but there was a noticeable edge in his tone. He remained adamant about wanting to become the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, overtaking Nnamdi Asomugha ($15.1 million per year) of the Oakland Raiders. Revis revealed that he has received an improved offer from the Jets, but it was rejected because he's "still not comfortable" with the total package. According to a league source, the Jets' initial offer included no guaranteed money, prompting him to skip practice last week. Revis is believed to be seeking in excess of $16 million per year, comparable to Asomugha's average for 2010 and 2011. Asked if he's hell-bent on becoming the highest-paid corner, Revis replied, "Why wouldn't I?" The Jets, he said, promised him a new deal as soon as last season ended. Interestingly, there's language in Revis' current contract that could hurt his leverage. If he stages a training camp holdout, he would void $20 million in guarantees -- the combined total of his 2011 and 2012 salaries. He wouldn't forfeit the salary, just the guarantee -- a huge risk. Revis said he'd have to decide whether "to let that money go and fight for something bigger or play it safe and go to camp." He's due to make $1 million this season, the fourth year of a six-year contract. Technically, the deal voids after the season, but the Jets will buy back the last two seasons for $5 million and $15 million, respectively. Some believe the Jets are stalling because owner Woody Johnson has tightened the purse strings amid labor uncertainty in the NFL. That, too, has crossed Revis' mind. "Not just us, but a lot of teams might be cheap this year because they don't know what's going to happen in the future with a lockout or not," he said. Revis all but challenged the front office to re-sign the "Core Four" of veterans, which includes center Nick Mangold, linebacker David Harris and left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson. Mangold, upset with his negotiations, said Thursday there's a "50-50 chance" he will skip the minicamp. "The Jets need to pay their guys," Revis said. "There's a lot of us in line right now. ... It's up to them to choose who they want to pay and who they don't want to pay." The front office has budgeted enough money to sign all four players to long-term contracts, according to league sources. But having a budget and executing the deals are two different things. In the meantime, coach Rex Ryan continued to rave about Revis, claiming he could have a Joe Namath-type impact on the franchise. Yes, he really said that, providing more ammo for Revis' agents. "He's going to be a Jet forever," Ryan said. "If he's here long enough, which I anticipate he will be, will he go down as the best football player in New York Jets history? He's going to go down as one of them. I know about Joe Namath and all that, but this guy has that kind of ability." GM Mike Tannenbaum must cringe every time Ryan opens his mouth. There was an un-Revis-like moment in Thursday's practice, when he was beaten deep by Jerricho Cotchery -- a rare occurrence. Coaches and players seemed almost stunned, and Revis was fuming -- testimony to his competitiveness. "You could see the steam coming off his helmet," Ryan said. If the negotiations continue to drag, the Jets will see a lot of steam from Revis. Rich Cimini covers the Jets for ESPNNewYork.com. Follow him on Twitter. Revis beat by Cotchery?????????????????????
I would take that. Or a couple of first rounders. Or stoping negociations and keeping the 3 year contract as is (quickly giving nice extensions to Mangold and DBrick, so it's pretty clear that not extending Revis' was not because the org don't care for the players, but because Revis was just doing a tantrum). Actually, the only thing I wouldn't like in this moment is giving him a 14+ million per year extension. Not now. The team has lots of (good) options, I'm not really worried about it; Revis is the one making me unconfortable with the situation because I like him and I hate to watch him acting like a moron and I would hate to lose him (either virtually or actually) because he's not smart enough to understand the situation...
Fuck it Tanny/Woody. Just look like dopes, and bow down to Revis. Give him a ridiculous signing bonus, so it doesn't affect the cap in the future. You guys will look like pussies, but who gives a shit.
Agree. But we won't see the end of his contract. If you lock him up for 12 million a year (or 16, or 20) he'll want a new deal when the contract looks like a bargain again (which we know will happen). I have no problem with that. But he can't honestly demand to be paid more than Aso right now. And if it's just a pose in order to negociate... that's where I don't understand Revis, because he still have a 3 year/21 million contract. It should be in his best interest to take a smooth aproach this time and keep the talks in the nicest of ways.
If he plays this year without a new contract and plays angry, then Wilson and Cromartie play well, I think you could see him get traded next summer, as crazy as that sounds. I think both sides are playing hardball and I hope it will get done, but at the end of the day, I can't see how you can let a CB totally fuck your cap, especially when you don't even know what the cap will look like. I wonder how big of a drop we'd see starting Wilson/Cromartie in a year's time versus Revis? The other side is he's a generational talent...argh.
One thing that pisses me off is that players always want new contracts before their current contract is up. Shut your mouth play ball and ask for the $ when your contract is up. If your unhappy you should of thought of this before you signed the contract in the first place. Its ridiculous how players can hold out mid contract because there unhappy with the money.
Jerrico Cotchery is one of the best receivers the Jets have had in a long time. I rank him above Keyshawn, Coles and Chrebet in terms of the value he brings to the offense. Probably the last receiver the Jets had who was better was Al Toon.
I think I am going to wait a few months before I pour gasoline on myself and panic. Both sides are full of shit at this point................
in any other sport you have a point but it is equally ridiculous that the second a player gets hurt a team can terminate that contract because they aren't happy paying the money.
I agree when it's a veteran who was able to negotiate a contract with no restrictions. Like for example, Andre Johnson is looking for a new contract this offseason. 2 years ago he just signed a new mega-contract which was the highest at the time. Now he has become arguably the best WR in the league and wants a new bigger contract. That is crap. The difference between that and Revis or Chris Johnson is that these guys had no choice what they were able to sign for. They were rookies and had to pretty much sign for whatever their slot gets. They both have seriously outperformed those rookie contracts and want to get paid fair market value. I really don't blame them. Compared to what they have produced, their salaries are garbage.
the Jets should tell him if he wants to be the highest paid corner, they are going to have to lock up the other guys first so they know how those contracts are structured and how they can navigate them with a new CBA. so, high paid is this year or highest paid next year. it's up to him.
Revis can go screw himself. We don't need him if he's going to cause problems. Kyle Wilson will replace this loser. And no other team is going to pay the money so this idiot needs to realize the Jets will offer him the best contract, but it won't be the highest for a CB. And personally, get rid of him and dont let the door hit you to hard on the way out, *****
I love Revis but hes had 1 good year and 1 amazing year. Im sure he will be great this year but its tough to repeat what he did last year. And yea he didnt win defensive player of the year which was won by another corner so stop your bitching take your absurd amount of money and forget about the other 1 or 2 million you could squeeze out of it.
Big whoop, its obviously an unpopular choice but lets face it, if we give him this contract then our team is pretty much screwed. We would be better off without Revis than with him. Obviously in a perfect world, we get Revis and everyone else gets their contracts also but we don't live in a perfect world and someone is going to have to go. It might be time to vote Revis, off the Island.
I know its long...but read this: http://www.thejetsblog.com/2010/05/09/salary-cap-update-can-the-jets-extend-everybody/ I think you need to educate yourself a little bit on cap info before jumping to the conclusion that the team is "screwed" if we sign Revis
Revis is starting to turn me off. Real fucking teammate this guy. Wanting to handicap the team with wanting a ridiculous deal. Selfish.
