http://web.sny.tv/media/video.jsp?content_id=8686603&topic_id=6479520 After watching this new interview and watching the new 2009 Best Games DVD, I am starting to feel like Sanchez, not Revis or Mangold or Jenkins or anyone else will be the Jets best player for many years to come. Sanchez showed sparks in Week 2 vs. the Patriots and looked great for a rookie QB in the Playoffs. Pretty amazing that his best game was the AFC Championship. Maybe this is not threadworthy, but I just got the feeling today finally, that Sanchez is going to be great. I mean really great. Pro Bowler, Super Bowl MVP, possibly League MVP in the not so distant future. Anyone else starting to feel this way??
I think he will be a great QB, but not in the 'elite' conversation. but with a dominate defense who needs an elite QB?
I think so. He didn't get full of himself like a lot of players. Most call it the second year slump. I think it's guys thinking they don't need to work hard anymore. Sanchez working hard from what I read.
I got goosebumps during the last line of that video: "We were this close to making it to the Super Bowl... and I wasn't even good yet."
Haha yeah great line. Also, think about his knee surgery so hopefully that won't be a problem for him in 2010 and beyond.
I think (and everyone will call me biased) that Sanchez can be every bit as good as Philip Rivers or Aaron Rodgers. If those two guys are elite then Sanchez can definitely enter that territory.
When he said "we were this close" I think he put his fingers together the distance away Drew Coleman was from tipping that Manning pass.
Will he be Peyton Manning or Tom Brady great? Probably not. I can see him being a top 5-10 QB in a year or two though. It's too hard to predict anything after that, since we only saw his rookie season so far.
Without a doubt he has the physical toolset to play on the level of a Rivers or Rodgers. For me, the game that showcased his abilities most was Week 1, at Houston. If you haven't seen it or don't remember, go back and watch. I think the hype of our 3-0 start and then quick mid-season decline got to his head, and it began showing up on film. Week 1 he had nothing to lose. He was a rookie playing in his first game, and no was going to hold him accountable, regardless of the outcome. Likewise, the pressure was not too great vs the Pats and 0-2 Titans. However, as soon as the media chimed in on the quick start, then interceptions he was throwing in NO, then vs BUF, you started to see him hesitate in his decision making, or just simply rush his throws. If he can relax, and *go through his reads*, he will be our starter for the next 15 years. And I'm confident he will be. EDIT: Forgot about this...
Why would a guy who's awful midseason almost cost the team a playoff birth be full of himself? The Jets didn't ride Sanchez to the AFC chamionship game. He rode the D and running game there, and started making good decisions. I think he'll be a much better QB this season because of his work ethic, but I really don't see him as an all-time elite QB, but only time will tell on that. I think he'll be more than good enough to manage this team deep into the playoffs and a possible SB as long as they have this defense and a solid running game.
If he reaches their level he'll do it in a different way. He'll do it in the Montana style. Smart decisions, accuracy, and timing. Because he doesn't have near the arm of those two. Most QB's don't.
I think Sanchez has the tools and potential to be elite. What excites me is the amount of work he's been putting in with film/coaches and rehab during his knee surgery. The playoffs finally showed the game falling into his hands and making confident but comfortable throws, not forcing it into windows and creating picks. Once Sanchez finishes his career, I think he'll be remembered as great. Hall of Fame, probably not (depends on success of team) but definitely a pro-bowler a few times over.
I actually agree with a Pats fan, the thing though is unlike Manning or (I won't say Brady because they had a very good D early in his career) or Warner where the team needed them to be elite to win games. If Sanchez can be Big Ben good or even McNabb good this team will win games when it counts because the D is too good to lose them that often. I'd say he's a step above Dilfer because he can make plays and seems to have a good head although it's hard to compare this D to that one. They were in 85/86 Bears territory.
If his knees hold up he'll be very good. Greatness is going to be determined by how he does in the playoffs and whether or not the Jets win some Super Bowls with him. Watching that Houston vid above what I got out of it was that Sanchez could have had 4 or 5 picks in that game if everything went poorly but the Texans had the dropsies. Also Jerrico Cotchery is just a damn good receiver and when he catches the ball only half the story has been written on the play.
I love hearing about his work ethic and he showed a lot of good things last year, but I want him to show us a solid "good" year before I start to feel he's going to be great.
He'll be better than Rivers because he isn't a whiny bitch and actually knows how to lead his team.:jets:
