This is my take on it: note.. speculation is involved. Mike T and co. 'lowballed' Revis and his agent an offer. Something in the realm of 12 mil/year for 7-8 years, the catch being A LOT of guaranteed money up front and the rest incentive based. Revis wants Nnamdi money + a mil or two, say 17-18 mil a season for 6 years. Agent reviews offer made last week and holds out a bit to see if Jets throw more money on the table after showing no interest. Tanny doesn't budge, so Revis gets upset and decides to hold out of practice and potentially mandatory camp as a leverage tool. Is he really 'furious' and untrustworthy of our front office? Maybe, but not to a great extent. Saw what happened to Leon last season so he's pushing all his chips in to get a monster deal done NOW rather than next season fearing a debilitating injury that cheapens his salary. Now, Tanny and crew notice that the fun and games are over and it's time to lock up this guy. Only problem is, it has to be done in a reasonable fashion as to not hurt the pending salaries of Mangold, Brick, and Harris (also Cromartie, Holmes, B-Edwards etc). In the end, I'm confident they'll work something out. I feel like Revis wants to be here but isn't getting the coin he deserves, especially considering Rex's praise for him throughout the year. That's where I feel the lying comes in to play. Darrelle can quote the coaching staff in saying '' he's the best corner in football '' many times over and how he is a cornerstone of the #1 defense. I'm sure he was told he'd be paid as such too, in this case slightly higher than Asomugha. Now the numbers he's seeing from the Jets aren't matching his expectations. P.S. Fuck you Al Davis.
That part pretty much sums up everything that is wrong with this situation. It's getting annoying hearing these phrases coming from at least one pending FA every minicamp/training camp season, but Revis should be realizing that Asomugha getting that contract was the product of two horrible decisions. We know how Tannenbaum's negotiations operate because we have read about all of them on this website and Revis knows how they work because he has been through them personally. Everything we hear from now until the deal is signed should be considered nothing more than a negotiating tactic.
In my view it is utterly ludicrous that after so many years as a cap guy then GM, Tannenbaum still can't work out how to open negotiations without angering a player. I'm not saying give him what he wants without discussion or reason, but c'mon. He has to be smarter.
Bare in mind who his agent is. We've seen this pattern coming from Baker and Kendall who were also represented by the same guy. Cotchery and Rhodes got their deals without the word "holdout" being tossed around. Revis is the best player at his position and in that situation, these things aren't resolved easily.
it all comes down to what revis thinks he's worth. And if he thinks 7 years at 12 mill is a lowball offer then he's lost his damn mind
Its all part of the negotiating game. gm makes offer, player gets 'angry' at offer, then the gm ups the offer. I think people are being way to sensitive here.
Are you kidding me? Seriously? When in doubt panic and then make a rush to judgment. Isn't that like the 3rd. or 4th amendment of the constitution?
The Jag-off will sign anybody. He obviously is fucked up in the head, and somebody should of stopped him from signing Asomugha.
If this was any other year, I think more progress would have been made by this point. But with the uncertainty of the new CBA negotiations are gonna take a while.
How is anybody supposed to get new contracts when nobody knows for sure what the new CBA will be, or if Football will be played?
Too bad in a uncapped year we can't sign him with the presumption that there will be no cap. When a salary cap is decided there could be some clause to grandfather this in.
There's no room for emotion at the negotiating table. Just as an agent can throw a ridiculous high offer out of thin air..the "Buyer" can start off ridiculously low. This is common practice. Tannenbaum has done absolutely nothing wrong.
Tanny has to consider the whole team, if we tie up 18 million in a CB that really limits what we can do in other areas. A contract this size at a position like this could end up really hurting us in the long run. If you think about his impact, yeah it's huge. When you break it down he's basically taking 1 player out of the game, so instead of 11 on 11 it's 10 on 10. I realize his does more but that's the basis of his greatness. Is that worth losing other current players or the chance to sign others down the road? Look at the Pats, a perennial contender. Brady is making 8 million and Moss 6, the rest of the team is 5 million or way under. Look at the Colts, Peyton makes 14 million, and Kelvin Hayden makes 17 million, he's a CB. Is that right?? lol Bob sanders is around 4, and the rest are average salaries, but look at there defense. It blows- Basically this is a tough call for Tanny and I'm not sure what I expect out of this just yet. EDIT- Kelvin Hayden agreed to a five-year deal worth $43 million, that was his 09 salary according to fox sports.
Screw him, if he wants the Jets to sell the farm for him, then trade him to the Rams. If I was Tanny, I sign Brick and Mangold first just to spite Revis. The greedy always lose in the end.
I don't feel like going through the whole thing to see who is a total hypocrite but I would be willing to bet at least a few of the people in the screw him crowd were singing a different tune in the Revis wants 20 million thread.
Almost everyone in this thread has gone bat-shit crazy. Revis will get signed and the road to get there won't be pretty. All this "trade Revis" or this "he's not worth anymore than 12M" talk is just insanity. The new CBA, Crazy Al, Revis' agent, negotiating tactics, and future contracts are all the obstacles lined up for Mike T., so he's got his work cut out for him. Like WSW said, we need to be patient here with this situation. It'll all work itself out in the end.
If not Revis is gone wherever we like it or not, if he's trying to get that much cash then it's not worth it to the organization to keep him
Let's cross the bridge when we get there. As of right now both sides sides are engaged in normal negotiating procedures. Everybody (at least I knew) knew this contract would be the most costly out of the other 3 and that Aso's contract would be a pivotal # in negotiations. Let's see how Mike T. handles this before we begin to discuss how many picks we can get for Revis.
Saw this from Florio (he sucks, I know), but it was posted on Mehta's twitter also. Mentions that he could jeopardize the guaranteed part of his last 2 years if Revis misses anything mandatory. Interesting read, just ignore that its Florio. I apologize if its been mentioned a million times, didn't see this anywhere. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/06/04/jets-could-be-baiting-revis-into-holding-out/
