The market is what it is... The market says CB is more valuable and is higher paid than OLB. Aso is being paid 16mil. Revis will want (and rightfully so) at least that much.
the difference is that Aso got that over a 3-year contract. It's common knowledge (at least I thought it was) that the longer the deal, the less/year generally. Most players will take 2/$30M over 3/$35M because they get $15/year instead of $11.67/year
mmm... take away Aso's deal (ridicolous because of Crazy Al)... what's the next biggest contract given to a CB? On average OLBs are paid more imo.
The Pats have also let go of one star cornerback after another, never paying a premium for them. Bill Belichik is maybe the greatest defensive backs coach of all time. He's also a very unconventional coach in terms of his strategy and tactics. When he backs up the conventional wisdom, which is that CB's are less important than most other defensive positions, and he backs it up in his primary area of expertise I think you have to accept that he's probably right: cornerbacks just aren't worth paying a premium to retain if it costs you star players at other more valuable positions.
Well, anyone would take a 2/$30M over a 3/$35M deal. But that isnt a normal situation with such a discrepancy. Maybe a 2/$30M vs. a 3/$42M. How long of a deal is Revis looking for? I'm assuming a 4-5 year deal? A 5 year $75M deal should do the trick. It has to be close to Aso's. Maybe a little less per year for a couple of extra years... but nothing like you're describing...
But, you cant take away Aso's deal. And his agent isnt going to let Tanny take away Aso's deal. It doesnt work like that. Aso's deal is a big key to this whole thing.
Nor should it be. Revis deserves to be the highest paid corner in the league, but it's Tannenbaum's job to get him to sign for the lowest amount possible. This isn't a Leon Washington / Pete Kendall situation though. The Jets can't afford to not get a deal done with Revis--it may be a brutal negotiation, but they will eventually settle on a contract. Even if it means having to say goodbye to a few other important pieces.
Highest paid in football shouldn't mean highest annual salary. It should be most guaranteed money. So guarantee him 50 mill over the first three years and he's beating aso's contract. Then give him 35 mill over the final three. Done and done!
i didnt know how many gm's there are in ny... look at what tanny has done for this team... hes got a huge task in front of him but i have total faith in him
the NFL needs to put a stop to players fucking wanting new deals when they havent even finished their contracts yet.
I disagree, what's the average NFL career? 3 seasons? In a league where 1 play can almost end your career or severely debilitate your ability to perform, I think you have to get paid in your prime, and if your prime is your first four years and you signed a crappy rookie deal because you were drafted in the 4th round, then go get paid.
Only way that happens if they ALSO stop letting teams cut their deals before they have finished their contracts...
Hypothetical Question What is revis worth on the market today? What would we get for him if we traded him today? Of course I want him to remain a jet and also confident that we will lock him up for the remainder of his career. But what is a guy of his caliber worth?
It's hard to think clearly. Especially when my hair is on fire, and I'm running around in circles. His name rhymes with Jesus, so I dunno prob alot. 2011 first round pick 5-10. 2011 2nd round pick too. (reasonable guess)
Two questions if we do not get a resolution done: 1st Question...Would you wants the Jets to trade Revis, and if so where and for who(m)? My answer: Give me a 1-for-1 swap with Nnamdi Asomugha and then figure out a way for the Raiders to pay some of the tab My reasoning: I'd rather have Harris, Mangold & D'Brick happy and on the team than Revis and only one of the other one's...if it came to that. 2nd Question: Can the Jets win a Superbowl this season without him? My answer: I vote yes. My reasoning depends on a lot of 'ifs': If Cromartie plays close to what he was in '07 + if the offense can produce about 24 - 27 points per game with Sanchez + if The Jets can get more of a natural pass rush/qb pressure The scheme is outstanding and I believe that the Jets can win without him. If there is no resolution in sight I say trade him. EDIT: I may be speaking from emotion.
You and I agree. $$$$ per impact snap. Revis needs to know that Nnamdi's contract is out of the ball park, but a 7 year deal at a high rate is doable...
