Nobody knows why we got rid of him. Herm Edwards came in and blew up what was a very solid secondary by releasing Victor Green, Aaron Glenn, and Marcus Coleman.... replacing them with zone defenders slower than molasses such as Aaron Beasley, Donnie Abraham and Sam Garnes. YIKES. Don't even bother trying to pick the brain of Da Herm.... Shaun Ellis to DT...
He didn't release Glenn and Coleman, they were made available to the expansion draft and drafted by the Texans, because we were in cap hell after Parcells gave a ton of guaranteed money to Vinny and Curtis. We lost Ryan Young in that same deal. I hated seeing Glenn go, but I saw it at the time as a necessary evil. Not something I would blame Herm for, although there's plenty of blame that Herm deserves for other things.
I see. I was under the impression he wanted to bring his own boys into the secondary, being a former secondary coach. Either way, I loved the Glenn/Coleman tandem too and never wanted to see them leave.
Aaron Glenn was one of my favorite Jets of all time, he was a consummate professional and an excellent man cover corner. He was a key part of the success of the 1998 team. Coleman was the Cromartie to Glenn's Revis, if I may be so bold as to make a comparison. Coleman was a physical specimen, excellent athlete, but not half the cover man that Glenn was. However, his game-sealing pick in the overtime period of the Monday Night Miracle made up for any shortcomings. We went from having a scary secondary and dominating linebackers to have a Swiss cheese secondary and the same linebackers in the twilight of their careers. That was the beginning of the terrible personnel choices made under the Hermway regime.
Herm should never have ditched the 3-4. The pieces were all in place from the DL to the DBs. Then, in an incredibly retarded twist of fate, he hires a DC who has only ran a 3-4 in his career (Cottrell) to coach up his poopy Tampa 2 zone.... But we're getting off topic here. My apologies.
QB: Vinny OL: Mangold, Moore, Mckenzie RB: Murrell FB: Baxter WR: Toon, Moore, Cotchery TE: Brady DL: Gastineau, Ellis, Fergusen, Lageman LB: Mo, tie: Marvelous Marvin-Vilma, Pace (He's our Farrior, who I would've put was he not awesome away from here) CB: Glenn, Revis Christ S: Green, McMillan K: Leahy P: Aguiar (the song KR: LEON ?: B.S.
Martin was undoubtedly a better RB than Boozer, Schuler had better hands than Caster (But not his big play ability), Green was better than Baird, and Turner was probably the best kicker we've ever had, but my list was based on personal favorites rather than who was best, although sometimes the two are one and the same, but other times they're just guys I just really liked. (hence why so many on my list are from teams from 1967 to 1974, the period where I tended to idolize players)
young jet fan here.. some of my favorites: qb pennington rb martin fb big tony richardson wr cotch te keller (i liked baker as well) ol mawae/mangold tie ----- lb vilma (love harris too) dl jenk cb revis s eric coleman and my current favorite jet jim leonhard k feely (still pissed hes gone) p ben graham st leon/justin miller/brad smith/wallace wright/etc football is my 4th sport.. was born a jet fan but only really really followed the game towards the end of the 90s (and my history/knowledge of the franchise sucks to be brutally honest unlike my other 2 teams-knicks/mets).. really gotta hit the books its embarrassing how little i know of my team pre mid-late 90s
I never got to watch Todd play nor do I know much about him but looking at his career stats he was a brutal QB. What was fun about watching him play?
Check out his stats in 1981 and 1982. He took the Jets to the playoffs in those 2 years for the first time since 1969! He was also the QB of my youth, so I have a lot of fond memories of watching him play. Lot's of nostalgia for Todd.
Offense QB- Vinny Testeverde RB- Curtis Martin FB- Ritchie Anderson WR- Wayne Chrebet TE- Dustin Keller OLine- Nick Mangold Defense DLine- Sean Ellis LB- Jonathon Vilma CB- Darelle Revis S- Victor Green
QB - Kenny O RB - Freeman WR - Chrebet, Walker TE - Jerome Barkum OL - Joe Fields - Mangold DL - Klecko, Ellis LB - Lance Mehl , Mo Lewis CB - Revis, Glenn S - Green
Coach- Rex Ryan (I am a Parcells guy, but REX is in for the long haul. Parcells has always a limited stop gap.) Offense QB- Ken O’Brien (Considering the negatives of the over sized playbook and head coach he had to work with he was my favorite.) RB- Freeman McNeil (Yes for the high Draft Pick he was not quite t as advertised, but he never averaged under 4 yards a carry with 8,074 yards rushing, 4.5 yard average and 2,961 yards receiving during his time with us. How many other jets have given the team 11,000 yards? Plus a 3 time Pro-bowler.) FB- Tony Richardson (By default, since most FB were pretty shitty and he is a likely HOFr. WR- Wayne Chrebet (No question!!! I have my flashlight, jersey and Danbury Mint statue.) TE- Mickey Shuler (Best TE we ever had.) OLine- Nick Mangold (No justification needed!) Defense DLine- Joe Klecko (When will they make him a HOFr?) LB- Kyle Clifton (Never got the recognition, but he was the sole of the defense. Is 21 tackles shy of the 1,500 mark...never missed a game because of injury dating back to junior high school.) CB- Aaron Glen (Darelle Revis can pass him on my list if he shows to be a team player and resigns with the Jets for a reasonable contract that does hurt the team.) S- Victor Green (In 7 years as a starter for the Jets he had 24 Int, 61 PD, 12 FR, 7 FF & 6 sacks as a SAFETY. And seventh on the Jets all time tackle chart.) Special Teams guys: KR - JoJo Townsell Punter- Tom Tupa PR - Leon Johnson (Barely and because he didn't leave by choice.) K - Pat Leahy (Holds Jets' records for FG and PAT...holds club record for games played.)
Coach: Rex Ryan QB: Vinny, with Sanchez gaining ground fast RB: Curtis Martin FB: Richie Anderson WR: Jerricho Cotchery... wanted to go with Chrebet here, but I am a huge Cotchery fan TE: Dustin Keller OL: D'Brick DL: Sean Ellis LB: Jon Vilma CB: Revis S: Victor Green K: who cares? Jets have never really had a consistent kicker year-in-and-year-out. So i guess Feely P: Tom Tupa KR: Chad Morton, I'll never forget the game where he returned 2 kicks to win it against the Bills Only going with players that I've seen play in person, not counting recorded games from the past
No current players......... QB- Ken O ( I suppose I could have went with Richard Todd) RB-Curtis FB-Richie Anderson OL- Mawae TE- Shuler WR-Toon by a lot, then Walker DL-Klecko AINEC LB- Mehl, Mo Lewis S- Victor Green CB- Glenn K-Leahy
