He would play end in a 3-4, but I think he's better suited to be a rotational guy at this point. His specialty is rushing the passer, not really shutting down the run. Besides that, while he doesn't miss a lot of games it seems as though he's always playing injured. FWIW, if he comes to the Giants I think he is used as a rotational DT in the same role as Jay Alford (a 1-gap, penetrating DT). I think the way you get the most out of him is to rotate him and use him to attack the QB.
Dear Trader Mike, By the power of greyskull i command you to make this man a Jet. Sincerely Some Schlub
FWIW, Henderson did not visit the Chiefs. I still hope we have a chance. http://www.kansascity.com/2010/04/28/1910717/sports-buzz-henderson-doesnt-visit.html
Has there been an update on Big John? I think he would be a beast playing the 5 Technique for us. Not sure if he's made any team visits or was getting close to locking up with another club.
not that I know of, somebody with a twitter account tweet Schefter! I think big John would be a monster on the DL for us and would suddenly take what might be the weakest area of our football team, and propel it in league wide respectability. We know that devito and Pouha are great rotational guys, but as a starter opposite Ellis, we arent so sure. But putting them behind another animal in Henderson would just make our DL rotation that much stronger... Besides how do you run to the left with Jenks and Big John? Thats almost 700 pounds you have to move off the ball to run that way. Also it means Ellis would likely be seeing 1 on 1's all game, and as productive as he has been fighting doubles all day, can you imagine how beastly he could be with just 1 on 1's? I still say bringing in Henderson is the best move we can make at this point in the offseason to improve our team. edit: even if he isn't what we think when we bring him in and he fails miserably, we are no worse off than we are today. It is a ZERO risk move, (just like Jason Taylor) if it works out we look like freaking geniuses and if it fails, he doesnt play more than a handful of plays a game and we cut bait after the season. If the move fails, we lose nothing, but if it works we could be looking at an even scarier defense!
Henderson will wait a while because no one will want to pay what he is asking. He doesn't fit our scheme either. He is an up the field DL, not a gap holding 3-4 DE or NT. He'd hate it here. If he's willing to be a situational depth guy, which I bet he isn't, then he can play the non 3-4 schemes on this defense.
If memory serves me well, his best years were in a 4-3 when Stroud played more NT and he played the 3-Technique DT
I'm sure Rex would be able to find him a spot that he would be dominate in. Question is though is that a starting spot? Rex is nuts too btw did you guys catch Kris Jenkins lined up as an inside Linebacker last year? Saw that shit like 3 games. Was hilarious to see Kris try to gain speed and just run into the Oline.
I remember the Jags game this year and seeing Henderson on the sideline. He's a massive person but he was starting to become out of shape. I don't think we need anymore "name players". Let's let Jenkins, Ellis, Devito, Pouha, the other guy with the crazy name and gholston do their jobs. Rex's scheme does not depend on up the field down lineman, just big strong guys that occupy blockers and maintain their gaps. I also think they will bring back Douglas in July if no one else signs him. He's one of Rex's guys and unless someone else offers him a large contract he will most likely be resigned.
owen schmitt, thats my boy, he went to college here and lived with my buddy from high school who played tight end here, owen is a real nice guy but crazy as hell, dont let him play rock band, he 'll break the drums
I stopped caring the moment that the Chiefs pulled out of the running. The Jags failed in the 3-4 last season and gave up on it, and I doubt he wants to go back to a defense where he struggled. None of the other teams he was rumored to be talking to was a 3-4 team.
