There was a phin fan last year who said that henne would undoubtedly be better than sanchez. i'm really hoping he shows up here again soon.
Both have good upside... I don't know as much about Sanchez, but he showed great tenacity and leadership down the stretch for the Jets. As a Dolphin fan, I haven't been this excited for our quarterback position since Marino. He has struggled at times, but he has shown that he can make EVERY THROW - which is huge. Last season, he started 13 games and led us to a 7-6 record as a starter (that's including giving him a loss for the Steelers game which he only played a half). He gave us THREE come from behind victories - clutch. He did this on a team with mediocre receivers. Can't wait to see the team with Brandon Marshall. Anyways, this is a Jets message board, so of course there is going to be a natural bias toward Sanchez. But as a Dolphin fan, I can tell you that we are pretty satisfied with our quarterback position, as well.
Well, I can't speak for other Fin fans. I can only speak for my own opinions. I like Hartline and Bess... but neither one is CLOSE to a #1 WR. Not even close. And I would definitely put Cotchery above both of them. Bess is a great little slot WR, but that's all he is. And Hartline was very surprising last season (didn't even think he'd make the team when we drafted him). Hartline has some good size and some good speed, but isn't overly big or overly fast... and wasn't even ready to be a #2 WR, let alone a #1. I think he has the potential to be a nice #2 WR, but that's where his ceiling stops... and he still needs more development to be a legit #2. But comparing Edwards/Cotchery/Keller to Hartline/Bess/Ginn isn't even close, lol!
Learning the offense is a huge advantage for any QB. Even when you practice with the 2nd strings, you learn the offense. You still get occasional reps with the 1st team. Henne did that for a year and a half. Sanchez was NOT announced a starter during the training camp, although the understanding was there. I think it was announced sometime during pre-season. 1st team reps were divided until then. Either way, a rookie is still a rookie no matter how much he practices with the 1st team. A 2nd year guy will ALWAY have an advantage over a rookie no matter who he practices with. The comparison of having shitty WRs is a moot point. Jets had Jericho as the starter and Stuckey as the 2nd WR. Then the Jets lost Jericho when Edwards came over and Sanchez had Braylon Ed and David Clowney as the starters (against Miami, in fact). Sanchez had close to ZERO practice with Braylon and had to create a chemistry. In the process, Sanchez threw FIVE ints vs. the Bills, three or four of them while he was passing to Braylon and had miscommunication as Edwards was new to the system and Sanchez was still learning the offense. So having Braylon in fact, may have hurt Sanchez for a better part of the season until later in the season, when Sanchez actually picked up his game and showed what he can do (as a rookie) with two real WRs. This year, he'll have THREE #1 WRs, a year under his belt and hopefully more chemistry with them.
But, when you aren't the starter, it's not just that you aren't getting reps with thr 1's. You are getting much less snaps and reps overall. Getting a lot less practice in general. And I was also including Keller in terms of your receiving targets...
He'll always be Vagina Head to us. I keep expecting to see a tampon string hanging out of his facemask.
Was henne not allowed to lead Miami to points? His poor play(inclduing turning it over and not leading hos O to points) contributed as much as the D. Henne showed me alot last year BUT in the biggest games he played his worst unlike Sanchez.
Did you actually watch the games? He didnt play his worst in those games. He actually played well. The team fought back under Henne in the 2nd half of both the Titans and Texans games and averaged 18pts in the 2nd half of those games (didnt get to play the 2nd half of the Steelers). He threw for 350 yards and 320 yards respectively in those 2 games, completing 63% of his passes... and came close to bringing the team back... including pushing the Titans into overtime. Not to mention the BEAUTIFUL bomb he threw to Ginn against the Titans... very similar to the one against you for a TD... that was called back for some BS tripping call against our FB that had zero effect on the play (I ruined a hat after that call. I was pissed! lol). And he was on pace to throw for 280 yards against the Steelers while completing 80% of his passes. Henne wasnt close to the reason why we lost those games. He played well. The defense was garbage. I mean, the Texans scored on every single possession in the first half, lol... scoring 27 points alone in that half. We lost those games b/c of our defense... not Henne.
He didn't play well, his #s look good but there's more to the game than just #s. His ineffectiveness early in games killed his team. The Titan game never gets to OT if he doesn't have bad TOs and could have led his team to some points in the 1st half. It's great that they fought back and he played well down the stretch to make those games closer but if he wasn't so bad early they would have won those games.
Again, if you watched the games... you'd see the INTs were not just bad decisions or poorly thrown balls though. 2 of them were tipped at the LOS and popped up in the air. I would agree that he needs to improve on finding passing lanes to avoid the tipped passes. A couple of his INTs against the Bills were from tipped passes as well. I would agree that he has some room for growth in that area. But, at the same time... he was also missing the starting LG, C, and RG due to injuries during the final stretch of the season... which allowed the opposing DLinemen to get their hands on passes they shouldnt normally get. But this wasnt a case of Henne "crumbling" or anything like that. If you actually watched the games... theres no way you could possibly walk away thinking "man, if only Henne played better... we win that game". Sorry bro... but thats not how it went down. On a side note... good to see you nyjunc. Havent seen you on the Range in a while?
they still count and he still couldn't lead his team to points early in games helping them fall behind into huge holes. There's no doubt if he plays better against Ten they win, I'll give you the Houston game but regardless a knock on him in college was his performance in big games and so far in his only big games in the NFL he failed. Overall he had a good 1st year and I was impressed but he ended on a down note.
You mean John Beck, Cleo Lemon, AJ Feely, Joey Harrington, Gus Frerotte, Trent Green, Damon Huard, Jay Fielder, Sage Rosenfels, and Brian Griese didn't excite you???
Very simply because you made the claim that Warner's pick 6's didn't matter because they were early in the game and he was able to bring them back in the 2nd half and now you're saying that Henne's first half performance cost them the games despite him bringing the Dolphins back.
I got on Warner for his pick 6 but did Warner allow SL to get down by 18 pts, 24 pts and 17 pts 3 straight games? You are talking about one game, I am talking about a trend. Miami also got the ball to begin OT against Ten and henne threw an INT that set up the GW FG- did Warner do that in the SB?
Again, you are speaking about two individual games and I am speaking of a trend of 3 games in henne's 3 biggest games of his pro career. Also, Warner led SL back to tie against NE and never got the ball to win it and led Ari to the lead against pitt and never had a shot to win it while henne against Ten had the ball in his hands and threw the INT that led to the GW points for Ten. The situations are nothing alike.
The Henne Sanchez comparison is sad in my opinion. Henne had been a true freshman starter in Michigan and Sat a year in the NFL, something that Sanchez did not have the luxury of doing. Henne played in more bowl games and had more time to learn miami's offense. Henne should be miles ahead of Sanchez, As the Season Progressed Sanchez learned, as the season progressed, Henne did worse and keep in mind that Henne wasn't really annointed the starter right after the season. Also Henne had a great teacher ahead of him. Sanchez learned on the fly. Henne should be way ahead of Sanchez but in all he really isn't and that's concerning
