During a draft interview Tanny was addressing why the team didn't draft a DL and said they were high on Pitoitua (and we know that from last year) and Matt Kroul (spent the year on PS). Now I was reading the article regarding Rookie Numbers on nyjets.com and Randy Lerner lists Matt Kroul as a NT... could it be that he is the DE/NT we all wanted in the draft? At 6'3 280lbs he seems more a DE than a NT but being tall he might have the frame to put on an extra 35lbs and become a Kelly Gregg like NT... I know many of you don't even know this guy but to me it's always interesting to discuss about these unknown guys who might make our team better. After all before last year I was very high on DeVito and he proved to be a very valuable contributor (I think he'll start this year). PS I was kind of rooting for Rodrique Wright to be our 5th DE but Rex especiality is the front 7 so I'm sure he'll decide what's best for this team. Maybe Kroul and Wright make the team and Gholston gets cut
I'm willing to be he's heavier than 280 now. Kroul was 280 coming out of college. Kroul hopefully weighs around 290 after a year in the league.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing... wonder when updates about weight will be posted on the roster... What is the minimum weight to play NT? around 310?
Well, a guy can be shorter like a Kelly Gregg type player and get great leverage. If we have big, heavy ends like DeVito our nose tackle after Jenkins leaves won't have to be that big - probably 300 to 310 pounds. In Ryan's scheme, the NT doesn't necessarily have to take on two players - Bart Scott picks up the slack...he's basicaly a lead blocker for David Harris.
The Jets could have used an acquisition on the defensive line, but it's really not a big worry. Devito is 25, Pouha is 31, and Jenkins is healthy and still hefty. Kroul played most of his college ball in the 270's. That's an error on the writer's part. I think that we are going to see good things from the Big Pituitary this year. He'll have that broken leg well behind him and has an opportunity. Should be a fun camp. -X-
I was jsut going to bring up Gregg. one of the better NT's in the league and 6' flat and 310 pounds. Its not all about mass, but leverage, explosiveness off the snap, and use of hands to shed blockers. Quickness off the ball is as important if not more than overall bulk and NT. Yes you need ot be a thick body, but 350 is not always better than 310 is your just big and slow.
Gregg played at 285 in college at Oklahoma and he still holds the school record for tackles for loss in a season with 24. This guy bounced around from team to team before he found a role with the Ravens. Much like Kroul, Gregg started his career on a practice squad. I'm not saying Kroul will be the next Gregg, but a lot of developmental talent can be found on your practice squad.
Probably helped that Kelly Gregg was a 3-time state champion wrestler. That dude knows how to get leverage.
Kroul was also a state champion heavyweight wrestler. It'd be awesome if Kroul became half the player that Gregg is.
Wow, did not know that. I guess I should have guessed that from his lack of a neck. Edit: Holy, shit, he wrestled in Iowa, to boot. That is like wrestling mecca.
Yea anyone who makes the wrestling team at Iowa is pretty impressive. Hes worth shot to keep around anyone who wrestles for Iowa and is in the NFL is obviously very athletic. NOw if we can give him the build to play DE and NT he could be a dangerous player.
There is no 'set weight' for NT it has to do with your technique and leverage. Jason Ferguson played 2 gap NT for the majority of his career and played it effectively at 305 pounds.
