I think he's our only legit deep threat... who else on the list can take that role from him? The only one is Allison but I think in an Allison vs Clowney competition the Clown wins hands down.

Last year we didn't use that many 3 or 4 WR sets therefore we couldn't really utilize Clowney at his best but IMO a 4wr set composed of Edwards, Holmes, Cotchery and Clowney could be lethal... the guy has very good hands imo.

I don't think any receivers benefit that much from Holmes' suspension. We didn't use many 3-wide sets last season so I expect the same this season until we get Holmes back week 4. We might not even use the 3-wide as our base until after the BYE week 6.

Um, Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards? Edwards was brought in to stretch defenses, and Holmes is near the top in yards-per-catch every year.

At first, I wanted to pick anyone but Clowney, but if not him, then who?

I thought Allison could be the guy, but the draft pretty much takes care of the return game, and coming off a major injury, he's in deep trouble.

Remember, Wallace Wright is gone. The Jets did draft Conner, sign Lance Laury, and get a few other guys to help on specials. Brad Smith is also a key player on ST's, and he'll be the #4 or #5.

If the Jets want to put another special teamer there, Clowney could be in trouble. But none of the other options are that appealing. If Clowney impresses in camp as usual, it's possible they keep him one more year. He's only 24 years old, and he's at least been productive in training camp and preseason. The other receivers can't even really say that.

Plus, he knows the system. At 24 years old, maybe the light turns on and he can be a decent NFL receiver. I wouldn't want him as a starter, but just because his training camp play hasn't translated yet doesn't mean to give up on him as a #4 or #5. Especially with Holmes and Edwards on essentially one-year tryouts.

Of course, because of his lack of special teams play, if he doesn't produce a lot in camp, or someone like Britt Davis outplays him as a receiver, he's probably out of a job. But Clowney had the edge last year, and I expect that to be the case again when all is said and done.

I think Edwards and Holmes should be used as complete WRs and do a bit of everything... I want Clowney to do only one thing... ONE... stretch the field in 3 and 4 WR sets... and I think he can do that pretty well.

Last year we asked him to fill in for guys like Cotchery and run routes he wasn't really comfortable with. While I agree he would benefit greatly from learning them I also think he can contribute straight away in the way I described above (while he learns).

I see him ala Nate Washington when he was with the Steelers.

Nate Washington is a great comparison for Clowney's upside with the Jets.

But see, the Jets are still are still a run-first team. I don't think we'll go four receivers much. Holmes, Edwards, and Cotchery can be used interchangeably for different roles because three receivers are plenty for us.

If Nate Washington is the best comparison to Clowney, then there is literally no upside.

They're still going to need another WR option after Holmes, Edwards and Cotch. I don't have much faith in Clowney making it.
