Agreed. Either way you're paying him $5M+.

    ...unless someone else signs him.
...and it would've been worse if he gets injured in TC.

    ---

in an ideal world, I would've love to keep him as a backup for running plays, as a locker room guy and as an insurance in case neither Slauson nor Ducasse are ready yet.
But that's just too much money on a guy not playing as a starter.

somebody said this when discussing tebow this past weekend, you can not lead from the bench. Same thing applies to Faneca, benching him when he isn't ready to accept that role yet, you destroy his status in the lockerroom and you take away his credibility as a leader.

I agree, but I didn't said "lead" I just said "locker room guy", as in "group chemistry"... which is not very useful so it makes it more absurd to pay that much for that.
And about him not being ready to accept that role, that's why I said "in an ideal world". :)

I hate it when nice blokes I like get cut, but the logic is unassailable. He's a good guy who's been excellent for the Jets, but with the likes of Brick and Mangold really starting to hit their straps it's obvious that he's struggling to continue at the same level he's been capable of in the past. Like a wise man said on here not long ago during the TJ debate, it's always better to cut a player a year too early than a year too late. Good luck Alan, it's been great having you here and I hope you end up at a team I don't dislike.

another guy that i like but don't think we will miss very much next year. the worst thats gonna happen is that we start vlad and he does great in run blocking and sucks at pass blocking... which is exactly what we would have got from faneca. the difference is vlad is just scratching the surface of his talent while faneca is on his last legs.

I know he wasnt very good at pass blocking, but didnt he open up great holes for the running game? That kinda worries me a lil, will our running game be the same? If so, then im happy.

Ducasse is a freak of an athlete and very strong. From what we saw of Slausen's work on the OLine(2 plays against Tamap), it looked like he could get a good push up the middle but I'm not sure how good he can do pulling and blocking in space.

As for their pass blocking, it'll be damn near impossible for either of them to do worse than what Faneca did last year.

I still don't like this move, I felt they shoudl have allowed him to compete for his job in TC rather then cut him outright. I guess on the bright side it does give Alan some extra time to find a new home.

I do like what he said about Cally...

Faneca could only perform half of his job well (run blocking), while being an absolute liability with the other half (pass blocking). If he had stayed on the team, and was responsible for allowing a D player to get right through him with ease and Sanchez got seriously injured it would kill our franchise.

I am not a fan of "what if" scenarios, but he was such a liability in pass blocking that the "if" seemed much more possible than any other O linemen by a long shot.

Cimini enjoys riling up Jets fans. He's beyond transparent.

He also left out the liability Faneca was last year. Faneca's mean streak is his best quality, but it sure wasn't his LG play, sans the pulling play he does. That was the one thing he did very well. Sanchez took a lot of his due to Faneca - the most of any other OL.

Cato has a right to dislike him, since he was the worst player on the OL. People don't seem to grasp that. His pro bowl birth last year was a sham.

I didn't see this posted.. I know there was some confusion as to if Faneca signs elsewhere, would it offset the money the Jets owe him. Well apparently the answer is no, according to Schefter:

    From his twitter: Adam_Schefter

RT @P_Walters: will the Jets be off the hook for the 5 Mil if Alan Faneca signs? ... Nope, Faneca gets to double dip this season.

For those who are unfamiliar with twitter, someone asked him the question will they be off the hook, then he answered with the nope part. So we owe him 5.5 no matter what happens, where or if he signs anywhere.

If I knew my skills were declining, and I were cut, I'd love to be in Faneca's situation.

But when you are Alan Faneca, you don't think your skills are declining.

IMO, if we're only saving $2mill by cutting Faneca, then that clearly tells me it's more about his play (specifically his pass-protection) than his salary. It seems that the CS feels he's a liability, and it would benefit the on-field play more if he's not on the field.

Biggest fail cutting Faneca, He was still an excellent run blocker. Who's going to start Slauson, The rookie ? I Think they will both struggle.

His pulling around the Center was still excellent... everything else wasn't. Do you honestly think it was going to get better this year?

You don't pay someone top LG money to be mediocre.

Faneca's been a Pro Bowler and a winner his entire career. I'd expect him to take getting cut badly. It has to be a huge blow to his ego.
