ESPN gets it wrong again... We will lose one, maybe two of those players. We won't lose half like they are implying... fuckin tards.
In other words, the Jets will face the same thing every other team in the NFL does - trying to keep their core players, while older overpaid players either do massive renegotiations or leave. The moves this year actually make it less likely that any core players will go, rather than more likely, since the team got younger and cheaper. Other than the Edwards/Holmes decision, I see little reason to think that any player who is an important contributor in 2010 won't be here in 2011. This is the way the NFL works, and that's why there is a draft and why teams sign free agents.
I think Cromartie will definetly be gone, and I'm hoping Harris will be signed before any of the WR's are offered a contract.
Exactly. It's going to be a tight fit, but if anyone can do it, it's Tannenbaum, and every team faces this problem. To this extent? Maybe not, but we have insurance guys at certain spots. It's probably a one year tryout for Holmes, Edwards, and Cromartie because we have Cro's replacement and we can keep one of Holmes or Edwards. The only way this becomes a MAJOR problem is if we win the Super Bowl and everyone's value becomes instantly inflated and some guys will want insane contracts and others will give it to them. Then again, I think we'd all love that problem...
Exactly. Plus, most of our core players are young. With Faneca out and Ducasse in, the only place on the entire roster we're old at is defensive line. That's it. Everywhere else, people will be young. So maybe paying a few will be a problem, but hopefully other players get better to make up for it. Like, maybe Sanchez goes from being one of the worst QB's in the NFL to one of the best QB's in the NFL over the next few years to make up for some of our other deficiencies. That will be fun to watch.
Let's put things into perspective! 1) Ferguson's contract is up after the 2011 season, not 2010! - Sure, It would be nice to re-sign him before then because he is set to make 12.7 mill in 2011 but if we have to pay out some big bonuses in the 2011 off-season to someone else his contract can be delayed. 2) Same thing with Revis... Jets have the option to buy his contract back for 2011 at a price of 5 mill and 2012 at 11 or 15 mill. Since he is set to make a lot of money anyways I can see them buying back 2011 at 5 mill and then re-work a contract in 2012. 3) Harris is a RESTRICTED free agent in 2010. 4) Mangold, Cromartie, Holmes and Edwards will indeed be UFA's after the 2010 season. This means that next year we have to re-sign Mangold, 1 of the two WRs and Harris. With the other WR and Cromartie we can either re-sign them both (if we can pull it off), re-sign one and franchise & trade the other one or let one go and franchise & trade the one with more value. Then in 2011 we resign Ferguson and Revis... tadaaaa! I'll send Tanny my job application
I think it's a lock Cromartie goes, considering the investment in Kyle Wilson. I also think one of Santonio Holmes/Barlyon Edwards won't be back, withEdwards the likelier option to leave. It also wouldn't surprise me if Ryan doesn't bring back David Harris. Otherwise, Ferguson, Mangold and Revis are all obvious locks to stay.
Braylon has to stay even if it's just to increase a rematch with King James' entourage on the streets of Manhattan.
He writes like a typical Giants fan talks, pointing out something obvious as if it's some great epiphany. Of course Edwards and Holmes are questions to return. Their presence on the same roster makes them mutually exclusive after this season. One guy is going to get a contract and one guy is going to walk. Once Tannenbaum made the trade it was pretty much assumed that they were both on one year tryouts. Braylon had to get his head straight so he wouldn't keep dropping the ball due to concentration problems, and Holmes had to get his head straight so he would stop fucking up off the field. Whichever one does that job better wins a new deal. Cromartie could be here next season since Rex loves corners but then again we could also just draft another guy to fill in behind him and let Wilson take over Cro's spot. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Rex and Tannenbaum pull the trigger on another CB early if we get one BPA. Mangold and Harris are the only non-rentals up next season and between the two, Mangold is the least expendable. I love Harris but he's not a Ray Lewis-type HOF player. That being said, I expect both of them will get new deals. I know Harris is an RFA next season but unless the Jets are running low on funds I think Tannenbaum would rather get the long term deal over and done with to give himself more flexibility next year when he has two better and probably more expensive players to deal with. If Harris doesn't get a long term deal, he's getting a "1st and 3rd" tender. He'll be on the Jets in 2011. Brick is under contract until 2011 and Revis has the buy-back options on his contract so Tannenbaum has a season to wait and work the numbers out.
you're correct, but why did you use two incorrect words that sound like the right ones? "right" and "bye" I couldn't help myself.
the way i see it we are trying out holmes and edwards to be the #1 and whoever loses will be out after this season. other than that i won't be surprised if they keep everyone else. since tanny has been GM i have heard every year how we are gonna run into cap trouble down the line and it has never happened. when he first got here we were also bracing for a year or two of cap hell. tanny takes the job and the next week we are under the cap.
Everyone is bringing up good points but we are all forgetting something. I think we are attacking a point that has a lot of x-factors as well. X-Factors are how much people enjoy playing for Rex and if the Jets actually wint he SB, guys like Ellis will probably retire going out on top. Second chances sometimes change people. I'm not saying all of our "troubled" players will make a 180, but guys like Cromartie, who may have a great year, may be willing to stay with the Jets for a reasonable contract. He really didn't have off the field troubles, he just can't keep his dick in his pants. Holmes and Edwards may see the Jets as a place where they can share the load and do well cause the defense will be strong enough to carry the team, and there is a great O-Line and a steady Franchise QB. WR's tend to dislike playing where there is a QB carousel (enter Edwards). Plus they are in the NY/NJ spotlight. Its the Mecca of media and there are tons of "after football" opportunities they can gravitate too. My 2cents but I think there are outside factors we are forgetting about that may change the strict numbers game.
This is actually an area that I'm not very concerned about. Tanny is very good with numbers so when it comes down to brass tacks he's the man you want. I have greater concerns with the depth on either lines. It concerns me a bit that we cut Faneca to save only 2 mil but it must have been worth it or else they wouldn't have done it, right?
This is a good problem to have, in a way. It's better that our draft picks have turned into [super]stars. We'd have fewer contract issues if Revis Christ were a mere mortal, but that's not the case, and I couldn't be happier.
after the last week, i'm surprised no one has suggested cotchery may be the odd receiver out after 2010.
