His age is irrelevant b/c he doesn't have many carries for a 28 year old. The leg injury is huge, if they feel he'll never be the same that's a different story but they still should have been able to get more than what they got for him. It's so comical how people on here care so much about Alvin keels. All agents are a-holes, they have to be. They are trying to get as much for their players as possible. Some are better than others but it's so funny reading comments that from clueless people being happy that we he's gone b/c of keels.
It's easy to understand why people are losing their minds right now. We lost 2 vets within the span of an HOUR! However... There is a plan in place gents. We need to keep a young core to keep up with the rest of the AFC East. With the exception of the Bills, everyone is stacking up and getting younger and more talented. If this plays out the way the staff wants it too, we are looking at a young OL for years to come. Callahan is one of the best OL coaches in the league, and he knows what he wants. The line of Brick, Slauson, Mangold, Moore, Vlad in 2011+ is rich in talent and youth. Add in the fact that you have 3 vets (Brick, Mangold, Moore), you have a SOLID line for years! Faneca's leadership will be missed. BUT, let's be honest, he was NOT the same player anymore. Now, Leon also is gone. He's coming off a COMPOUND FRACTURE of TWO bones in his lower leg. The guy hasn't even passed a physical yet, and he is still running in straight lines. Guess what, his strength was not running downhill. I love Leon, and wish him well, but he's a damaged commodity right now. Therefore, we got what he is worth RIGHT NOW. We got McKnight, who already has a rapport with Sanchez, which will work to our advantage. Additionally, we got Wilson who is a dynamic returner! He has been replaced with guys that can fill those holes he left. I know I'll hear the argument about "Yeah, they are SUPPOSED to be good". Well, then I shoot back at you..Leon is "SUPPOSED" to bounce back to 100%. What's done is done. Don't stress, this isn't the SOJ!
The business side of things has nothing to do w/ us fans. When they start reducing ticket prices when they release big money guys then I'll care. I don't care about their books, I'm not running their franchise I'm a fan who wants to see his team get better They didn't need to make this move today, they could have at least goine through OTAs and gotten a better feel for their young guys. The lst thing this team needs is a big hole on the left side of the OL this year.
This team had the same hole last season on the left side of the line, many just chose to ignore it... now it has a chance of being filled
Actually it is, we weren't signing Leon to a 5 year deal. He doiesn't have alot of carries in his legs, Jones was 29 his 1st year w/ us. B/c of injuries early in his career he didn't have the normal wear and tear a 29 RB would have and he had 2 excellent years for us.
again, I'm ok moving faneca. It just doesn't make sense TODAY. was he due some sort of roster bonus soon? was it just to show respect to him so he could find another job before camp? I need more answers.
So TJ's obvious loss of a step at the end of the season and refusal to restructure his deal has no bearing on him being gone is what your trying to sell? And that a COMPOUND fracture of 2 bones has no affect on a 28 year old back in Leon??
The business side of things has everything to do with why they made this decision. If you don't care about it than stop complaining. How the fuck does keeping a guard your staff has determined they no longer want on the team help the Jets? If anything, it ties their hands because now you have 3 guys splitting fewer reps each with the starting OLine so now they have less to go with on their evaluations. The Jets don't want Faneca on the team because they don't think he can play. That's why he was let go. The longer they keep him is less time they have to find a veteran to either compete with or back up Slausen and Ducasse if they cannot do it.
Jones wasn't 29 coming off a devastating double compound fracture. Leon's biggest strength is now his biggest weakness, UNTIL he's 100% healed. Mike Bush had a similar break, and he's a north/south guy. He's just coming into form. I don't want to compare how people heal, since I know everyone else is different. But, it's not like he's coming back from a broken arm. This guy depends on his legs for his cuts, and it's not going to be an uphill battle for him to come back to form.
I honestly believe this is why they did this. If they waited to cut him, it would have seriously cut into the number of teams interested.
Do you really think that snapping two bones in his lower leg doesn't count as wear and tear? That's a 16 month recovery period at best. Michael Bush had the same injury late in his senior season at Louisville and wound up sitting out his entire rookie season with the Raiders. Leon just started running, can't make cuts yet, and isn't going to be as strong coming into the season as he used to be right away. That's one depleted running back at the age of 28 once the season starts who isn't at full strength. Not to mention the fact that Leon was a kick returner so you have to add that to the hits he has taken, as well as a receiving option. There is more to evaluate than just his carries.
Jones was hurt at the end of the season. Jones lost a step but LT hjasn't? Jones offered the jets the same deal he signed in KC which was around the same amount they signed LT for. I don't know if leon will be the same but I would have loved to have found out rather than give him away for nothing. Favre was a business decision too, just b/c it';s a business decision doesn't make it a good decision and last I checked we are allowed to complain about it. Every move is not a good move. Was it a business decision or a performance decision? if they feel he can't play that's difference, you were telling me it's all about business. I understand that and maybe they know he'll never be the same but they still should have been able to do better than giving a 7th rd pick w/ leon for a 5th rd pick.
I just mentioned that as well. It's taken him years to get back where he is now, and I don't think that's even on par with his college performance.
Honestly, I'm sure if they COULD have done better, they would have. It's a hard pill to swallow losing a fan favorite. The league dictated what he was worth, and that's what we were able to get back. I don't think Tanny turned down a better deal.
NO ONE was giving anything for Faneca because who wants to pay the guy a 7 million dollar bonus for a player the Jets don't think is that good anymore.
Actually, I said it was both. I brought up the business side to argue your asinine argument that Tannenbaum and Woody should throw more money away just because they could. Do you really think that Tannenbaum simply settled for the first offer there?
Look, Jones did not play well towards the end of last year. When Greene went down it became apparent Jones is not the answer. And you have to understand we can't just rely on the guy who is coming off career threating injury. I feel a lot better about our back-up situation with LT and the rookie RB we drafted. Jones PROVED at the end of last year he can't get it done. And Washington's injury might take years to recover, if ever. We got younger and more talented at RB, no question. And we still have veteran leadership in LT. And Taylor is one a one year rental who will give us a pass rusher we lacked. Unlike Jones, he did not regress towards the end of last year and still played well. Jenks is expected to be 100% ready to play though by start of the season. Washington's injury is a lot worse. I don't think it is fair comparison. And Faneca allowed most sacks in the League on the team that mostly ran the ball. That's very dangerous stat for Sanchez. He had to go regardless. Whether we cut him today or not does not really matter. Looks, we got rid of 3 players (Jones, Faneca, Wash) who are just not expected to play well next year. Jones and Faneca because they sucked towards the end of last year already, and Washington because of horrific injury. And we replaced them all via free agency and draft and got younger and more talented in the process. In addition to that we got some other players who are expected to play really well for us, such as Wilson, Comatree, Holmes, Taylor. Plus a decent talent for FB back-up. So far so good.
