Not at his age and $ value. The fact that Faneca did degress over the later part of last year has alot to do with this. He was a very disposable lineman. Faneca of 5 years ago and this would have been a lose lose situation. .Faneca today, this doesnt bother mean one bit.

Guys, there's no cap this year! Let's start throwing money everywhere. Did anyone give Coles a contract yet? Throw $20million at him for two years!

are you writing the checks? will it affect us in future years? so who cares how much we spend on certain players this year? he may not be all-pro caliber anymore but he can still play. It's asinine to get rid of him now but that just adds to the asinine decisions to let Jones go for LT, to let Feely go, to give away Leon for a bag of balls,... but you draftniks are pumped b/c we got more picks!

So we got rid of a old lineman, an injured running back, an old running back who declined heavily in the playoffs and a kicker... Boo freaking hoo.

Rex has said a few times that any early draft pick will be expected to play.

and we replaced the old lineman w/ a rookie from a small school who may or may not be ready to play as a rookie, we still have no OL depth,, we replace dthat injured old RB w/ another old RB who has many more carries in his legs and we got a kicker who couldn't kick a PAT last year. Boo freaking hoo.

Slauson is most likely going to fill in for Faneca. Unless Vlad shows off in the offseason. IMO, Vlad is Woody's replacement next year.

We need young talented guys to dominate AFC east because you know the Pats are rebuilding their team too. IF we keep old, expensive and injured guys, then there's no way we can stay at the top in our division!

A voice of reason... I needed that. Today was an absolutely gut-wrenching draft day, but I know you are right on with this.

We've got to look ahead. Younger, healthier up-and-comers.

Faneca couldn't cut it anymore so we got rid of him. Worst pass-blocking guard last season and a shell of himself as a run-blocker. We needed to get younger and now we have Slausen and Ducasse to fill in his spot while New England retools its front seven.

Hopefully he can pull in a contract so the Jets can save some $ in resigning Mangold, Brick, Harris and Revis.

I cannot believe the whining and moaning in this thread. OMG the season is lost!!! The 2010 Jets are history!!! Give me a break. Why doesn't anybody have faith that the FO and CS know what they are doing.

    Let's recap:

Jones is let go. Big loss? No. He was clearly a step slow at the end of last year and averaged something like 2.5 YPC over the last few games and the playoffs. Plus, he and Shonn Greene are the same back. And Greene looked like a monster in the playoffs

LT is signed. I am skeptical here, but LT is not replacing Jones. Greene is. LT was brought in to replace Washington as the 3rd down back. LT can still catch.

Feely is let go. I liked Feely as much as the next guy and he was very consistent, but with the Final 8 rules in effect, the Jets needed to free up money to sign a free agent. Folk was one of the best kickers in the NFL in 2008-09 and played hurt last year. If he is healthy, he can replace Feely and has a stronger leg. The Feely money permitted the Taylor signing, which could fill a huge hole. If Folk returns to close to his former self and Taylor gets 8+ sacks this year, the Folk for Feely move was well worth it. Kickers are plentiful. Pass rushers are gold.

Trade Leon. The Jets made their run last year without him. He is what he is because of speed and elusiveness and nobody knows if he will ever be the same. Plus, he is unhappy with his contract and he and his agent made one of the dumbest moves in history in not signing a deal last year. And he is 28. Is this really that big of a loss? And Wilson returns kicks.

Faneca cut. Do you really think that Tannenbaum, Ryan, and Callahan are all a bunch of idiots??? They must know something, and I think that something is that he was the weak link on an awesome line last year and is over paid. This is no Kendall situation and the Jets would not jeapordize a potential championship season unless they had a replacement in mind that they thought was better. He graded out as the Jets worst lineman by far last year. As soon as they drafted Ducesse, he was history.

Uncapped year. Please keep in mind that EVERY NFL team is treating this year as a capped year even without the cap. The uncapped year is not a green light to give out or retain bloated contracts left and right. What happens when the CBA is signed and cap comes back in place. How do the Jets keep their young star if they are going to overpay for old veterans.

The Jets had a great off season and draft. If people can't see that, they are blind.

I would have to say the guy that is writing the cheques would care a lot about that.

If he isn't playing like an all pro then why pay him like one? Just because the league isn't telling you that you cannot overpay for mediocre talent doesn't mean you should. This is the most asinine argument to come up in the uncapped season. Just because there isn't a ceiling doesn't mean you throw money out of the window. It's a business and it's a terrible business decision to waste money like that. Jesus Junc, you know jack shit about college football and you're worse at economics. You have to be, by far, one of the worst posters on this board.

I don't disagree, I do expect this 2nd rd pick to slide to RT when Woody is done but I think they made the move for him to start this year. I hope they are right.

Young guys like LT and Jason Taylor? getting rid of "old" guys like Leon?

I don't think anyone is giving up on 2010 but what has happened today is frustrating.

LT MIGHT give us what Jones gave us and Jones wa s team leader- why make the change? Jones offered the Jets the same contract he signed w/ KC which is essentailly the same LT signed.

We brought in an old pass rusher w/ the room we got when feeley signed in Ari. An old pass rusher who has NEVER stepped up in big games or big moments. Maybe w/o the pressure of being a star here he can make plays in big spots but he's never done it before.

The jets made the run last year w/o jenkins- why not get rid of him too?

They cut faneca b/'c they are being cheap, I'm ok moving forward w/o him but why cut him today? why not see if one of the young guys is ready?

No one is asking the jets to sign blopated contracts but a guy like Leon would have been a FA after this year, we had no future money tied to him.

The jets offseason performance is TBD. Talent wise it looks good and we got some big names but we don't know how these new players will mesh. There's a reason all those players were available. To say we have had a great offseason is foolish b/c the only way it is great is if we make a run to the SB. I hope it is great, I hope I am wrong about some of the moves that I think are bad but that is all TBD.

you aren't half the poster I am and you don't have half the knowledge I have. Stop pretending like you are Woody here. The team is doing just fine fleecing the fans w/ PSLs, they can afford to keep Faneca's salary for another year. this isn't Kansas City, this is NY and we have a team on the verge of doing big things and we have made a million questionable moves this offseason.

I don't care about how much woody makes and neither should you, I care about my team doing all it can to win a championship and a move like this strikes me as a woody wallet move rather than a move to try to win. It didn't have to be made today, what if we go into camp and don't have a LG ready to play- what then mr. guru?

College football sucks, it's boring so you can have the title of knowing more about CFB but put up video of players and I can evaluate them better than you can.

He's coming off of a double compound fracture in his leg and he's going to be 28 before his rehab is done. How is he a sure thing?

We filled every hole on the team that he used to fill with Joe McKnight, and now we don't have to deal with his asshole agent or another contract holdout. We had no fucking use for him and he didn't want to be here.

My E-dick is so big it's on the NT rotation with Jenkins!!1!!11!!1!
Sure, completely ignore reason in an argument. Sounds just like you. We have a shit-tone of contracts to rework next season.
OK, so we keep Faneca and then what do we have? Two young guards who are still learning, and a $7million guard who can't run-block anymore, could never pass-block, and eats up money next season that could go to players who can contribute to this team. I'd rather not be paying him to get Sanchez killed.
I'm just going to say bullshit to this and leave it at that.
