The reason I ask is that I wanted Odrick from the start and it REALLY pissed me off that he went ONE PICK ahead of the Jets, and to the DOLPHINS no less! ARGH!!!! Wilson is a very good pick though.
Honestly, I think you'd get a better debate if Dan Williams was still on the board with Wilson. For me, it'd be decided by a coin flip.
I just think we need more help on the defensive line. Again, I have no problem with the pick, considering who was out there.
It would have been a very good problem to have if we had to decide between Odrick, Kindle and Wilson. I would have went 1- Kindle 2- Wilson 3- Odrick
I was talking to MB about this last night. I really wanted Odrick as well, and DE is certainly a more pressing need than CB. There's also the financial impact of adding Wilson on re-signing Cromartie next season. However, with someone of Wilson's talent falling as far as he did, it's really hard to argue that anyone else would have been a better pick. He'll contribute immediately, he could very well be BETTER than Cromartie by next year, and could make our difficulties easier by not having to re-sign one player. At the same time, while we are in desperate need of a younger DE, 3-4 DE is an easier position to address later than if we were looking for the same out of a 4-3. I'd love to see us get Alex Carrington in the next round, unless Joseph somehow falls to us.
I said Wilson simply because cover corners with man skills are much harder to find than 3-4 defensive lineman of quality. At the pro level, Odrick's responsibility will be to hold at the point of attack and free up linebackers. Wilson's responsibility will be to cover one of the other team's best receivers. There are typically plenty of guys with size that can succeed on the defensive line in a 3-4 that are found later on. Miami starts Randy Starks and Kendall Langford, and both were 3rd round picks. The Steelers Kiesel and Smith were 4th and 7th round guys, respectively. It's a matter of scouting really, but the Jets seem to have had success in turning Mike Devito into an average rotational lineman out of nowhere and have a passable starter in Shaun Ellis. I think there's also more depth at that position. I do think we need to address it, but I am equally concerned about obtaining a swing offensive lineman to pick up if Woody or Faneca starts to slip this year. -X-
I'm not sold on Odrick anytime a player moves positions from College to NFL you have to give them more time to adjust. I really didn't see anything in his highlights on youtube that said to me Must Have.
Talent wise the are close - maybe Wilson has a bit more upside - but the talent gap in the draft at CB behind Wilson is greater than at DE behind Odrick. Also the talent scale for CB's is much more digital than for 3-4 DE's. A DE can be decent while a "decent" CB (ie sub 1st round talent) gets shredded by a top offence. Just my homer point of view.
2nd best CB in the draft vs a 34 fencepost lineman. Wilson has more position value in rex's scheme. We need depth at D line for sure but can add a big beefy body in round 2 or later in the draft.
Look, not to disparage Kyle Wilson, and I guess I know the answer already, but I really wonder what possessed Texas and New England to draft two inferior cornerbacks instead of Wilson? I'm wondering if there's something we don't know, or if those were just retarded picks.
lol thanks for the compliment, I like to alternate between reason and being a complete jackass though. In all seriousness, I wanted a bing beefy body. The Iupati rumors that were swirling made me smile. I was unable ot watch much of the action last night but when they announced that we took Wilson i was suppriesed he was still there. The insurance this provides for longterm CB depth is awsome and its an imediate up grade in the nickle and return game. It also begs the question, is Lowery gettign shifted to a Safty spot?? It would make a whole ton of sense for him to get a shot there this offseason with his ball hawking skills.
Thats a legit question Ed. I do know this though, i have a ton of confidence in this staff. If Rex loves him I'm all for it. If the staff could stop tanny from making a trade you know they were very high on him, because a draft with out a move by him is a rare thing. God I can't F'n wait for September.
I agree with this. I believe Wilson still would've been the pick over Odrick. If Dan Williams were there, that would have been more of a debate.
Agreed. Dont know about NE but from what the "experts" were saying today the Texans took Kareem Jackson because he fits better into their schemes.
