Yeah, I saw that by the 19th game of the season we were down to our #1 and #3 runningbacks with our old #1 breaking down. If we had Leon, we had a chance to beat the Colts, even with our defense breaking down. Once Greene went out, we had no hope of scoring. Having three runningbacks is key. I'd move Leon for a 3rd, or for a 4th and a 5th, but I wouldn't settle for too much less. There's still a role on this team for Leon as the KR, and as a part-time back. The only reason I'd consider moving him for a mid-round pick is because he wants a big contract. But I would rather have a healthy Leon than a healthy LT getting carries...
You do realize that the #3 RB was the only one in the platoon with a chance to be the starter in 2010 and that Leon wasn't there because he wasn't built to take the load as an actual #2 RB, right? If we move Leon, there are plenty of backs in the draft to bring in to replace him. We can find 3rd down/scat back in the draft pretty easily, even if we cannot get someone like McCluster or Best.
You people realise if we were going to get a 2nd out of Leon, we would have gotten it already when he was signed as an RFA, right? We'll be lucky to get a 3rd from him, if we trade him at all. I honestly, don't care what we do with him. I just don't give a shit at all.
That would be interesting but what team would do that for a RB coming off a major injury and a QB with no chance of being a capable starter and a low 5th rounder?
Trade him to Oakland and make him keep Keels. We'll get a first and the NFL can film the resulting arguments between Keels and Davis as another offseason documentary.
He's damaged goods, let him go. It's kinda like a bitch with the clap, she may be fine now, but the damage has been done, sooner or later that shit will flare up and bite you in the dick and your forever screwed. Leon will not be the Leon of old.
We're not getting a 2nd for him. Teams could have negotiated with him this entire time and signed him to an offer sheet if they wanted to give up a 2nd for him. They're not going to decide NOW that it's worthwhile to give up a 2nd for the privilege of trying to work out a longterm deal with Keels and Leon. We likely won't get a 3rd, either, and with deflated trade values in the NFL this year, we may not even get a 4th. I'm sorry, but at a 4th or below, I don't get rid of him. The value we get in return is unlikely to bring us a usable backup, and we all saw what happens last year when you try to rely on your running game with sometimes injured Shonn Greene and an aging back. It can complicate things, to say the least, down the stretch. At this point, we're probably best off keeping him even if we lose him next offseason.
It depends on his prognosis. If he's gonna make a full recovery by September, keep him because he is an excellent RB. If he's never gonna be the same flip him for a 3rd. IMO IF he can come back nearly 100%, he could be the most effective back on the team in 2010 and I can't see any 3d rd pick being that good. So if he's gonna be good to go physically and if he wants to be here - I'd keep him.
How much are you actually expecting the third RB? And why is Tomlinson already suffering from a debilitating knee injury?
I'm not expecting the 3rd back to get significant carries, nor am I suggesting Tomlinson will get hurt, but with all of the other pieces we've been collecting this offseason, it doesn't make sense to create a hole at the position for minimal compensation. There were people laughing off the 5th rounder we gave for Holmes as "someone who is 50/50 to even make the team", and now people want THAT for Leon? The risk/reward factor was great and very well matched when Leon was tendered at a 2nd rounder. If he had been signed to an offer sheet, we could grab a Gerhart or Hardesty with the 2nd. For a 4th or 5th? I'd probably take the risk and see whether Leon can come back strong. Retain his KR skills and have him as a part time back/insurance.
I'm one of those guys who loves Leon, understand he more than likely won't be the same again after his leg injury. I'd be happy with a 3rd, VERY happy with a 2nd. Any idea who might want him? New England has like 3 2nd rounders.
NE will not send us any picks for him above the 5th round. They are the last team that would want us to have even more ammo in this draft.
