Moose, I thought that too after the Ravens game. But I've come to realize that a lot has happened during Kellen Clemens' development (or lack thereof) since that game. He's just not the same guy who showed promise against Ray Lewis.
One game wonder. If he could maintain the ability, we never would have traded for Brett Favre and traded up 12 spots in the draft to get Sanchez. Dude is done as a player.
I was one of those fans. I admit I was wrong but.., let's not pretend that Sanchez was so great that Clemens could not had done better or as good as he did. But.., I can only imagine how bad Clemens felt when Seattle gave up what they did for a 4th stringer who haven't thrown a pass in a NFL game his entire career..., but here he is with absolutely no interest.
The difference as the season went on Sanchez improved and that certainly was helped by the running game but after the game he missed he was a very good QB. I felt bad for KC because he looked good that 1st start (at least for 1 quarter) and it seemed like he never had the same confidence in himself or his WRs after that game. It's always going to be a what if Jmac doesn't drop that TD pass with him but unfortunately he's done as a starter for the Jets barring injury (heaven forbid)
With no interest being shown by the rest of the NFL, it's looking like a legitimate possibility that Clemens returns to the Jets next season. If so, I really really believe it's time to move him down on the depth chart and let Ainge get a shot at being the #2. Clemens has clearly demonstrated that he has no ability to play QB in the NFL. Maybe Ainge is someone who would allow us at least a little confidence to step in if Sanchez had to miss some time.
I still think he has potential to be a starter in this league. I really like the guy, he doesn't fit in our system and I hope we can get something for him, but I do hope he eventually goes somewhere and finds away to embrace his potential and start for another team. Wishful thinking, maybe, but I hope.
So we lost Feely and kept Clemens. Someone, please explain to me how we can go into 2010 with this guy as our backup and Nick whatever as our kicker. Mr. T, what are we doing here
The trouble is who does want him! Interest seems to be zero and I can't see us getting anything for him.
I'd be disappointed if Clemens never gets a chance to really compete for a starting job. I just don't like the idea of drafting a guy and then never giving him a chance. Yes they see him in practice, but that's really not the same. Think back and remember that Chad Pennington got terrible marks as a practice player, then all of a sudden Testaverde starts stinking it up, Pennington gets his chance, and the rest is history. I hate to think a guy like Clemens, who's a great teammate, does everything right, and by all appearances practices well enough, might just never get that chance. Although, on the other hand, a lot of people did spend eighty bucks on Favre jerseys. So there's that.
They saw him for six games in 2007 and one this season. He's useless. Someone is going to have to go down with a huge injury for Clemens to see the field again on any team.
