But if teams are looking to acquire him with there 2nd then thatd be his market value wouldnt it?. Dont get me wrong, IMO he's only worth a 3rd and maybe a 5th but I think teams will look at the opportunity and possibly overpay for Leon.
So far, no teams have given an offer sheet to Leon, so right now that is not the market, just what the Jets have tendered him. And if it happens, which I doubt, Leon still has to accept their offer to make the 2nd round pick plausible. But if the Jets end up trading him, it's most likely because teams don't agree that the 2nd is the market. Otherwise, all they'd have to do is write up an offer sheet. Leon is a 28 year old runningback coming off a scary double compound fracture, and has never been a starter. It would boggle the mind for any team to be willing to give up a 2nd in a draft year like this one and also be willing to pay him enough that the Jets won't match.
I'm not stupid enough to take him with 2nd. Since that is a layman talking, you can safely assume that no real GM in his sane mind will pull that trigger, save Al Davis. (But then, even Al won't do this.)
Ya got me there abyz good shit. But if a team does offer a second for Leon I honestly dont possibly see them matching, it offers no realistic benefit with the upcoming contract extenstions of Revis , Mangold, and Harris.
At this point I'd say use him to move our 1st higher into the round. 17 San Francisco 18 Pittsburgh 20 Houston Would all be nice trade partners.
Dumb question, but how far into the process could we swing a trade deal with another team for Leon? Could we do it after he signs an offer sheet? Example: he signs an offer sheet with the Dolphins but the Patriots come along and say they'll give us a 2nd and 3rd for him. Could we pull the rug out from under the Dolphins and just trade him at that point to NE, or try to sweeten the deal with Miami before the 7 days is up? Just thinking through the possibilities of how to get the best deal if Leon decides to leave...
I would rather overpay him than let him go to that damn team. At the very least, you keep him out of the division. I of course am hoping he reups with the Jets.
That's not going to happen by any stretch, but the only way to "pull the rug out from under" a team signing him to an offer sheet would be to match the offer sheet and then turn around and trade him. It would be an absolutely asshole move and would sour a lot of people on dealing with us. No one has submitted an offer sheet so far as we know. The idea that someone will offer MORE than what he's tendered at is absurd.
San Fran - already in line to grab Spiller if they want a HB Pittsburgh - Don't know how to use him, has no need for him Houtson - Steve Slaton > Leon Washington
It's up to the player, Leon has no one to blame but himself. I couldn't care less about keels and his other clients. All I know is he did nothing to hurt leon Washington. he has been trying to get a lucrative long term deal and that is what agents do. It is up to the player to make his own decision whether to accept or reject an offer. It's funny how people forget how our D came up small so many times in big spots. You guys act like we had the '85 Bears. We had a really good but not great defense. I EXPECT we'll get better but weakening our team and strengthening a div rival in the process is never a good thing.
Thank you, well said. If we can get a second for him that is not bad for us. Hell If I can get used to seeing pennington in a Dolphins Uniform, I will get used to seeing washington in one. If the Jets get offered a second or more, they better take it.
Nobody will ever be the '85 Bears but you act like the Jets were the 30th rated defense in the league instead of the best. Really, "came up small"...haha.
We had a really good defense but it wasn't great. Great defenses don't allow a medciore Miami O to move the ball at will, they don't blow games like Atl and Jax or get thrashed like they did at NE or at Indy in the title game. I love Rex, I love the potential of this D and I think we have the mkaings of a truly great D but for people to act like they have arrived and our D is so good it doesnt' matter what wepaons opponents have is silly.
He's right, in a number of cases. The Falcons game, the first Miami game, Jaguars, and they got shredded in the second Pats game. Why? in a couple of cases, they couldn't deal with spread offenses (lack of a 4 man rush) and in a couple of other cases they could not stop the run to save their lives in the clutch. I'm not saying that the Jets had a bad defense in 2009, far from it. And a huge part of it was coaching. But the further we get from the 2009 season, the more I see the term 'elite' thrown around, as if we were shutting every team down that we faced, which is far from the truth. Until the Jets build a DL that can sustain a dominant 4 man rush, it will all be smoke and mirrors. Elite defenses can maintain with their base defense and dominate with their blitz packages. I think the Jets will get there, but they aren't there yet.
We had a very good D last year, but as previousely mentioned we were far from elite. However, with the addition of Cro and a defensive heavy draft we could very easily turn that corner in the next year or 2. One elite unit can make up for a lot of short comings on the other side of the ball. Seems like all the more reason to want a second for Leon in such a deep draft.
The sweet part about that one is, if Sanchez improves like a lot of us think he will, the short comings on O aren't going to seem so short. We have 2 good receivers, a top running game, an excellent receiving TE and one of the top O-lines in the league. The O is dependant on our young franchise QB. I'd gamble on him after seeing how he performed in the postseason.
According to you, junc..when we were debating earlier in the thread..our D got better when Jenks went down....and now you're trying to play it down and say they're aren't "great"? This just proves my theory that losing Jenks early in the season was a far greater loss than losing Leon....and that your comparison of the two was bogus. thanks for playing.
They weren't great. People want to call this defense great because of overall defensive ranking. I would argue that there wasn't a single 'great' defense in the NFL in 2009. The Bears took a step back, the Ravens were a shadow of their former greatness, the Pats were fucking terrible. The Jets' D was ranked so highly because the entire league took a defensive off year.
I agree with your statement, Abyz. And what junc is saying now...i agree with too. But earlier in the thread, junc was adamant in his opinion saying that losing Leon was as big as losing Jenkins. Which i thought was ludicrous....because dominant elite NTs aren't a dime a dozen....like backup HBs are (plus, our run game didn't miss a beat). Our run defense took a huge hit...and i used Maurice Jones-Drew running amok on us as my prime example of that.
