With the signing of Pool, our biggest need is now pretty debatable. If LT is signed, you could narrow it down to OL, DE, CB, or OLB. Many people argue which is more important : pass rush or coverage. They definitley complement each other, and either area we upgrade in is a plus. With that said, at #29, which do you want? OLB or CB? One of Graham, Kindle, Griffin, Hughes or one of Wilson, McCourty, or Robinson. In my opinion, we go BPA. However, I think our pass rush was lacking last year. We put a lot of pressure on opposing QB's, but didn't force as many turnovers or get as many sacks as a dominant D should. Another thing we should take into account is later round prospects. MrE., WW85, which class has better depth, CB or OLB? As to my answer to the question, I would be very happy with either Wilson or Graham. They both may be gone at 29 however, and then after that im not 100% on anyone else.
Brodney Pool is a role player. The guy's one hard hit away from spending the rest of his life in a hospital bed. Smith, Pool, and Ihedigbo will work in a rotation. I still think the Jets will draft a defensive back or two. The 3-4 OLB class is ridiculously deep. I think we'll be able to find great value in the 4th round. By the way, I voted coverage because I think our pass rush will improve with the addition of Antonio Cromartie. We should see a lot of coverage sacks in 2010.
I agree, but I figured the signing meant they definitley wont go safety in RD 1 unless Thomas or Berry fall. Would anyone else be worth taking in the 1st?
No. We should be able to get a hell of a safety prospect at the end of the second. Hell, someone might even slide to the fourth round. Safety is one of the deepest positions this year.
I know this sounds like a cliche, but how often do you hear about a secondary shutting down an opposing team, not a player an entire secondary...not frequently. How often do you hear about an opposing teams pass rush shutting down an opposing team...much more frequently Obviously both are more important but in a quarterback driven league it is more important to make sure the opposing QB is eating dirt as often as possible
Great coverage can cause sacks. However, pressure can cause quarterbacks to make mistakes. Hopefully we'll have a decent mixture of both. Me too.
Oh of course its a mixture a good pass rush makes a secondary better. While a good secondary makes a pass rush better. But I mean against the patriots in week 2 (outside of Revis Christ) our secondary did not look amazing, but our pass rush certainly did
Rex Ryan just confused the shit out of a scared Tom Brady. I'm really excited to see what our defense looks like with Cromartie playing opposite Revis.
Pass Rush=errant throws which = INTs for to CBs who can make plays on the ball. we need one more OLB who can scare a RT. Pace has the strong side locked up. Cactus' replacement has be as good or better than Pace. Its the only way this defense is truly complete.
Good poll. Both the pass rush and coverage units are important when it comes to getting to the QB, obviously. The media usually points to the pass rush but without good coverage a great pass rush can be beat with screens and other quick pass plays. I voted pass rush because we have needs at both DE and OLB. I don't really know what to say about FS because I haven't seen Pool play very much but supposedly he's had 4 concussions so we need some insurance in case of an injury. It's a good thing that this draft is so deep at safety. We could probably benefit from trading down.
We've upgraded our secondary pretty considerably, I'm heavily for an OLB. This team needs a true pass rusher like Gholston.
Coverage. There is a lot of good talent at both Safety and CB where we will be picking. In Rex's blitz happy system you can never have enough good cover DB's. As E stated, there should be good OLB prospects at our pick in the Second all the way to our 4th.
Either a 34DE or OLB. If Matthews falls, that's the only other position I'd consider. Or NT, but nobody of interest should be there. Trade down?
/Troll. I haven't seen this many dudes sitting around discussing sacks since I stumbled on to that Dolphins fan board. Be awesome to grab a DE at the end of the 1st, but I am all for trading down. Based on what people far more knowledgeable than me are saying, it would be great to get as many extra picks as we can. Although that will make it annoying when I sit through 3.5 hours of draft coverage on a Thursday night only to see the Jets pick get traded. But it will be all for the best.
Blame Goodell for a shitty move where if the jets had 2 picks in the 2nd round from trading back you'd have to wait until the next day to see it. Its the dumbest move on the planet.
I was always a passrush makes the coverage kinda guy, but i went coverage here based on that seems to be Rex's MO. He loves his DBs so I still expect him to jump on a good one early.
I voted pass rush. I do think we'll have a good shot at some quality players at both DE/OLB as well as S in the later rounds, so if McCourty is sitting there at 29, I wouldn't hate nabbing him. Don't discount the crowd's effect on Brady in that game - we made some f***in' noise in week 2! I could barely speak for 2 days. Loudest game I've ever been to...
