A theme can be developed w/o you having to be on my side. Also I did not compare Leon to Tiki another poster did. I stated several times I agree with Mr. E about Leon Washington not being able to carry the load season after season as Tiki Barber did. I was just playing devil's advocate and provided viable support for the poster's comments. I don't like how some people on this board dismiss other poster's opinions as if theirs (which get stated as if facts) are the only ones that matters. I think a high 2nd rounder in one of the deepest drafts in recent memory for a 3rd down back/special teamer close to 30 coming back from a compound fracture in the most important part of his body from a football perspective is more unlikely than getting a 3rd round pick. We both can agree to hope that I'm "horribly" wrong about that and are able to get a high 2nd.
There is a fucking theme here. This "theme" hasn't changed in over a year. If you go back and look at my posts about Leon Washington over the past year, you'll see that I've felt the exact same way. I'm not changing my opinion on him just to support my argument. Since the off-season of 2009, I've been down on Washington. I have had numerous debates about not keeping him here, him no being a feature back, and him being less versatile than Reggie Bush. I've taken a lot of heat for going against on of our own players. A lot of these fans on TGG are incredibly uninformed. Many posters thought Washington deserved a Jones-Drew type contract. Many posters think Washington is a feature back. They think that way because they get attached to players. The same way they got attached to Jay Feely, Thomas Jones, Chad Pennington, and some many other players that went to other teams.
Not sure I agree with that assessment. Prior to Leon getting hurt he was a major part of the offense more than even years past. So much so that Greene could not get anytime. He had 72 carries in 7 games that's 1 more carry than in 2007 and 4 less than 2008, both years where he played a full season. I think the plan was to beat opponents down and hurt them w/ speed.
Greene couldn't get anytime because he was banged up. He was "inactive". Also, the plan was to keep things simple for Mark Sanchez.
Touchy, touchy. The theme is not you changing your opinion but what can be used to support an arguement. For example, Best should not be considered a threat out of the backfield because he does not have a lot of receptions. Then a few post later it doesn't matter how many receptions he had. I agree you have not waivered in your opinions of Leon. Why does this reek of arrogance to me? What you might consider "uninformed", someone else might believe to be a difference of opinion. Did you go to a special school that many posters did not to become "informed"? Funny thing is that I agree with almost everything you've written in this post (even the Bush point) but I have a hard time communicating that when you make it seem there is no other possible view point but yours.
5% of Jets fans might agree with the Bush>Washington opinion. It took me a while to agree with it, but I understood it to be true. Fans are going to get attached to reliable starters. (although Pennys injuries didn't make him all that reliable) Its the nature of the beast. I didn't want to see Wallace Wright go because I knew how damn good he was at his job. The fear of losing a player lies in the mistrust of his replacement. We have a good GM. I think he can find the replacements, unless this is the regime that's going to ignore special teams.
He was healthy by game 3-4. I remember everyone crying on this board about him not getting any carries. And every press conference Rex having to field questions about why we were not using Greene more since TJ was off to such a slow start. "Well he's behind 2 pro-bowlers"...yadi yada.
Better not!!!!!ST is one of the most important aspect of the game! Also we have one of the better ST coach so I'm not worried! We are going to take ST seriously after what happened agains Miami!
The Bush/Greene position is also colored by draft position. Higher expectations were heaped on Bush, and people continue to hold him to it. His production hasn't matched his draft position, but it has certainly exceeded Washington's (special teams aside). I agree with all of this, and find it completely natural. The staunch defense of said players in the face of facts is still sad, though. I don't harbor any delusions about Washington. He's done well for us, but he's certainly not an irreplaceable All-Pro. I can see a situation in which he returns for us, and I'd love to believe that he can rebound from injury and fulfill the promise we saw leading into last season. However, I'd also love a full youth movement at the position and I have unabashed alumni love for one such player. My feelings are mixed on #29's return.
You are one enthusiastic chap. It takes a certain brand of poster to pull off the quinxclamation point.
Don't you get it, man. There aren't any other possible view points than mine. They are MY view points. I'm going to stand by them. Jahvid Best was taken out of games in a passing situations because Jeff Tedford didn't trust his ability as a receiver. Is that a good enough reason? He's not a polished receiver, but that's okay...because he's a running back.
Yeah, I think that's really the only knock on Bush. That and durability. If I were to have Bush or Washington for any given play, I'd probably have to choose Bush. But Bush has yet to show he can stay healthy for any extent of time, while Washington has avoided injury well up until the leg thing. And that one could have happened to anyone. I could live with losing Washington.. though perhaps not to NE. I think he adds a lot to this offense, adds a lot of plays, and I think he would be able to handle a lot more wear and tear than people think. If we sign another powerful RB, Leon would make a great complement to him and Greene. Plus replacing him with someone as talented, durable, and useful isn't going to be easy, and even if it's with a RB of a different caliber - say another one-dimensional power-back - there's always a gamble. The obvious problem is even if we match another team's bid, we're only delaying the inevitable. The shit with his contract is going to hit the proverbial fan eventually, barring some miracle. Someone will be willing to pay him more than he's worth and it won't be the Jets.
If we match another team's bid, that's it. We have him for 4 more years. That's all the shelf life a RB has anyway.
Oh I guess you're right. I was thinking if no one extends an offer and he stays, we'd only be delaying the inevitable. Still, if teams think he's worth a 2nd, I wouldn't be shocked if someone gave him a contract closer to what his agent's looking for.
Im loving that these rumors about the 49ers wanting Leon are heating up. It was even on the ESPNs twitter before that the 49ers are interested in him. The 17th pick of the 2nd round, now im just getting excited. Someone picks up Clemens for a 3rd too and I cant even imagine how good were gonna be next year. We could probably fill every single need on our team, and have our best chance @ a superbowl ever. Was reading the 49ers boards and it seems like more of them approve of this than dont. (theres definitely a fair amount both ways but more so towards approving). Glad it would make both of us happy. Leon would be perfect for them too, since they got a guy like Gore in front of him, and they have QBs who cant throw, so those dinky passes in the flat Leons perfect for.
One can only hope....Clemens for a third in this draft would be money in the bank. The thought brings a smile to my face.
