Does getting Cromartie change any minds on Rhodes?

Was just thinking about this myself. Right now, on paper, you'd have to say the Jets have the best secondary in the NFL. Maybe not the deepest (although Eric Smith is a great third safety and role player, and Lowery could be good as a nickel, wasn't awful as a starter), but talentwise, I can't think of anybody whos roster looks better on the back end.

I was hoping the Jets would trade Rhodes away and pick up Antrel Rolle. Rolle is still available as of this posting, but I haven't heard the Jets mentioned as being in the running for him, so if Rhodes were to get moved, I don't know who would replace him. Eric Smith as a starter isn't terrible, but it'd leave us a little thin on the back end. Brodney Poole is available, but has concussion issues. Darren Sharper is out there, but it'd make what I'd call the best young defensive backfield in the NFL a whole lot older. There's the draft, but a draft pick would likely mean Eric Smith is the starter in 2010, unless we trade up for Earl Thomas, which I doubt would happen.

So whats the deal, is public opinion coming back around for Kerry Rhodes at all? Will a solidified second corner make the Jets more willing to part with an established safety, or less willing to throw away a potentially great secondary?

I still want to trade Rhodes for a pick......his attitude and work ethic is in the toilet. Plus, he uses the "Ultimate Warrior flying shoulder block" as his tackling technique......

If the right deal comes along.....i hope Tanny pulls the trigger.

I'm sure they can find a replacement via trade, the draft, or the waiver wire.

You sorta answered your own question....Jets basically got CB Cromartie for free....So why give up Rhodes, he's only gonna get better, unless your gonna get a better FS....Lets keep Rhodes another year.....

Still a prima donna. I'd like to trade him and pick up someone who fits the system like Leonhard does, but a rover who also wants to play football, not model for gays.

I think they'd be willing to part with Rhodes if they get the deal they want and have been for quite some time.

I'd like to see a 3rd rounder and someone drafted to replace him.

Trade Rhodes for a 3rd rounder and then sign Dawan Landry to an offer sheet?

If the jets get rid of rhodes for a 3rd rounder (or boldin) and dont have a FS lined up to get from the free agency I think its a completely stupid move.

That said the Bears just dropped out of the Rolle bidding (supposedly) and OJ atogwe could be available. If the jets can get either of these guys and trade rhodes its great.

If not, then we gotta bump up rhodes value. Either a 2nd, 3rd + 5th, or maybe even Boldin + a 4th or 5th round pick possibly. Losing a guy who is a good safety and getting a late 3rd round pick in return just sucks.

    Thats a good idea.

But what he fuck is wrong with us? We don't remember the team doing well with Eric Smith playing for a benched Rhodes? Jesus we have bad memories.. It just popped into my head that Smith did fine while Rhodes was sitting. I can't believe I forgot that.

Fuck Rhodes, get rid of him and draft BPA.

Why? Then safety would be the only hole in our secondary and we'd have an extra pick to draft one. And how would trading for Boldin make you feel better about our FS situation?

NDMick said to bring back Strickland in the Cromartie thread. I have to stick with this. If he can get past his injury bugs we would have a pretty deep secondary with ESmith being the role player/FS/CB/Nickle, Stickland as a 3rd CB, and Lowery for 4th.

Smith's starts were against Tampa Bay, Buffalo, and Carolina. Not exactly offensive powerhouses. Smith is a great rotational/situational player but he struggles in coverage too often to be a full time starter.

Maybe your memory is a little bad.

He started Vs Carolina, Buffalo, Tampa Bay, and Indy with all their backups in.

So yeah those first 3 teams couldnt throw the ball if their life depended on it. And Indy actually played pretty well in the first half.

Not saying Eric Smith is bad, but no way am I giving someone a starting job based on performances vs a bunch of super scrubs.

I'd say trade Rhodes for some kind of pick, probably 3rd - 4th. While I'm excited for Cromartie I can't help but remember him shying away from Shonn Greene. Do we really want that kinda play added to Rhodes' own brand of "tackling"? That'd mean half our secondary tries to avoid contact.

    Solution: bye bye Rhodes.

Furthermore I agree with NDmick, there wasn't a noticeable drop off with E. Smith in, may as well get some more young guys.

Oh I was addressing the rumors of a boldin/rhodes trade straight up. Not a fan, but if they threw in a mid round draft pick + a wr (therefore dont have to draft a wr) we can go with a safety in the first , pass rusher in the 2nd and then have a mid round pick to address any other needs.

    true. The teams were shitty.

But the D still kicked the living crap out of those teams. And there was no decline in the overall play of the defense from Rhodes to Smith.

Smith is a liability in deep coverage, but with Cro as the #2. Having a top flight safety is less of a priority.

They can get a good safety in round 3 if they trade him.

I also remember Rhodes being a very good player when he was given the flexibility to move around and make plays. For the last two years he's been more limited to playing deep centerfield. Cromartie's presence could result in more flexibility to use him in ways that will make him a happier camper.

Granted it's stupid to have to talk about keeping a player happy, and I'm sure it's frustrating as hell for the coaches, but in any line of work you sometimes get stuck with people you'd rather not have to deal with. Moving Rhodes could end up being a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face (an expression which, on closer inspection, doesn't really seem to make any sense).

Thats a pretty terrible trade for Cards. They will not give up Boldin for Kerry AND a mid round pick. If anything, WE would have to throw in a mid to low round pick for Boldin. A straight up Boldin for Kerry is an excellent trade for us as long as we are able to snatch a good FA.

I've thought this through and we'd be better off with a pick. So you get Boldin and try to trade him for a 2nd or a 3rd plus a conditional for next yr. to recoup Cromartie compensation.
