Rotoworld: So I guess Leon's agent wasn't fired, then. EDIT: BTW, the formatting toolbar doesn't work for some reason.
Is Leon worth keeping if we are offered a 2nd rounder? Maybe, depends on his fitness. Is Leon worth keeping if a team like the Deadskins offer Leon a 5 year $40mil contract? Absolutely not.
So, for a run heavy team we've ditched our workhorse HB and now we are risking losing L. Washington... I'm not sure if I see the logic here.
Workhorse = run down and slow Leon = another 2nd round pick in a talent-heavy draft which could lead to a better workhorse/scat-back who isn't rundown or recovering from a broken tibia and fibula.
The 2nd round talent could bring as much if not more to the actual position of RB than Leon, and our return game didn't diminish that much when he was out. I'd love to have him back, but the move makes sense.
Groan. I'd hate to lose Leon, but I'd love to see the market set Leon's value at not-so-much (and thus knock Keels off his ridiculously high horse)
If we get a 2nd Round pick for Leon, coming off his injury, you take it and run. I really could see a team offering a 2nd round pick for Washington....it only takes one team to be interested. Remember, New England has 3-2nd Round picks...something to think about!!! Jets have the rights to match any offer.....so it would be up to Tanny if he wants to keep Leon. A couple of options: Dexter McCluster Ole' Miss....could be available with our late rd 2 pick or a Rd 3 pick if we trade Rhodes. Michael Smith, Arkansas.....a player that would be available in later rds on Day 3.
Agent Of The Year Alving Keels Says Leon's Return 50-50 Man, I hope I'm in a poker game with this guy Keels....talk about blowing smoke ! First, he turns down a great contract for LW and now he talks like it's really 50-50 that someone is gonna lose compensation to sign LW coming off major surgery. Alvin, you don't bluff when you're holding a pair of 3's !!!! lol http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/jetsblog/leon_agent_says_return_to_jets_is_ftbjSFlCe2LQsViVvDHv5K Leon Washington's agent says his client is "50/50 at best" to return to the Jets after the team placed a second-round tender on the restricted free agent running back-kick returner today. Alvin Keels wrote on his Twitter page Wednesday, "I expect there to be a market for Leon during free agency and would say his return to the Jets will be 50/50 at best at this point." The second-round designation makes Washington a potentially attractive option despite him recovering from a broken right leg that sidelined him for the last nine games of the regular season. "He is ahead of schedule while rehabbing from his week 7 injury," Keels wrote. "He will be 100 (percent) healthy and ready for camp either in (New York) or elsewhere." The Jets declined comment on the move. A team would have to give up a second-round pick if it signs him to an offer sheet that the Jets don't match. Washington made the Pro Bowl as a kick returner after the 2008 season, but was injured at Oakland in Week 7 last year. The Jets previously announced they’ll release running back Thomas Jones when free agency begins Friday.
I love Leon, hope he stays, but if someone comes way over the top like the contract mentioned previously, I would think they will let him walk.
This buffoon thought that there would be MORE MONEY for LW than the $$$ he turned down last year so HTF would he know if there's a market for Leon ????? Why do I have the feeling Alvin Keels is in charge of Obama's healthcare strategy ?? lol
If the Jets can get a 2nd round pick for Leon, you have to take it. I think by giving this tender instead of a 1st rounder, it shows the Jets are not in love with Leon and may have some reservations about giving him a big money, long-term deal. If you get a 2nd rounder for him, you can get a similar player in the middle rounds (Leon himself was a 4th rounder), put him behind our O-line and you can get similar production as what Leon was giving.. plus it will be for way less money and we'll have the player under control for 4-5 years. I love Leon, but this is a good shrewd move by Mr. T.
I think it's a great move because it will show Leon it's real market value. If a team overpays him we get a second in a very deep draft. If some teams are interested but no one offers him the kind of money he asked the jets (5 mill a year) he'll have to understand he ain't worth that kind of money and he'll re-sign long term with us. Either way for us it works and Keels will just have to suck his c***...
You know who else was given a second round tender? Ravens' safety Dawan Landry. I'd much rather trade the extra second round pick for more picks, but using it to acquire a safety that was damn good in Rex Ryan's defense makes a lot of sense to me.
Give Rhodes to the Cardinals for a third and grab Landry with our second... it would make perfect sense. Is Landry ok after the injury he's had? PS now that I think about it... Landry is a SS, not a FS...
