Could we be letting Jones and Feely go to make room for a potential Free Agent?

Im a bit confused about how this whole uncapped year works but could we be cutting ties with these guys to allow us to pick up a big name free agent? ie Peppers/Duante Robinson ect.

i dont think either are worth enough to sign a big time free agent. Im pretty sure you can only sign a free agent of equal or less value of one you let go. Not sure if letting go of say 4 mediocre FA to get 1 big one works tho.

If Feely signs elsewhere we can get a free agent for a comparable salary (1.5 million)

Jones on the other hand we cut so we cant get anything regardless of what he does.

Jones is being cut, so that doesn't help us at all I believe. Feely will allow us to sign someone else, but his contract was pretty small so it won't allow us to sign any big name FAs

Nope. The way the F8P is worded, it's one to one.

My understanding, based on interviews and articles I've read, was always that waived players don't count as replaceable players. However, the language in Section 4 has me doubting that.

While the rules for signing a player explicitly restrict based on the way in which a UFA earns his status, Section 4 seems to indicate that we can replace a player who earns his status in any way, shape, or form. In other words, if Thomas Jones signs immediately with another team, we very well may be eligible to replace him with a UFA at a level equivalent to his new salary. That's huge. It also explains why we'll likely be releasing him on Thursday. He has to be under contract on the final day of the League Year which, I believe, is technically the day before the start of FA.

Again, it seems like there are a lot of confused sports writers out there, but the language of the actual F8P definitely seems in our favor.

So this is a good move then by the Jets. Gives us some head way in Free agency, as long as Jones has some type of value.

What!? No dude, we CUT Jones therefore he doesn't count as a UFA therefore even if he signs for a gazillion dollars for another team it doesn't effect us. Jones doesn't even free up a UFA spot (because he isn't one, in case I haven't made my point)...

Feely on the other hand is a UFA and for whatever sum he signs with another team we can pay a UFA that money (or less) to come play for us.

Again, read the language of the ACTUAL F8P and tell me if you agree. In Section 1, it explicitly states that we can sign UFAs who achieve their status via the waiver system. In other words, when Jones is waived, he is considered a UFA.

In Section 4, it makes NO distinction as to the kind of UFA we can replace under the Section 4 provision for signing a UFA. In other words, it never says we can't sign a UFA to a comparable contract to the one Thomas Jones ends up signing. I've been operating under the exact assumption that you made, given countless interpretations in that manner. However, looking at the text itself, I'm starting to think we very much CAN sign someone to replace TJ.

What you say sounds like it makes a hell of a lot more sense than what's been reported by a lot of media outlets. I posed the question to NFLLabor.com yesterday, still waiting for a response. It's annoying how much misinformation we get from beat writers.

But if that was the case why would final 8 teams like SD release a player (like LT) before the final day of the "previous" season? Because they're idiots? It's an actual question... no saracasm...

PS On the other side why would we wait until the final day before releasing TJ... mmm I'm guessing teams themselves are quite confused on how this final 8 rule works...

I have no idea about the Chargers.

I'm not sure about the details of TJ's contract, which at first had me thinking that not picking up his bonus option (like Lito's as well) would make him a free agent. Not sure if that final year is an add-on that not picking up could cause his contract to expire by natural cause. Now I think he may be a legitimate cut. And I think that's fine for us as well.

Today the Jets released an Official Statement that they would release TJ on Friday. Friday is March 5th. March 5th, according to the NFL's own calendar, is the beginning of the uncapped year... or the first day NFL League Year, as far as I know. Which means, by Section 4 of Article XXI, we can replace him with a player whose contract is equivalent in salary.

    Exactly.
We wouldn't be cutting TJ we just wouldn't be picking up his option which in turn makes him a UFA, i think?

I thought that cutting players didn't make then UFAs, just FAs.. I am not exactly sure, which seems to be the general stance with everyone, but in another thread there was a player who was released and became a FA..

and since he was a FA, and not an UFA, the F4/F8 rules didn't apply.. but im not sure.. I wish there was a better source to explain exactly what everything means.. i don't have time to sit and spend hours trying to decipher what all of this means...

Each team I am sure has an army of junior lawyers in constant touch with the league office and they still don't know shit. All of thee rules are so difficult to interpret that there has to be tons of loopholes available.

You fucker. Now I'm confused again. I think you're right, actually. That's what I get for waking up at 3 in the morning and not going back to sleep.

Here's what the NFL's FA page called them.

    UFA (Unrestricted free agent)
Player in uncapped year with six or more accrued seasons whose contract has expired.
    RFA (Restricted free agent)
Player in uncapped year with at least three accrued seasons whose contract has expired.
    EFA (Exclusive restricted FA)
Player whose contract expires at a time when he has fewer than three accrued seasons.
    Franchise
Free agent who has been designated as a franchise player.
    Transition
Free agent who has been designated as a transition player.
    Released
Vested veteran whose contract has been terminated and can sign with any club.

I think that's enough being wrong 8 times in 1 thread for me. I still think that Shep may end up being a UFA since we didn't pick up his bonus, though.

Read Section 1 again. It specifically mentions UFAs who gain their status by being waived. Calls them UFAs. I'm going to use the language of the F8P to interpret the F8P until proven otherwise.
