LOL I suck at grammar and that was the only thing I noticed in the article...lol. at professional journalism.
He has a lot of strength and surprising speed for his size but he doesn't play like his body type would seem to dictate. He hesitates and tries to dance a lot. The scariest part is that those qualities are very similar to the knocks on Ron Dayne's out of college. His success is going to depend on how coachable he is and how willing he is to change his running style. If the Jets pick him, it will be crucial for him to listen to the RB coaches and learn to drop his shoulder more. That is why I like Gerhart so much. The guy plays like a power back with some speed and elusiveness on top of his size and power. He is a more complete back than Blount right now.
I can actually see that comparison. However, I think Blount has a lot more aggression than Dayne. Blount's performance at the Senior Bowl was huge for me, he's really out to prove he belongs. Like I mentioned in the past, I also like Gerhart. I REALLY want a battering ram in the backfield from time to time.
I really don't want to use a pick on a running back. We already have two really good running backs we drafted in the last few years. However. I wouldn't mind Stafon Johnson if we traded down and acquired more picks. I think he has some upside and I think he will do best in a limited role.
Byron Hout can attest to that! In all seriousness, Blount plays with a lot more violence than Dayne. As I said before, it will be how open to coaching he is that will dictate his success. If he can listen to his coaches then he can succeed in this league. Still, I like Gerhart more. As of right now, he is set to have a better rookie season than Blount. The problem with that is we have one big HB who had a couple of injury problems last season and a small back coming back from a double compound fracture who can still wind up receiving an offer sheet. A lot of the situation is going to depend on how the next couple of weeks play out but I would not be against bringing in a new HB if we 1. lose Washington, 2. acquire another pick from a trade back 3. acquire a pick from trading a player or 4. acquire a pick from Brad Smith. With what we have now, I would agree to stay away from HBs until the 5th round or if an amazing talent happens to fall to us in the first two rounds.
He sure can! Gerhart will probably get more of an opportunity wherever he goes. I'd be psyched for either one.
It depends on how the draft plays out. BPA is a halfback in the first? Probably. BPA is a halfback in the first and the CB/OLB/NT we were targeting is going to be there in the second? Definitely. Both of our current HBs are coming off of injuries so it would be a mistake to assume that we are set at HB. If anything, having a HB fall to us would at least provide an opportunity to trade back and acquire a couple of more draft selections.
I'd love Gerhart if we do lose Leon, but we then still have to seek out that situational scatback. Our usable RBs would all be big between the tackle types, although Greene does have surprising explosiveness. It also bears mentioning that Gerhart, too, had an injury history at Stanford prior to this past season. Still, with our offensive line, he'd do serious damage.
Greene has the ability to play between and outside the tackles. I have not seen a halfback with that ability on this roster since(horrid comparison) Curtis Martin. He's not a future HOF but Greene's ability to run the toss sweep is something this team has lacked since Martin got injured in 2005. I'm still betting on the Jets going into the draft with at least one more pick than we have now. If we keep Leon, I'm guessing a 3rd round pick for an RB to go between the tackles. If we lose Leon, then I think guys like Dexter McCluster come into play. McCluster is even smaller than Leon but he is surprisingly strong and fills every role that Leon played.
I wonder if Chauncey Washington will be given a shot... when they brought him in Rex said "We wanted to bring in the best possible player available out there regardless of the position" I guess that's a pretty good way to come in...
I can't see us losing Leon for a 2nd coming off that injury. Hopefully we go with Washington, Washington and Greene, maybe pick one up in later rounds should the opportunity avail itself. Can't see Jones being that good. It's been stated ad nausem but a lot of his runs were because of great blocking and little else.
His biggest concern coming into the pros was durability. I am not saying that he would not or should not get a chance to prove himself, but right now he is not the best possible choice to help this team. We'll see as the season goes on, though. I'm certainly not rooting against him.
With Greene and Leon on this team I'd actually feel comfortable to see a #3 RB competition in TC between guys like C. Washington, low round rookie, undrafted FA. Our OL is the biggest reason why our running game is elite and someone will shine (hopefully). That said I'm not going to be mad if we bring in a guy like Hardesty or Gerhart... but I want him to be above 210-220... we need someone with power because Greene is powerful but also very shifty and it would be a shame to just use him to wear down Ds...
The only problem with letting C. Washington compete is that you have three backs with injury questions in a backfield that just lost Thomas Jones due to depleted production and injury concerns. That being said, I have been tooting the Gerhart horn for a while and he has had injury problems in the past so take it for what it is worth.
