With the love that Feeley has in NY, Folk had not better make any mistakes early on , or that precious confidence will be on the next plane out of JFK. Unless this is the reason...... (Asomugha??)
I'm sure this move was made for contract purposes with the Feely negotiation. Feely prob asked for a raise or more guaranteed money or a long term deal and the Jets don't want to do that... so they let him hit the FA market. If things go well we re-sign Feely at our conditions, if things don't go well we keep Folk who has potential (even though I don't like him on this team).
Care to explain that one without throwing out the phrase "leader" in a meaningless sense? I know the guy filled in for Weatherford once but come on, the guy kicked field goals and kick offs, and ran down the field in attempts to make tackles which put the KO team in horrible fucking positions.
I thought about him, but they've kicked FGs pretty similarly the last 3 seasons (2008 was a great year for Gost though): Feely: 2007: 23 21 91.3% 2008: 28 24 85.7% 2009: 36 30 83.3% Gost: 2007: 24 21 87.5% 2008: 40 36 90.0% 2009: 31 26 83.9% Plus I just like Feely better as an overall special teams player. I just can't picture Stephen running downfield to lay the wood. Yes he's older, but age isn't as important at K as it is for other positions.
I read thru all 6 pages and I had to wait until the 6th page to read the real reason... If Feely walks then that means we can sign a player...Yes, Folk had a bad year but he showed he can be a beast. I for one am all for this - get a 25yr old Former Pro-Bowl Kicker and sign a big-time FA?? Sign me up....Later Jay
And thats the point Im making. He's either asking a contract in the range you just mentioned, or the Jets don't have much confidence in him. I think its the former, in which case it makes sense to let him go. We are not going to pay him $2+ mil a yr. Maybe he is trying to inflate his value due to the uncapped year. Either way, he is not getting multi millions a yr. Maybe $1.5 at the most.
fuck, fuck , fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, etc (I know Folk has some talent but he was awful last year and i really liked Feely)
Ah, I didn't consider this. If we can really get a solid FA as a result of letting Jay go then I'm square.
Every time Feely did that, he left the Jets without a safety to cover a deep run back. Feely was directly responsible for Ted Ginn Jr.'s two runbacks in the second Miami game. It's nice to see a guy with that much heart but that was just fucking stupid. Those are mental mistakes the Jets do not need.
Don't worry about that. We'll see threads about it all season long regardless of what happens in the off season.
So the 2 other Jets that grabbed air had nothing to do with that? If your relying on your Kicker to make the tackle on PR/KR, then you F'd anyway.
It doesn't work that way. Letting Feely walk will let us sign another FA, but not a "big-time" player. "the Player Contract for the New Player shall have a first year Salary of no more than the first year Salary of the Player Contract signed by the Previous Player with the New Club" Essentially, we'd wait for someone to sign Feely, then we could sign a UFA to a contract that pays the same or less in the first year (w/ no more than a 30% annual increase). Feely won't open many doors for us.
Only if you assume that only one person can be at fault. The point is we needed someone back there to at least try and push Ginn out of bounds when he hit the sidelines, we didn't have that. That role is on every kick off team from high school to the NFL and Feely completely abandoned it. You are not supposed to rely on the kicker to make that tackle but you that does not mean that the role is completely irrelevant. It's the same thing as a lane man going for the ball and breaking contain. I'm not saying that Feely is the only reason that those returns happened but I'm sick of seeing praise for a guy who fucked up his assignment because his head got too big for his role. Feely is there to make sure the worst doesn't happen. He tried to tackle the guy to minimize the return, the guy broke free and the designed safety valve was missing. That screwed over the Jets. Again, I like Feely as a kicker, I admire him for taking over for Weatherford in the Bengals game, and I thought it was awesome when he made that first tackle on KO. But he kept doing it even after it cost the Jets the first time. It is not something he should be praised for equivocally.
How about touchbacks? Gostkowski had 21 last year. I can't find Feely's numbers for that, but I'd bet it's much lower.
Agreed, but those 2 run backs were not entirely Feeleys fault. I'm desperately trying to remember who whiffed on the first one, Westerman was it ?? Then on the second I think it was Wright or Smith?? Anyways, I still stand by that having your kicker make tackles is not a good way to go.
1. The first one was Woodhead. 2. So there is no reason for Feely to run down the field in the first place.
dumb ass post ... do you really think that hes just flying down there with no coaching instructions? if westhoff wanted him to play back and wait for the homerun return, he would be doing just that
