I'd be all for cutting Gholston now so we don't take a cap hit. He's a bust, and we need to forget about that POS.
if this is the case, i would rather keep him for another year ... or at least until the last cuts of training camp
that's only the case during the uncapped year and if he gets cut right now. Whatever the new CBA is will dictate what he is worth in the later years. I say cut him now, save the cash and use it to find another OLB who can actually see the field for 15% of the defensive snaps per game.
Releasing TJ will have no affect in future years' cap. Releasing would simply be due to the money factor this yr. It would be a mistake to do so. He needs to stay this yr since there is no cap. He's due to make $5.8 mil this yr (signing bonus was paid anyways which rises his cap charge to about 7.4 mil). $5.8 is not a huge number for a starting back coming off a career yr. As for Rhodes, if we can get a second day pick, I would do it.
Capped year or uncapped year, I doubt any team would give anything up in trade for a player as unproductive as Gholston with the contract that he has. Teams aren't interested in just throwing money out the window.
The problem is that no team is going to be willing to pay Gholston's huge salary. The only way a trade would be possible is if Gholston is willing to renegotiate his contract, which I doubt since he probably doesn't give a shit about whether his NFL career is successful or not. If we don't cut the Ghost I'd suggest that we let him eat, roid and bodybuild himself to 290 lb and try him as 3-4 DE. It's painfully obvious that he cannot play 3-4 OLB.
He has no trade value. Reason being would be his huge contract. I wouldn't trade a 7th rounder for someone who will be making over $10 mil in base salaries alone in the next 3 years and doesn't start. EDIT: Apparently, we advanced Ghosts base salaries from future years to 2009 so we absorbed a lot of the hit in 2009 anyways, according to nyjetscap.com http://www.nyjetscap.com/vernongholston.html
As far as renegotiating his contract, he won't have much of a choice. Play for what we pay you or go be a struggling body builder. We managed to get DRob off our books when we sent him to Denver. Granted we didn't get shit for him beacuse of his playing time clause, I'd rather try a similar deal for gholston then just to cut him outright. Either way I don't wanna see this bust play another snap for the Jets.
Couldn't we keep Gholston and see what he gives us this season. If he continues to not produce, I believe he can be cut anytime in 2010 (even after the start of the season) and still have his salary count mostly against this uncapped year.
is there another player out there with a high salary that is underproductive we could swap trash for trash???
Interesting thought Mr. E Am I right...if the Jets cut Ghoston, they owe him his guarantee, if he cleares waviers, and the Jets resign him, they can negotiate a brand new, lower $$, contract, essentially saving money in the long term?
WRONG!.. if we let him go .. its not going to happen until the END of the season.. whether we release him March 5th or at the end of this season.. there will be no difference, the same cap hit will occur.. so are we going to release ghost.. probably (unless he decides to start playing football).. but are we releasing him now?.. no..
Bingo. The cap hit doesn't disappear. The prorated portion just moves to next year. If we release him, we must be banking on the cap being gone for good or on some kind of accomodation being made when it's reinstated.
