Are we going OLB round 1 again ???
Certainly looks like DE/OLB will get first choice

Hmm, thought he was good depth.

Sounds like uninformed opinion to me. I think Gholston stays.

I had Gladys Gholston pegged as a future NFL turd this time two years ago, but even I thought he would have at least stumbled his way to even one measly coverage sack by now.
It is simply amazing that a guy drafted to sack quarterbacks has zero sacks after two seasons.
I know Carl Barzilauskas, Mike Haight, and Blair Thomas, among others, were considered big Jets busts, but Gholston will be #1 on that list for me if he has another turd year in 2010.

Remember, until he gets a sack his name is Gladys Gholston.

it would be the best scenario for us to get rid of gholston.

On douglas, I would hate to see him go. He can clearly still play and he certainly would be a great rotational guy, maybe not a starter anymore but certainly could be solid depth

To be fair, he's not been sent out to rush the passer all that often, from what I have seen.

We gotta get rid of the ghost. But what is the benefit of letting Douglas go?

When they say hit the open market does that mean FA or just cut him. Maybe if we can pick up a younger guy In free agency that could be a plus.

If he's let go, I doubt anyone else signs him. He'll probably end up back with the Jets...after the team makes a few more important signings.

Tanny mentioned in his jets.com interview that we really can't up our stud's contracts (revis, mangold, etc) due to a 30% limitation on pay raises in an uncapped year.

so, since we can't really focus on locking up our studs long term, and we can't really focus on UFAs (final 4 rule), Tanny is probably focusing HARD on cutting dead wood and taking the cap hit this year when it really doesn't matter.

other than Gholston, what other players do we have that aren't earning their jack and should be whacked now to help our future cap situation? Rhodes?

I thought the Gholston thing would have been obvious after the season ended. He's worthless on a professional football field without being able to stick a needle in his ass.

What the Douglas comment means to me is that the Jets think that Mike Devito is ready to step in at RDE at least until the Jets can find a true starter at that side, but possibly even that they think he is able to be an effective stater at the position. I saw a lot out of him early and he didn't disappoint me at all with the versatility he showed after Jenks went out with the ACL.

My guess right now as far as top needs early in the draft are still: OLB/CB/NT

Kerry Rhodes and Thomas Jones. The difference between the two is Rhodes has trade value.

Yeagh, I pretty much agree with that. Douglas isn't going to be getting any big offers so we'll probably be able to get him back cheaper (though the difference is probably negligible).

Personally, I would never recommend trading for a 32 year old back but I feel like someone in the league might bite for a late rounder. Though for that compensation, I don't think it would really be worth it. Some people might say Jones' leadership value isn't enough but I disagree.

Let Gholston go asap! He can't even get on the field on a pass rushing specialist! Get rid of this dead weight while we can!

i thought i read somewhere that there are uncapped year rules for cutting players that doesnt give you a free pass to cut the dead weight ... anyone else know about this?

Someone posted a link to some unknown blogger writing about that, but I haven't seen it anywhere else.

not all of the dead money disappears.

I think the jets would owe Gholston around 5mil in 2011 if they cut him right now.

I imagine if they thought he could rush the passer they would have sent him out there. Don't you?

Being that this is an uncapped year, a lot of teams can take a shot at gholston. Maybe a team like the panthers would be able to use gholston, being they're gonna lose Peppers this offseason. He played 4-3 DE at Ohio state, we should trade him for a bag of doritos, just so long as we can get something for him as opposed to releasing him and getting Jack shit in return for a 25 year old physical freak of nature.
