True enough. Though in 2004 they did get Wilfork and Cassel, that's got to be worth something. 2006, however, was God-awful! I know hindsight is 20-20, but they passed up on Deangelo Williams and drafted Maroney instead while also taking Chad freaking Jackson instead of Greg Jennings. Maroney has shown himself to be above-average, in terms of production, at best. When you factor in injuries, he sucks. Last year the jury is still out on, but I think it was a pretty good one. As far as the Jets go, they are still at the point where they could go up or down. Sanchez still has a bit to show, IMO, and they have some old players in key positions as well.
I think Scott Pioli was the brains on draft day for the Patriots - When he went to the Chiefs, they haven't had any great draft picks...
Well 2004 is par for the Pats course, they hit 1 pick or 2 at most. Like Abyzmyl said earlier, BB's strength is bringing in vets to add depth. They have had some really shallow drafts. The Jets are trading up too much lately. In every instance it seems they have hit. (not factoring 2009 yet) but still you can not trade up constantly. Although it helps to hit every trade up. In the first 2 rounds the Jets have hit on pretty much every pick they have made since 06', with the notable exception of Gholston. Whether you think the Jets made that pick with a gun to their head or not. The Jets problem is that from 2001-2005 the Jets were uber crappy drafting. Those years should have had at least 5-8 core players for this team..........
The pats always have way more picks than we. We always have to make our picks count considering we always have so little to pick every year. The pats will retool in abundance. I can not agee with us overtaking the pats. The pats draft, hit or miss depends on how many picks they always seem to have. Some they miss on. Most of the time they hit on system players. We loose this draft battle every year. Sure we get 1 or 2 good players who are starters some time but the pats always draft for depth and wind up getting 4 to 5 starters with this approach. Sorry to say in the shear numbers game, and the way they draft,they always seem to get the better of the division. The pats plain and simple play the numbers game with people who know how to draft. I do not like this one bit. Not saying we can't win but we never beat them in the draft game.
Where the NYJ stand completely depends on Sanchez' progression. If he can offer us a more balanced offense next year, we will contend. The OL/DL are getting older and have little depth, injuries will happen, we will have to depend more on the passing attack next year. I think the Patriots will always be a contender with Brady. They aren't as strong as in year's past, no doubt, but they will be around.
yeah, their drafts have been nothing of late(rolls eyes), Defensive rookie of the year 08 J. Mayo , 09 draft Vollmer, D. Butler (who will be a solid corner) Chung(too early to tell as he didn't play much except ST in his rookie season), Edelman(mini-welker in the 7th rnd). Patriots go for value and depth, cause chances are.. alot of players will be hurt. So they build a ROSTER with guys that can fill in and although not do as great as the guy lost, it's still not a complete drop off. That's how they keep winning. Pioli was a big part of whiffing on picks from 04 till 08
Oh yeah their 2008 draft was absolutely stellar (double rolls eyes). LMAO got one player, if I was a Pats fan I would get drunk and run down the street naked. 2009 is too early to tell but looks much better.............
I did my research... the jury is still out on the 2009 class... 2008 class: Mayo (excellent), Wheatley (depth at CB), Crable (depth at LB, two years on IR), O'Connell (with the Jets), Wilhite (depth at CB), Slater (ST guy), Ruud (FA). Basically they got 1 starter and 2 or 3 career backups... wow. 2007 class: Meriweather (solid pick). Every other player from this class isn't a Patriot anymore... they all were released somewhere down the line. Wow, one starter and that's it... not bad . 2006 class: Maroney (rotational starter), Gostkowski (solid K), No other player drafted in 2006 is on the team anymore. So, not counting the 2009 class which I admit seems to be better in the 3 years prior to that the Patriots managed to draft 2 starters (Mayo, Meriweather), 1 rotational starter (Maroney), their K (Gostkowski), two backup CBs (Wheatley,Wilhite) and maybe a backup LB (Crable, 2 years on IR)... now isn't that amazing .
Honestly, the Jets are NOT that far off as some in the media may think... Actually, with a little help in the passing game (WR) and the back four of the defense (FS), they are probably going to be my super bowl favorite next year coming out of the AFC

Actually the media is starting to really overhype us. I think if we have a good draft, we are going to be everybody's trendy sb pick next year. And that really scares me!
That is true... The overhyping of any team can have a negative effect on performance...as some would actually start to believe their own hype!
If the Pats continue to draft mediocre at best and the Jets continue bringing in small but potent draft classes I think the Jets consistently beat the Patriots for the next 5 years. I LOVE Tannenbaum's eye for talent, but his philosophy of constantly trading up is hurting the team down the stretch by robbing them of depth. If he can learn the art of still getting quality players while keeping your picks, this Jets team will be downright dominant for years to come.
He has traded up when he needed to (Sanchez, Shonne Green) but has done remarkably well when not trading and taking BAP (Leon Washington). I think that's the real art of what he does. He seems to think outside the conventional box and goes either way. He's a heat-seeking missile when it comes to talent.
Well, it's a good thing the Patriots plan is to just keep their rister the same next year. Apparently they'll be giving away all their draft picks and not sign any free agents.It's reassuring that they'll be keeping the same WRs, RB's etc.so that the offense is stagnant and the defense unimproved.
I, for one, like the trading up mindset. Under Tanny he's proven beyond a reasonable doubt, that when he moves up he gets a good, to great, player. I know, Sanchez is not a great player yet, but I think his maturation during the playoffs was huge. Revis, Greene, Sanchez and Keller are guys that he's targeted and have all proven worthy. It's ironic that the one time he should've traded down and not stood pat, he took Vernon. Holy shit, could you imagine if Tanny had traded up for VG?
