ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills starting right tackle Brad Butler announced his retirement Thursday.

The news comes as a surprise to the Bills after Butler, who's 26, just completed his fourth NFL season.

Butler majored in government studies at Virginia, and he spent the 2008 offseason interning at Kemp Partners in Washington D.C. with late Bills quarterback and U.S. congressman Jack Kemp.

"My passion for education, country and community is something that I am ready to devote my full attention to," Butler said in a statement released by the team. "I believe the best way to pursue these spheres of interest is to step away from the game of football at this point in my life."

Butler started all but two of the 33 career games he played in after being drafted in the fifth round of the 2006 draft. He was limited to just two games in 2009 after sustaining a serious knee injury in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

that just sucks if you are a bills fan. One of the very few young guys on the line with potential, and he calls it quits at 26....

But if he would rather be a politician than a NFL player, good for him. good luck i suppose

Wow when it rains it pours for them. Looks like it will get worse before it gets better.

This is probably going to get the Bills the Super Bowl in 2 years, complete with an AFCC victory of the Jets.

Wow, from a football perspective that's hilarious.

Sometimes I feel a little bad for Buffalo. And then I remember that they gave a 1st rounder to the Pats for Bledsoe and allowed New England to trade up for Ty Warren, and I stop feeling bad for them.

Why do I get the feeling that the madness doesn't stop here? I'm expecting a Lynch story in about a week or two.

At least they are starting with a clean slate. Also, the OL was without Butler for most of 2009, so while it sucks not to have him, the bench got some needed reps in a crap year. It would be nice to have him, but best of luck to Brad. Maybe if they keep Incognito, pick up Bulger as a stop gap, and draft two solid OL, there might be hope. Man do I hate February......

    I wish him luck though.
Not many people turn down millions to pursue their true desire.

But hey, we'll still split w/the BILLS for the next 10 years....

He's a natural fit for a political career when one takes into account his dirty play on Mathias Kiwanuka in a college game.

Look on the bright-side... after this year with prob a rookie salary cap you will be in a much better position to build through the draft!

I think you are 2-3 years away from getting to a .500 record... and that's if you draft well.

    Good luck...

This is true. You could dress a D-II team in the Bills uniforms and we'd find a way to split with with them

For a second i thought he was gonna go into the boxer rebellion and spheres of influence...woops...spheres of interest? Why would you use a term like that? Talk about some political verbage bs.

But seriously, he's gonna regret this decision if he can't tell the difference between spheres of influence and spheres of interest.

I was going to bring this up yesterday, but I would argue that they are pretty similar. He SAYS he is doing it to be of service to his country, but he wants to become a politician, so of course he is going to say that.

The fact is that they both left football in the middle of a commitment to pursue other interests.

Butler is a POS. I wish the worst for him in the future.
