I'd be happy if we got him back as a 3rd WR. We wouldn't be investing big dollars into him so it would be a low risk move.
I've always been a Coles fan and at first thought would welcome him back. After thinking about it how many times can he come and go? He's proved that he will never be a bargain salary wise, not even next year. He won't allow it. More power to him, but that ship has sailed. This year proved that Tanny did the right thing allowing him out. The Bengals overspent in stead of us.
Easy Answer.....sign or draft someone who isn't in the twilight of their career and who hasn't suffered their fair share of concussions.
He ranked #38 in footballoutsiders.com's wide receiver rankings. That makes him a middling to high 2, just like his 2008 and 2007 performances. A lot of people focus on the rants off the field and the personality issues and miss the fact that Coles never causes problems on the field and generally does a really good job for his team. He's going to be 33 years old this year and probably has a couple of more well-performing seasons in him before he begins to shut down. I'd like to see them on the Jets because I think he'd be a great #3.
The list of people we can sign without giving up players or draft picks is incredibly small. And we only have 2 draft picks in the first 4 rounds, before our 5th pick which is the last of the round. Getting Coles cost us nothing but salary, the alternatives require us giving up equal value in return.
I can't find anything about Coles having a concussion since '08. Anyone have a link to show otherwise?
Well in the Jets/Bengals playoff game he was knocked out of the game with "concussion symptoms" Not sure how they ruled it after the game, since most of us were far too focused on San Diego
Then I would take Holt or Burress or look to Draft. There's been a number of good slot WR's in the Draft proposed by some of our College Draft junkies here on this Board that could be acquired in the later rounds. Also, if our scouts do their homework, I'm sure we can look to find a Welker/Camarillo/Edelman(7th rounder)-type of player late in the Draft. Some of them even go Undrafted. I don't know why ppl are in such a rush to bring in someone with a long concussion history to a position that--though he won't get many touches--will require you to take some of the biggest hits on the field.
Sign who? Who can the Jets sign that could be as effective as Coles? Draft who? What round? I'd rather we use our higher picks in the trenches, particularly on the d-line, than on a 3rd receiver who won't be a huge impact.
Did we just suddenly forget why this board wanted him gone last season, aside from his contract? He has major concussion problems which have clearly affected his hands. Why are we looking for old castoffs to build this team? Coles is patchwork we don't need.
Coles didn't have a concussion last season...but that's only one season removed.....and how many has he had in his career? 3 maybe 4? i dunno....i liked him on the outside when he played here....and he has the tools/skillset to play in the slot...I just don't think his body will handle it for a whole season....just my opinion. If the Jets sign him....i'll trust the decision ...because the FO is obviously more privvy to his health than we are....
I personally never wanted him gone. What's so bad about patchwork in a position that has a relatively small impact in this offense? We're a run first team with solid passing options in Edwards, Cotchery and Keller. There's only one ball.
Do you think Coles is any better than say...Torry Holt? I'm not saying we should sign Holt....but Holt's injury history isn't as decorated as Coles'. He has great hands, not sure if the breakaway speed is still there....but I think Holt could probably play the slot just as well as Coles....given the circumstances. I definitely DO NOT want to spend any high draft picks on WRs.....Dline, Oline, and the Secondary are higher priorities, IMO.
Holt is pretty much the only other WR option that would be an upgrade for us without sacrificing picks right now IMO. I like Holt a lot, but at this point in there respective careers and with Coles' familiarity in this offense I think Coles is the better option. He clearly outperformed Holt last season, both of them being in new systems. That said, I'd be happy with either.
I'm not into LC coming back. I was definitely a Coles supporter in the past but I think he is 1 injury away from becoming a vegetable. Would rather not use a roster spot or $$ on him at this point.
I guess there are positives for both....Coles' familiarity with the system, like you said....and Holt's familiarity with Henry Ellard. I still think the injury history is the lynch pin....
I always liked Coles and never paid much attention to his off-field comments because they don't matter. I'm not against bringing him back, I just think the concussion issue is a concern, same as when he left last season. He was obviously productive this past season, I just said I was surprised by that. I'm not sure how much he has left, but given the options it wouldn't be the worst move we could make.
Hmmmm..... How many did Chrebet have before he hung it up? 6? 9? How come we didn't run him out of town in 2004 or 05 when he was at the 3 or 4 mark? Coles has always gotten tough yardage even when Chad's arm was putting the ball in bad spots. If he want to come back and play the #3 WR, I say bring him back. offtopic rant: I can remember fans sitting behind me on MANY games trashin Chad saying - "that's it Chad, throw it so you get your receivers killed" But Coles and Chrebet hauled them in. Way to root for your team...assholes.
That was always a silly criticism of Chad. He was very accurate, rarely put his WRs in bad spots compared to most QBs. Ken O'Brien was accurate and had a rocket arm and still Al Toon had to retire young because of concussions. If you go over the middle in the NFL it can happen no matter who is throwing you the ball. That was just ignorant haters blaming more shit on Chad.
