I know theres been a lot of people talking about us grabbing an old veteran receiver to round out the bunch (ie Holt).

But today on ESPN they were saying theres a very decent chance Coles gets cut from the Bengals this year. (they said there is about a 50 50 percent chance of it happening)

Assuming hes cut we could pick em back up no draft picks or anything.

Think he would be the guy we need ? I mean this guy has always shown nothing but heart and effort for us in the past, and was incredibly reliable.

More importantly do you think hed even want to return to NY?

Update: Coles got cut by the Bengals today

I'd love to have him back as our #3 receiver.

He left NY because he thought he was worth more money. If the Bengals cut him it will be because they don't think he's worth the money they're paying him. At some point he has to swallow his pride and realize he's not worth that much anymore and is on the downside of his career.

He knows this offense and would definitely be an upgrade at #3. I think it would be a great pickup if they do release him.

He's a concussion away from giving us a slot receiver problem all over again in 2010. Wouldn't surprise me if we brought him in to see if we could find a spot for him on the team, but his health is what worries me.

    What are the alternatives?

It's not like they'd be asking him to catch 90 balls in the slot.

Well they were saying part of why he might get cut is he had a very underwhelming seasons last year (to be fair the Bengals passing game has kind of sucked every since Palmers injury) and they mentioned Coles having a concussion in the playoffs and his age being a factor.

I mean if the Bengals are willing to cut Coles for Matt Jones (who just got out of what heroine or cocaine rehab or something ?), im really unsure if Coles is gonna find big bucks.

Look at teams like Chicago or Baltimore... they have two very good QBs and almost no serviceable WR (especially Baltimore). I can see them overpaying a veteran...

I don't recall ever reading about that?

From my understanding he was arrested in 07 or 08 for possession of cocaine and then violated his probation in '09 by drinking alcohol in public (on a golf course).

Well no, but he'd be going across the middle a good amount of the time. I don't know what other (better) alternatives there are right now, so I wouldn't be surprised if we brought him in or Holt and try to see how they work out in the slot, but Coles' concussion history makes me wanna stay away from him.

I agree. Coles as the number 3 WR would be a good move.

    hyperboles ftw!

I wouldn't mind bringing Coles in, once he lost a good amount of speed I always thought he'd be the perfect slot receiver

I agree that concussions are a big concern. I actually didn't know that he had a concussion in the PO game - news to me. He had 6 receptions and a TD.

I'd like to see him finish his career as a Jet. I think he could help us in the slot.

I have to disagree here....Slot Receivers typically take a lot of hits...especially coming across the middle. Coles will crack like an egg.

I liked Coles when he played for the Jets....he was always productive. But I don't believe there's a fit here on this team....too much wear n' tear.

Laveranues Coles, unhappy with the money he's receiving from the Jets, goes to another team for a brief period, realizes he had it pretty good in New York, swallows his pride and comes back.

    Sounds familiar.

He was basically the #3 guy on the Bengals last season and put up numbers we'd love to have from our slot guy. He was still very productive in week 17 and the PO game. It's not like he broke down over the course of the season. Sure his numbers were down overall last year, but he was in a new system and we would love that production out of our #3.

I get the injury concerns but again, what are the alternatives? We aren't going to rely heavily on our #3 receiver unless we have an injury to our #1 or #2.

That's actually the only reason why I'd like to see him back, but, given how the league is promising to crack down on concussions, they're going to keep a close eye on him and any other players that have a long history of them. If he gets shaken up on any specific play, he could very well be pulled for the rest of the game and possibly the next 2-3 weeks, depending on results, making him a constant liability. In the meantime, we'll still have a void in the slot.

I'd take Coles as #3 in a heartbeat, assuming he was willing to play that role. The only problem I forsee in adding him is the locker room chemistry between him and Braylon Edwards. Coles is a better receiver than Edwards but can't stretch the field like he can and can't make the leaping one handed grabs up high. That's a contrast that would be on display all season long - the surehanded route runner versus the inconsistent freak of nature. I have a feeling it could get testy at times.

The only real alternatives is Holt and possibly Plaxico Burress. Not a lot of guys we can grab that dont require players or draft picks (which we dont seem to have many of)

I'm surprised Coles lasted this past season considering how close to done he appeared to be the year before with us. Hey, if we bring Chad in as the backup QB and Coles as the slot WR, maybe we can hire Herm to manage the clock for us--back to the future.
