I've heard the new Arsis, they toned down the technicality and rock out a little more. It's also kind of cheesy. I found it enjoyable, but I need to give it a few more listens.

I'm kinda glad to hear they toned down the technicality. It was a little too much on the last album. I'm not really holding my breath for A Celebration of Guilt Part II but it would be nice to see them get back to that sound a little bit.

I've heard just 2 songs so far,In vain and The head and the heart. They were decent, but nothing special. Before this album,i haven't listened to them since WFO,lol. I loved them back in the day with Taking Over and Under the Influence. Isn't Peter Tagtgren the one man metal band guy with "Pain"?

Overkill was definitely the shit back in the day.

Peter Tagtgren is indeed the guy from Pain but he is probably better known as the front man for Hypocrisy. He's a damn good producer too as he has his own recording studio, Abyss Studios, in Sweden. He's produced a lot of Immortal, Dark Funeral, and Children of Bodom among many others.

Nice thread. Don't know what constitutes as Death Metal these days. A lot of newer stuff seems like hybrid music (to many genres now a days). Only band I know of that's worth listening to that i consider new (which they aren't) is "Nile". I'm old, starting listening to Metal in the early 80's (Maiden/Priest) though.

top 5
5. Morbid Angel - Alters of Madness
4. Deicide - Deicide
3. Bolt Thrower - the IVth Crusade
2. Obituary - Cause of Death
1. Ripping Corpse - Dreaming With The Dead (best Death EVER! from NJ) - find the demos and the unreleased album.

Honorable mentions:
Human Remains - Where Were You When (Discog - NJ)
Sepultura - Arise
Mercyful Fate - Melissa
Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
Slayer - Reign In Blood

There's a name I haven't heard in a while. I saw them play back in the day. They had just changed their name to Dim Mak but they played mostly Ripping Corpse stuff.

Also nice to see Bolt Thrower get some love.

7. Great list and Ripping corpse is definitently underrated. I do think that it's cruel to leave off classic bands like Cannibal corpse, Incantation and Malevolent creation from this list, however.

10. Ascending, almost choral, passage at approx. 2:38 is uplifting and beautiful.

Saw Alice in Chains last night. They were awesome. Place was packed...too packed. We got there late, stood in line and got a shitty spot. Also, opening was Middle Class Rut. Enjoyed them and bought their new ep.

Looks like I might be seeing Megadeth in March with Testament and Exodus, then seeing Slayer in August with Megadeth and Testament. A little repetitive, but it should still be fun.

Big Electric Wizard fan - Dopethrone is one of the best, if not the best, doom metal albums of all time.

I know you've only seen me in the hip-hop thread, but this is always my first love. I'm in this mess somewhere:

I'm actually in the last 30 seconds or so of this video, same show. I'm the tall dude with the Judge shirt on:
Same show:
Believe it or not, when I lived in Albany (circa '95):
One of the best shows I've ever been at: . This one too, .
Saw this band back in 1995. The most underrated band ever:
This is just the beginning. I'm drunk and happy for the 1st time in 4 days, and this is the music, even though I have a lot in the hip-hop thread, that makes me love music.
